To think this may need more urgent attention now?? Medical issue

DH is worrying me a bit. He's had a skin issue now for around 2 months. It's like his skin is on fire and it's getting worse. It's itchy all over, he said feels like things crawling over him and he has cracked and scabbed skin in large patches on his arms, legs, tummy and back.

He's been to the doctors twice who keep saying it's eczema (I've got eczema and it looks absolutely nothing like it but I appreciate I'm no doctor!).

He's tried steroid creams, steroid tablets, antibiotics... Nothing is touching it.

He's so miserable tonight, says he feels like he's burning everywhere (he doesn't have a temp though I checked).

Would I be unreasonable to suggest he gets this looked at more urgently now? Maybe even A&E? 111?! Anything! Or do we trust the GP that it's "just" eczema?

That's a bit harsh @Sugarplumfairy65. PP has said she had similar and went to A&E and was then admitted.

Valhalla17 · 29/04/2022 21:41

Got a pic OP?

sarahc336 · 29/04/2022 21:42

Sounds like my partner eczema, he's under dermatology for it and requires imunosuppressant medication for it , eczema can be this bad x

urticaria?- has he had anti bionic? my poor mum was absolute months of this.apart from pain, unsightly it took ages to end and had to have some sorta light therapy.

IStandWithMaya · 29/04/2022 21:45

I think the feeling of having things crawling all over him is symptomatic of something specific?? Not a Dr but I'm sure I've read it somewhere.

It can be nerves misfiring
I have ms and it's a symptom caused by this

twntho · 29/04/2022 21:46

Cholestasis? Any other symptoms Op
I actually think if he's too the point of it being unbearable then perhaps A&e is the right place, it could be a liver problem

KatieB55 · 29/04/2022 21:46

I would go to A&E as they can give stronger or IV antihistamine that might help. It sounds dreadful and a long wait til Tuesday.

I have had spontaneous urticaria for two years now, I'm on eight antihistamines a day plus an antibiotic and vitamin b. I also use a moisturiser every day.I itch and scratch a lot, its much worse in the evening and wakes me up at night. Ask for a referral to dermatology if you don't get any joy from the GP. I'm going back to the hospital this week to ask for different medication, I'm permanently exhausted with lack of sleep.

Has anyone mentioned Xolair injections?

Tittyfilarious81 · 29/04/2022 21:49

I'd tell him to go to A&E where they can look at it and run some tests plus give him a strong antihistamine if he needs it .

Hey OP, I was just wondering what your husbands diet is like? I’ve had psoriasis for over ten years and in my case gluten makes it so much worse

Wam90 · 29/04/2022 21:59

Agree that you may need liver function tests to rule out another illness, pharmacy would definitely help with regards to creams and if they think it may be scabies, but for the immediate relief I’ve found lanolin nipple cream is really good as a barrier over sore patches of skin, it might give some relief to him so he can get some rest. I hope he feels less distressed soon.

MrsFionaCharming · 29/04/2022 22:05

A&E doctors will have less experience with dermatology than the GP, and the chance of there being an on call dermatologist on a Friday night is incredibly slim. He needs to push the GP for a dermatology referral, or if you can afford it find a private one.

ChuckMater · 29/04/2022 22:05

Ask gp to refer to Dermatology

EarlGreywithLemon · 29/04/2022 22:06

Has he had covid recently? I’ve heard this mentioned in relation to covid/long covid

Foodbanksshouldbeobsolete · 29/04/2022 22:08

Has he had covid?

Foodbanksshouldbeobsolete · 29/04/2022 22:09

Has he had a cold type bug recently which wasn't covid?

RedDiamond · 29/04/2022 22:09

No offence meant but is he a regular drinker of alcohol?

AiryFairyLights · 29/04/2022 22:10

Issue33 · 29/04/2022 20:17

No he hasn't! They literally took one look at him and have decided it's eczema and that's all they've been trying to treat.

It’s probably been mentioned but if it were scabies you and anyone else would be affected as it’s highly contagious x

Flatwhitetostayin · 29/04/2022 22:10

Severe itching can be a symptom of long covid. My partner has an autoimmune condition and him and several of his acquaintances who had long covid and the same condition all experienced severe itching. Antihistamines worked for them but it seems different antihistamines work for different people so might be worth experimenting. Sounds torturous. Hope he gets to the bottom of it sooner rather than later.

doodlejump1980 · 29/04/2022 22:11

Sounds like how my Dad described his cellulitis.

HerbertChops · 29/04/2022 22:13

I developed liver issues from overactive thyroid and had all over itching, drove me insane, was sleeping about 2hrs a night but GP didn’t help. Had a rash all over my back too. I got some anti itch cream that was excellent, called Eurax, and had baths with Epsom salts or bicarbonate of soda. Both really helped the itching. I tried a small bit on my wrist first before running a whole bath in case it was irritating.
