Somewhat lighthearted.

Working in hospitality/retail, what things do customers do that really, really annoy you when you're working? I'll start

  • Booking for 6 people and then saying "Hope it's okay we're now a party of 194"
  • Paying in cash but they're 1-20p short. "Can you cover it?" No I cannotHmm
  • Sitting on tables that are dirty/unset/in the process of being cleaned when there are clean and set tables literally next to them. Then complaining about the lack of cutlery.
  • Buying the cheapest pint, saying it's flat/doesn't taste right, then swapping for the most expensive pint.
  • Picking up an allergen menu and then saying "is this all you do?" No that's all we do GLUTEN FREE it says at the top!!!!!!!!!

Worked in retail for years. I hate people as well 🤬
Can someone plz explain the anagram? 😀

D0lphine · 30/04/2022 18:26

Yes I worked in hospitality and I can honestly say it was a nightmare because people were thick as f.

Examples - ordering something, eating the whole thing THEN complaining and asking for money off. Nope.

Complaining that they had no chips. You ordered pasta sir. Well doesn't that come with chips? ... no. No it does not.

Complaining that I hadn't poured the little bottle of tonic into the glass with ice and gin.

I could go on. I don't know what's wrong with people.

tuliplover · 30/04/2022 18:29

I think fetén organise dinners fir groups of friends and I HATE it that always the morning of or even later at least two pull out for stupid reasons. Then I have to call the restaurant and apologise. Or they just don't show up.
Worst was table for ten, went down to 7 day before, down to five when we showed up (snd at one point thought it would be three). Not my fault but staff were mad and I couldn't blame them.
I worked retail and the people that would just drop the clothes they were trying on on the fitting room floors snd leave them in a crumpled mess. And basically just treat you like a servant.
However, the other side: don't ignore me when I arrive (if it says 'wait to be seated', I expect someone to be there to seat me, not to have to stand around for 5-10 minutes looking at empty tables).
Don't interrupt an obvious intense conversation with a breezy 'everything ok'?
Don't disappear as I'm coming to the end of the meal and I have to go find you to pay the check.
And for goodness sakes don't bring out dishes and not clear the old ones!

emmetgirl · 30/04/2022 18:32

Walking straight past a great big sign that says "Please wait to be seated" and saying "do we just sit down?"

Standing right in front of a big sign saying " Toilets" and asking "do you have a toilet"

Asking "is it cold in the garden?" My normal response is "I'm the wrong person to ask, I'm 55 and am always hot"

emmetgirl · 30/04/2022 18:36

When you've got heavy plates of food burning the skin off your fingers and you say "I've got the mixed grill, the boneless basket and the medium sirloin?"and they all just sit and stare at you.

Oh yes that drives me crazy. They just all sit and look at you blankly.

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 30/04/2022 18:37

Cuntstomers

rahjama · 30/04/2022 18:38

When you are balancing three or four plates and baskets and they say "Oh you forgot our bowl of chips and lasagne!"
No I didn't! I'm just not a fucking octopus!

This makes me sooooo mad

surely same for same?

rahjama · 30/04/2022 18:39

Parents who let their children run around in the restaurant and then are rude to you when you ask them to sit down/stop screaming because you're getting complaints from other customers.

If your kids don't behave, don't bring them out. Or give them an ipad/some colouring.

This makes me sooooo mad

But we’ve all had experience of dishes being forgotten
and you wait
and everyone else with their food in front of them waits
so you start on your steak
and then on your last Mouthful… you finally manage to get waitresses attention, and she delivers chips at same time as collecting everyone’s finished plates!

petshihtzu · 30/04/2022 18:41

Being treated like a personal assistant. Its fkin new look not Harrods!!!!!!!!

YousirNames · 30/04/2022 18:42

In retail - A customer had a go at me for literally 20 minutes straight earlier today because her order is late. Now that it is in, would she like to book delivery? No, she isn't ready for it.

Also had a lady properly shout at me once because I phoned her when she was in the bath.

petshihtzu · 30/04/2022 18:44

Oh and "they need to get more of you on the till" really annoyed me. Wer were always understaffed and you're not allowed to have all staff on the till!!

So they were right
the restaurant needed to hire more staff and get more people on the tills!

AlexCabot · 30/04/2022 18:51

Supermarket worker here. If the product isn't scanning and you say "Oh, it must be free then" please be aware that the person on the till wants to punch you in the face.
It's never been funny.

StrawberrySquash · 30/04/2022 18:55

When you are balancing three or four plates and baskets and they say "Oh you forgot our bowl of chips and lasagne!"

I will clarify that they are bringing a couple of extraordinary things because if the chips don't turn up it can be hard to get hold of someone if they are off serving other tables. Probably not a lasagne because I'd assume it's obvious that a main is missing and so you'll be coming back.

Examples - ordering something, eating the whole thing THEN complaining and asking for money off. Nope.

Again, if you can't get hold of someone and everyone else is eating and you're hungry. Sometimes you just decide to eat the thing. I'm sure there are CFs too, but sometimes it's just practicalities. Mostly I hate to complain so don't, but it's reasonable to say if something was off. One of worst things about eating out is trying to get the attention of staff. I know it's generally not your personal fault, but it's frustrating when you're paying a reasonable amount of but can't get a fork/pepper/drink/whatever.

I’ll raise you a massive sign saying “FIRE EXIT, STAY CLEAR.

Too many times people stand in front of it and are surprised when it opens (it leads to the storeroom and the fire exit outside ) or worse, lean over and look at things around it putting the top of their head in the door’s way. The sign takes up 1/4 of the door, eye level and can be seen from at least 18 feet away.

sqirrelfriends · 30/04/2022 18:58

People are the worst, I didn't realise until I worked in retail.

Someone shouted at me once because I showed her green trousers when she had asked for olive (I had told her we didn't have anything olive coloured in store and said we did have some in a different shade...)

Another charmer told me I was a loser and would never amount to anything because I wouldn't give them free stuff for an inconvenience they caused themselves.

LouLou198 · 30/04/2022 19:03

It's years since I worked in hospitality but the one that would really grate was when people would sit down, not even look as the menu and say "I will have the usual" when I had never seen them before!!! Grin

Ahhhh found the shitty customer!!

dropthevipers · 30/04/2022 19:05

This is why I can never work in retail-I would go batshit mental with a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire before the week was out.

Idbemonica1 · 30/04/2022 19:06

I work in retail and wear a uniform in the colours of the company logo, with a badge again with the company logo on it. Why oh why do customers ask " do you work here?"
No, i'm going to a fancy dress party as a retail assistant and thought i'd just fill these shelves before i go!

squashedalmondcroissant · 30/04/2022 19:22

Just remembered a notable example from the other day - a woman came in to buy an item. Upon finding out that we couldn't take her cash (we are a card only business), she proceeded to say that she didn't have a card, pick up the item and try to walk out the store with it?!?! The item isn't free just because you can't pay for it!! My colleague had to spell it out for her and say 'I'm sorry but if you can't pay for it you can't have it' before she stopped..
