AIBU to think that short skirts and cleavage are totally inappropriate professional dress?

Following the recent shenanigans about Angela Rayner crossing and uncrossing her legs while wearing a mini-skirt to throw Boris Johnson off his stride ... And further back, I was cringing at Theresa May standing outside No 10 as she took office as PM, flashing her cleavage. I really think if women wish to be taken seriously in politics and the professions, that they should not flash the flesh. In parliament, men are expected to wear jacket and tie, so why should women not have similar professional dress guidelines?

Good examples for me are the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg and Emma Vardy wearing very structured suits and coats that do not distract at all from what they are saying.

Maybe you should stop looking at women’s chests and legs and look at their faces instead if you’re so easily distracted.

FlibbertyGiblets · 30/04/2022 00:54

Eyes are marvellous things, they can swivel and look away, try it, you might be surprised. HTH.

Human nature, I'm afraid. How can you ignore what is right in front of your eyes? If I put my boobs / legs on display, surely I intend it to be noticed? Fine outside the workplace, but not in it.

ChazzaGirl · 30/04/2022 01:03

I’ve got breasts, therefore I have a cleavage. Why do I have to hide this fact? I don’t have my breasts out on show for all to gawp at, but if I have a slightly lower cut top it’s going to show a bit of cleavage. I’m not ‘flashing the flesh’ - I’m being a woman.

You’re not Jacob Rees Mogg by any chance, are you?

So when a woman has thought about what she wears (and we usually do), and she has decided to display her boobs/ legs etc, she is not expecting others to look at anything but her face?

Put everything back another 40 years why don't you op!!?

Women CAN and SHOULD be able to wear what they like.... it's that simple

Bore off with your 'structured suits'

FlibbertyGiblets · 30/04/2022 01:08

Do you write for a redtop? All this talk of display, flashing, flesh, v reminiscent of downmarket publications.

PansyPetunia · 30/04/2022 01:09

And you mention LEGS!!! What the hell is wrong with having visible LEGS?

By distracting yourself with porn. I hear that's how all the Tory MPs are doing it nowadays. YABU @Shamwari22.

PansyPetunia · 30/04/2022 01:12

With reference to a female body part..

It's not 'displayed' .... it's just there
It's not being 'flashed' ....it's just there
It's not 'flesh'..... it's the human body

Why are you so scared of it? If the men are having some sort of reaction or distraction when confronted with the sight of a female body then I would think the onus is on THEM , don't you think?

Soooo dressing like a proper man then?

So how would you feel about men going around displaying what they've got? I don't mind an ogle on the beach / football or rugby pitch/ reality show/ or even being amused by 'builders bum' but not when the focus is work and some level of seriousness/ professionalism is required.

When I get dressed I’m not thinkingb’ohh I wonder how I can show off my cleavage?’ I’m thinking, is that clean? Does it fit…jobs a good un!

If there’s builders bum on show, it’s because a builder is working. You’re ‘amused’ by that but think there’s something wrong with woman displaying a bit leg or cleavage in their work attire? There’s really something wrong with you (apart from being JRM).

PansyPetunia · 30/04/2022 01:40

I don't mind seeing mens legs, bit of chest.... what's the issue?

Are you scared of ankles too? This isn't Bridgerton!

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/04/2022 01:45

If you want to campaign for women to be held to the same dress standards as men, go right ahead. No make up fine, hair messy, fine, same suit for a month, fine, hair short and shapeless, fine.

Once you've done all of that, we'll revisit cleavage.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/04/2022 01:48

I do worry about men. They obviously can't cope with women having women's bodies.☹ Maybe they should stay at home doing drilling, cooking, gardenin, cleaning etc and leave the important stuff to women who aren't so distracted by frivolities.

Have you never had your retinas destroyed when sitting at a coffee shop and a middle aged man in non supportive lyrca bike shorts struts by? You try to look away, but they travel in groups and there is no where safe at eye level.

KosherDill · 30/04/2022 02:29

MrsTerryPratchett has nailed it 100%

I’d also add: having and showing clearly in your work clothes the natural body shape of your genes or your choice or your lifestyle, without any criticism.
as above with body weight.
Plus only shaving your facial hair if you can be arsed
straining shirt buttons gather absolutely no comments at all.
your body hair is exactly left as it is
Your eyebrows are left exactly as they are
plus the expectation that you will wear only comfortable flat shoes and socks at work all day and look perfectly smart, professional and acceptable while doing that.
no expectations whatsoever that you should visit the toilet just to check your appearance during the working day.
