To take water away from puppy at night?

keratoms · 30/04/2022 18:50

We're picking up a chihuahua puppy in a few days. We are going to crate train so have got her a crate for downstairs and a crate for the bedroom. The downstairs crate has plenty of room for her bed and a water bowl but not much else.

The bedroom crate due to the size of the bed only has enough room for her bed and blanket. Is that okay or do we need to make space for water? Never had a puppy before so not sure of the correct way to do this. Getting different info on Google.

Have attached the picture of nighttime crate.

Thank you.

I know my puppy wakes to drink water at night so I would always have it available..

Mousespace · 30/04/2022 18:59

We have a 18 week labrador puppy and no water in the crate. My partner gets her out every night at 2am for a pee and occasionally she will have a drink, but she's never desperate, same when I get her out at 7am.
One of my co-workers has her brother and he takes the water away a few hours before he's even in the crate at night to try and prevent the night pee. I've seen this online but we don't do it. From the sounds of it it hasn't stopped his puppy needing the night pee either.

You can get water bowls/ dispensers that attach to the side of the crate. I wouldn’t leave a pup without water especially as we are going into summer.

SunshineCake · 30/04/2022 19:00

You don't need two threads on this but your dog does need water at all times.

Your Puppy/Dog should have access to clean, fresh water at ALL times.

Enjoy!

Hi
You should never leave an animal without access to water.
Consider putting a hard flooring in that case your pup could, probably will, slip between the wide and get stuck and be uncomfortable.
Try putting a cover over some of the cage to give him or her somewhere to feel bit safer and it might help at night if you have cats so he can sleep uninterrupted by a curious feline paw.😀
Also put a puppy lad down away from food and bed if possible.
In the night take puppy out for a wee every four hours .
Have toys in cage for him to cuddle.
Good idea to buy some books to give you confidence.
All your family must be consistent, don't expect him to learn if you are not all giving him the same rules.
When seeing a scary thing, say a noisy road drill, don't fuss him, walk calmly on then reward him after he's calmly followed you.
Plenty of love, plenty of time, patience, show positive enforcement, never ever smack him or punish him.
Dogs will get up to mischief of left alone too long but equally don't never leave him else you'll create separation anxiety.
Good luck.be kind,have fun.

That crate looks very crowded. Any chance you can get a smaller bed so you can put a drink bowl in with her?

I tried the large hamster watering bottles for using on a car journey but my dogs couldn't work out how to get the water out so I'm not sure that'll work for you.

FabFitFifties · 30/04/2022 19:08

I wouldn't. Dogs obviously feel the heat more than us, and summer is coming. My dog had several drinks overnight, without fail. Noisily on the landing 😂The obvious point to make is, although the crate is small, a chihuahua puppy is going to be teeny tiny. If you took that big puffy bed out, and replaced with vet bed ( like a fleece that washes and more importantly dries really quickly) there would be room for a small bowl. Vet bed is flattish, but warm, cosy and practical, for the circumstances. Some pets shops do there own versions of vet bed, which sre cheaper. You can buy big ones and cut into half easily.

Your puppy needs access to clean water at all times.

You should also give access to an area they can mess overnight, unless you intend to get up through the night regularly. It's not fair to force the puppy to soil their bed.

You could create a small boxes in area on the outside of the crate with newspaper or puppy pads in it until the puppy is overnight trained.

Given the size of dog you're getting the mess won't be much, and you won't need much space for them to do their business. But a small boxed in area is necessary.

I am amazed that anyone needs to ask this question.

hennaoj · 30/04/2022 19:12

Put vet bed in there instead of the nice fluffy one. That fluffy one will get shredded by a young puppy and end up being a choking risk. You should then be able to fit on a bowl that attaches to the side of the cage, metal is best.

StridTheKiller · 30/04/2022 19:14

Animals need access to water 24/7. It's It's bad enough you are buying (not rescuing) a puppy (from the puppy farm?) Known to suffer because of inbreeding and keeping it in a cage.
The person who doesn't allow their puppy water to prevent wee accidents is a fucking disgrace.
This post sickens me, as an animal lover and yes, I judge. HTH.

Yeah I didn't size it up properly. I'm just going to take that bed out and get a smaller one so there is more room for her. The pink one can just be downstairs in living room or something. Not enough space. And I'll get clip on water bowl for her also

If you are on Facebook, there is a fab group called Dog Training Advice and Support that has wealth of really useful information. I wish I had been aware of it before I got my dog!!

Same. Mine has the screw on bowl from Amazon.

Hopefully your puppy won’t be destructive, mine would shred that bed in minutes. It looks very hot. For a very young puppy, I would put down a crate liner/vet bed that washes easily. Where will she toilet?

Why would u get a dog to crate it ? That crate looks crowded.take the bed out and you have space for the puppies water. Shocking post tbf

So I have a mattress for each crate. Is that a vet bed? So could I just put her on the mattress with a blanket and teddy?

It's actual stuff called Vet Bed.
Would you like to have no access to water in the night?
That cate looks quite full with just the bed will your dog fit? Can they turn round in it?

SeedyBloomer · 30/04/2022 19:25

You absolutely must put water in there - it’s cruel not to because being able to choose to drink is a basic need. Get a cage wall mountable bowl so it doesn’t spill. You’ll need to set an alarm and take it in turns to get the puppy up for a wee throughout the night, or have an ear out so you are alert if the puppy wakes and then take it out immediately. It won’t know to bark for a wee so don’t rely on that. Puppies don’t like soiling their bed.

OfstedOffred · 30/04/2022 19:25

Do you know much about owning a dog OP? It's a bit responsibility, it's better to do all this research before deciding to adopt/buy a puppy.

SpringLobelia · 30/04/2022 19:26

Our elderly girl has cushings disease and as a result she pees all the time. We asked the vet if we should limit her access to water at night and he told us sternly it is illegal to withold water from animals.

ManateeFair · 30/04/2022 19:29

Your dog needs access to water at all times and that crate is nowhere near big enough. Yes, a chihuahua is small, but it’s still a dog and not a hamster. Bloody hell.

SeedyBloomer · 30/04/2022 19:31

Ps I think the crate set up is all wrong. I’d line the crate tray with newspaper. Get an orange box from the supermarket (yes, really!) and line it with vet bed. The reason being the puppy is so tiny it won’t need a raised edge for its head yet. Vet bed will make it lovely and soft and is no different to what a vet etc would provide. Leave an empty space at the end for the toilet area. Lifting the paper and throwing the box away makes it much easier to clean the crate after an accident. Then throw the vet bed liner in the machine. The bed will be fine once the puppy stops soiling in the night.
The person you bought from should have advised you on all of this - I’d be wary that they haven’t. Do they care whether you know how to set up a crate properly? And have you got a crate training plan as if the puppy hasn’t been raised in one from birth, don’t hope you can put it in there without any fuss - it won’t happen!
