To hate customers

Somewhat lighthearted.

Working in hospitality/retail, what things do customers do that really, really annoy you when you're working? I'll start

  • Booking for 6 people and then saying "Hope it's okay we're now a party of 194"
  • Paying in cash but they're 1-20p short. "Can you cover it?" No I cannotHmm
  • Sitting on tables that are dirty/unset/in the process of being cleaned when there are clean and set tables literally next to them. Then complaining about the lack of cutlery.
  • Buying the cheapest pint, saying it's flat/doesn't taste right, then swapping for the most expensive pint.
  • Picking up an allergen menu and then saying "is this all you do?" No that's all we do GLUTEN FREE it says at the top!!!!!!!!!

I used to work in a shoe shop, including children's shoes. I absolutely could not get over some of the things I heard from some customers. They literally thought I was a paediatric podiatrist. I was often told I was the "expert" and grilled on how feet would develop, what to do about wonky feet etc. and if they needed a doctor. Hardly any parents get down and look at what they are buying and feel around a kids foot in a shoe.

I got paid £8 an hour, I was not responsible for your kids feet. YOU ARE! If they rub though, they want you fired.

I would never buy a pair of shoes without looking and feeling around myself. I am the parent, not the shop assistant.

Wait, why can’t you bring your own food to soft play?

The classic, "Oi! You!".

I don't respond. My name isn't Oi.

6 Nations Wales Vs England 7 deep at the bar of a massive sports bar. Woman losing her shit because I was serving every single person around her but her.

When she finally stopped clicking her fingers in my face I asked if she was ready to place her order. She wanted to complain I said order or leave nobody is going to have time for you today.

Who the hell thinks it is acceptable to click at people. She wasn't aline either it's a common tactic. I had a rule when j supervised I'd tell the staff if they click at you they are last

I worked running a paintball site for a while. We would get people asking us to open up for a weekday for a group of say 20 people (usually only open weekends, and pre-book only). So we would staff up for 20 people and get sufficient food in, only for half or more of the group not to show. They would then ask for the non-refundable deposit to be returned for the no shows. I thinki the worst case of that was when an entire group of about 30 people cancelled on the morning because the weather wasn't perfect, and still demanded the return of their deposit. What do people think "non-refundable" means (we had it clearly in the T&Cs as well)?

Other ones were people who didn't read the info we sent out when they booked.

  • No, we don't supply footwear like skating rinks and bowling alleys, and strappy sandles aren't suitable for running round in the woods

  • No, the minimum age is 12 and we won't let an 8 year old play because his brother is, for safety reasons

  • No, we can't move to indoors if the weather isn't good

  • Absolutely NO alcohol to be consumed by players (it's a potentially very dangerous sport)

  • No, non-refundable deposits for the 10 who didn't show can not be used to pay for your consumables, that goes towards pay for the extra staff we brought in to cater for them

Then there were the ones who didn't listen to the safety brief.

I've had to throw people off site for dangerous behaviours, drunkenness, verbal abuse of staff, refusal to wear safety gear, being sexually suggestive or even groping female staff. Luckily for a middle aged woman with a dodgy leg, I would have a staff of fit young men to back me up.

In restaurants, when you have these massive families or mum groups come in, with their small kids, and by the time they leave the table they were sitting at is a complete tip. Food, wet wipes, paper, crayons, sauces, (twice, dirty nappies!!), and goodness knows what else - on the table, underneath the table, beside the table, dirty stuff everywhere. And they just leave all of this mess behind and leave the restaurant, leaving it to the poor servers to clean it up.

People who do this are entitled plebs. It’s awful behaviour and they are teaching their own kids shit behaviour. It shows complete disregard and disrespect.

ChanceNorman · 01/05/2022 09:18

I still remember the man who was getting in a huge round for at least 20 people, asked for each drink one by one from his list - and ordered the Guinness last!

