Scammed for ipad screen replacement!

Nobeautysleep · 30/04/2022 20:34

Took my ipad to a phone shop to get the screen replaced. The guy told me it was an iPad Air gen 5 and that it’d cost £150 to fix it. I was so preoccupied with the kids that I just said yes. He put a sticker on it saying its a gen 5.
paid and collected it today, but when ive checked its actually a 2014 1st generation ipad thats basically not worth the of the repair.

AIBU to go back to the shop tomorrow to ask for a refund on the basis that he has sold me something that I don’t actually have (ie a gen 5 screen when its a gen 1 ipad)?

Does anyone know if I could do a section 75 claim based on it being a misrepresented as I paid on card.

Feeling very stupid right now.

I think it's on you to know what device you are using for repair, sorry

skilpadde · 30/04/2022 20:44

So you took your ipad in, he quoted you £150, you said yes, he replaced the screen, you've gone back and paid the £150 and collected your own ipad, now with replaced screen?

So long as you got back your ipad, and he's not swapped it out for an older model, I'm not sure how you can claim it's a scam. You knew what model your ipad was before you took it for repair, yes? You agreed to the quote. It was on you to decide that it wasn't worth the quoted cost of repair.

Trying to make a claim now would make you look like the scammer, I'm afraid.

IncessantNameChanger · 30/04/2022 20:47

How did you not know how old it was? Did you not look into the cost of replacing it on eg CEX? I have a 2014 iPad mini and I know how much they are on cex. It’s a basic check when deciding to repair or replace.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 30/04/2022 20:49

I have an air 1st generation and was quoted the same. It's because it's an air apparently

HTH1 · 30/04/2022 20:54

Agree with PPs, he did the job you requested properly at the price you agreed between you. You can’t then decide it wasn’t worth doing after all and not pay, any more than you can arrange for any other service then decide not to pay for it.

ChateauMargaux · 30/04/2022 20:55

How much would a screen replacement cost on a Gen 1 ipad.. our Gen 1's don't really work anymore.. can't be uograded won't load many apps...

What do you use it for... does it still work? Yes.. its probably worth less than the repair cost but a new one would cost you more...

Well done you for repairing rather than adding to the increasingly problematic problem of tech waste which is highly toxic.

PurpleDinosaurpark · 30/04/2022 20:55

So he told you what model he thought it was & you confirmed he was correct?. That's on you to known what device you have. A quick Google will give you an accurate idea of the cost. Not what I'd consider a scam. If he'd have quoted you £150 & when you came back asked you for £500 then that would be a scam

Nobeautysleep · 30/04/2022 20:57

I didn’t know what model it was. He told me it was a gen 5. He lied to me.

You won’t get your money back but good luck trying!

Discovereads · 30/04/2022 21:09

Sorry OP but this is entirely on you to make a repair or replace judgement. It’s not his fault you didn’t do any research or even look up what iPad Air you had.

Screen repairs are the same no matter what Gen the iPad Air is anyway, so it’s not like it would have been any cheaper if you’d corrected him and let him know it was a Gen 1 iPad Air.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 30/04/2022 21:09

But you can check yourself in settings exactly what model you have??? As OP said that's the first thing you du when deciding whether to repair ott replace . . .

Just for fun if he'd have told you it was a first gen Air would you then have stopped him and said not to bother? You obviously thought it was worth repairing hence agreeing to the £150 , I am struggling to see why the fact you found out the model after means you want a refund. You just sound like you're chancing your arm

Sqeebling · 30/04/2022 21:12

How much did Apple quote

PurpleDinosaurpark · 30/04/2022 21:12

He quoted for a service, you agreed it was correct & agreed to the cost. Next time do a bit of research or at the very least be aware of what your device is. Even so I don't think it would have made much difference to the price.

Hankunamatata · 30/04/2022 21:15

You haven't been scammed, You agreed with what he said and to the price to fix not his fault you didn't listen. Screen repairs are pricey no matter how old the ipad.

Hankunamatata · 30/04/2022 21:16

All you had to do was look the serial number up on the back of the ipad before you went and it would have told you what it was

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 30/04/2022 21:16

I have a newer iPad Air and was quoted over £300 for screen repair from several places (Apple themselves quoted £400), so £150 seems a fair price to me for an older iPad tbh. If you did actually have a 5th generation you’d be paying a lot more than £150.

anewername · 30/04/2022 21:20

I paid £50 for a iPad mini and thought that was steep. That was a fix stall in my local high street !

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 30/04/2022 21:41

How is it a scam?

You took your iPad in and agreed to pay £150 for him to repair it. He did exactly as he agreed to do and charged you the price you agreed to pay.

Surely you knew how old your iPad was and what generation and model?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/04/2022 21:46

You asked him to replace the screen at an agreed price which he did. You didn’t pay him to date your iPad. You haven’t been scammed but you’ve probably been a bit silly to do no research until after the event.

Hugasauras · 30/04/2022 21:47

But he repaired it Confused Surely you know how old your own device is?

Nobeautysleep · 30/04/2022 21:48

like I said before I didn’t know what model
my ipad was. I was relying on him to tell me, naive yes but thats what happened.
its a scam as hes given me a price and ive accepted based on a false representation of what the repair actually was.

VodselForDinner · 30/04/2022 21:49

Would your preoccupation due to children, and inability to know what product you own have disappeared if he had said “ah yes, this is a first generation iPad and the screen will be £150 to replace” ?

I gather not.

You asked for the screen to be replaced, he gave you a quote which you accepted, and now the job has been done.

YABU

Hugasauras · 30/04/2022 21:49

As to whether it's worthy of repair or not, if you were willing to pay £150 and are still using it then presumably it was worth repairing to you or you wouldn't have bothered in the first place?

Hugasauras · 30/04/2022 21:51

It's not a scam. He quoted a price and replaced the screen. How old your iPad was is irrelevant in that transaction. You clearly felt it was an appropriate price to pay for the device you use, so what does the age of it matter now?

mummymummymummummum · 30/04/2022 22:00

Why not ring them and ask how much it would cost to repair a 1st gen model before you get pissed? Then take it from there.
