Concern for Ukrainian family

Hi. Does anyone know if there are any official channels that I can make a concern about a Ukrainian family being housed? It’s a private agreement but the person who is taking the mother and daughter in is a known alcoholic with anger issues.

Private arrangement he was trying to get, outside the scheme. Said he’d pay

How have they managed to have a private arrangement? If they have come on visas the host will have had DBS checks and home checks. Other than that hosts won't be checked and have references. As they say if they haven't experienced any violence then what is the complaint? It sounds as though you may have legitimate concerns based on perhaps how you may have been treated than a current reality though.

Are you always a twat?

This is just like I’m seeing on FB. There is a national initiative by Everyone Active to provide a year’s free leisure membership for Ukrainian families. Some of the outraged comments on the local FB page are disgusting and verging on racist. Such a lack of human decency….it’s shocking.

It depends what exactly the concern is. The housing department of your local council is responsible for housing law - for example ensuring acceptable standards of accommodation and landlord responsibilities towards tenants. Sometimes they have landlord registration or licensing schemes or they may have local knowledge of particular landlords from past experience of enforcement or complaints. So that's your starting point of where to address your enquiry.

As the tenant or lodger is also a Ukrainian refugee, you can find out whether resettlement schemes for Ukraine are run within the housing department or separately within the council and about any form of voluntary refugee assistance by charities locally and so on.

I spoke to the safeguarding adult team who then put me through to a social worker who told me to speak to the police…. I’ll phone back tomorrow to see if I can speak to the homes for ukraine people thanks everyone.

I do hope you manage to find some help.

I'm sure these poor people have been through enough already!

How do you know this?

Is it someone you’re in contact with so you can keep an eye on things to be able to ring the police if necessary?

I thought they had to be thoroughly checked.
It’s worrying this has gone under the radar as I’m sure there are some predatory people out there using this to their advantage.

Obviously not all alcohols are violent or bad people but I would speak to the Ukrainian family and give them your phone number and the number of the UK police so if anything does happen they can contact someone.

Checked, yes, but not thoroughly. DBS and a housing check. I would like to think if the housing check team had any concerns that weren’t formally in their area they would flag them up for extra welfare checks after arrival but I am not sure they would be able to find an official reason to reject the visa.