What's wrong with that? Is it because Guinness takes a while to pour? I wouldn't know any different having never worked in a bar or ordered a Guinness, I imagine many people are the same.

Mabelface · 01/05/2022 09:19

I've been called a fucking white slag and told to suck his fucking dick because I refused a refund on something he'd obviously broken himself.

I got out of retail.

You pour about 2/3 (if I remember correctly) of the Guinness and then let it settle for a few minutes before finishing it off.

Most Guineas drinkers know to order their drink first when ordering a round.

If ordered last, you're waiting to finish it off before you can serve another customer, whereas if it's ordered first you can do the rest of the round whilst it's settling.

I regularly have to work on the customer service desk and the people that want to return an item but can’t even say hello, they just dump the item down in front of you. It’s just basic manners isn’t it?

We also have a regular that comes in every Friday to waste someone’s time. She picks a different person each week, deliberately looks for something that is not out, again something different every week, sends them off to go and find it, when she’s given it she dumps it elsewhere in the store. Never any intention of buying the thing.

Nah, you need to get the item and say, I'll take it to the front desk for you so you can pay now. Or Yes madam, it'll be waiting for you at the front desk when you are ready to pay

I work with students... which I thought would be a good switch on this thread, as many of my students work in shops, restaurants and pubs:

Emails that say

Hi Corsica
What's the word count for the essay?
Thanks
Student

Nothing else. Literally just that.

[I work over three year groups and five different modules, all of which have different length coursework...]

Hi Corsica
I missed the lecture - can you tell me what I missed?

You missed a one hour lecture. Swing by my office and let me do it all for you again.
Hell, why don't I do it individually for each of you at your own convenience. I mean there's only 80 of you.
The slides are online, you have friends...

Hi Corsica
I couldn't attend the workshop - is there anything I missed?
Umm... a two hour workshop?
Perhaps check in the 40 page handbook you've had since the beginning of term for the set reading and questions covered?

Dear Corsica
I've decided to go on holiday for 10 days from 2 May. I will need to apply for an extension for my essay. It's to see my Nan who's very old, I'm sure the University will understand.

What, when you have literally just had three weeks vacation you could have gone in? I'm not sure how "seeing my Nan" can really count as a mitigating circumstance.

Dear Corsica
Why can't we all just get two week extensions for our work?
Ummm, because I've got over 125 pieces of coursework to grade over 5 modules coming in at different times throughout May, some are 8000 word dissertations, and the deadline for all the marking is early June.

Dear Corsica
We didn't understand (read) the Assessment Brief so didn't follow it for our presentation, that won't affect our grade, will it?

And these are all from the past couple of weeks...

sandgrown · 01/05/2022 09:26

I walked up to my colleague's till to ask a question while a lady was paying contactless. She swiped too quickly and had to try again. Apparently it was my fault as I put her off !

Fraaahnces · 01/05/2022 09:08

@CorsicaDreaming on the very remote chance I can be ID’d, there is a Privacy thing I take very seriously. I’ve performed CPR more than once, and I would hate it if any of these passengers or their family members thought I was making light of the situation. I am happy to make light of the oblivious idiot asking for a coffee though. What a tool!

@Fraaahnces - I definitely didn't think you were making light of it.

My mind is still boggling that someone could ask you for a coffee when you are doing CPR and another passenger is in clear distress on the floor.

And then for them to complain you didn't get it is just WTAF?!

Quackpot · 01/05/2022 09:29

Ramming me up the arse with a trolley full of reduced fridge food, that they've been walking around with for an hour, because I won't reduce it further while I'm reducing other things.

Tipping said reduced produce back in the reduction fridge and complaining when I take it the the waste because it's all warm.

I cannot reduce what's in your trolley.

I cannot reduce food that's non compliant.

So pleased I left.

Ah thank you...i've ordered many pints in my time but never Guinness so this is absolutely something I may have done! If I ever have a group order including Guinness I'll make sure to order it first!

Question for cafe staff. Why when I order a hot drink and a meal does the drink always come ages before the food so it's getting cold by the time I can eat? Why should I have to specify that they come together? Surely it's obvious?

Yabu. Most people want to sit and have their drink while they wait for food.

Quackpot · 01/05/2022 09:32

Another,

Fire alarm sounding, visible smoke billowing from the bakery a few meters away, and people asking to be served 🤷🏻‍♀️
No mate, shops on fire, please evacuate.

Been there.

can we just nip in and get our jacket? The building is actually on fire you moron.

HollysBush · 01/05/2022 09:43

Not customers exactly, but I worked on a hospital ward with 28 female patients, and the number of people who would ring up and say “Hello, can you tell me how my Mum is doing?….”

gunnersgold · 01/05/2022 09:44

I work in retail , honestly people are sooo horrid !

Please think about the fact that I'm following my business's policies and not being an arse for the sake of it ..

Maybe if you stuck to the rules you wouldn't have to complain !

Just be nice people!

Snaketime · 01/05/2022 09:50

When the customer puts their money on the counter and not in my hand, but then expect me to put the change in their hand.

When you have just sprayed the counter to clean it and are clearly cleaning it and they just put their stuff on the till 🙄

When you are doing something behind the till (but not serving on the till) and they come and plonk their stuff on the till and stare at you, even though there is someone serving they just don't want to wait 2 minutes. Someone did this once When they had literally just watched me take the till out and was stood with it in my hand. Tell me how I am supposed to serve you when the till is in my hand?

During lockdown we had to block off aisles to stock them and had a sign saying ask for help, everyone just ignored it and came and stood next to you.

Snaketime · 01/05/2022 09:53

One that really irks me but IABU about is when people come in in the last half an hour, especially when they then pick up a basket and buy loads of stuff because we have just pulled all the stock on the shelves forward ready for morning and now have to do it all again or get into trouble, thanks.

I had this in maternity

I've come to see Tracey
Tracey who?
I don't know...
What does she look like?
She a bit fat
Yes, so are most of the women in this ward

Ah, she had a boy!
Yep doesn't narrow it down at all

Sitting at the only dirty table in the place and moaning that it's dirty.

Coming up and sitting down at a table you are in the middle of cleaning and plonking all their stuff down so you have to lean over and clean around them.
Rude bastards why can't they just wait two minutes until you've finished?

When you are balancing three or four plates and baskets and they say "Oh you forgot our bowl of chips and lasagne!"
No I didn't! I'm just not a fucking octopus!

When you've got heavy plates of food burning the skin off your fingers and you say "I've got the mixed grill, the boneless basket and the medium sirloin?"and they all just sit and stare at you.

When people have a go at you because you have politely explained that it's company policy not to allow dogs and you have to stand there while they argue with you for ten minutes and then shout abuse before flouncing out declaring they will be taking their custom elsewhere because "Obviously the mean lady hates you Fido!" 🙄

"I know it's not your fault but...."

I might have had a tough one this week 😂😂

@RightOnTheEdge

💐for you. You deserve them!

DirtyBint · 01/05/2022 09:59

NC for these as they're outing...

One customer, having just been in the pharmacy next door, puked her methadone on my counter.
Then walked away 🤢

From the other prospective,
I took my gc to a cafe. They were enjoying their food but the cake I ordered was dry. Even though we were the only customers I said quietly to the waitress that the cake was dry (stale) and could I have something else please.
She said no problem.
Then 5 seconds later from the kitchen comes this screaming banshee!
The owner apparently, accusing me of lying, not wanting to pay for the food!
At no point had I said that 🤷🏻‍♀️ nor had I been rude or made a fuss.
This batshit bint then proceeded to THROW US OUT WITHOUT ME PAYING!! 🤣🤣
My gc hadn't finished eating and I had to find us somewhere else.
GC was upset by this womans behaviour.
Crazy twat
