to ask Christians about dinosaurs...

This is a serious question - so I have been thinking a lot lately about whether God exists, the meaning of life and why is the world in such a terrible state... been thinking about going to church but still feel I am on the fence. One question which has really got me thinking (after watching dear old David Attenborough... ) is where do dinosaurs fit into all this. Sorry if this sounds very weird but I would love to hear an explanation!

When people mock a particular religion is the problem

Why is that a problem?

The UK is a free society where we mock Conservatives, Labour, vegans, conspiracy theorists and anti-vaxers. Why should religion be immune from mockery?

Againstmachine · 01/05/2022 19:02

Can you quantify that, it's rather a sweeping generalisation

If you don't believe they have spent years persecuting people where have you been, I don't have to quantify history does that for me.

Christians are very intolerant to being mocked even though they have spent last 1500 years being really awful and being total scum but hey they don't like it when someone makes a joke.

I actually despair over the state of education and society when I read things like this.

Are you particularly tolerant of being mocked yourself @Againstmachine ? Absolutely no one I know likes it, religious or not.

Againstmachine · 01/05/2022 19:04

So Christians haven't spent that time persecuting , I despair over your education.

I don't particularly care.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/05/2022 19:05

I'm not going to quote @Againstmachine because it will be deleted soon but that post is exactly what I hate. It's not mockery, it's abuse. 1.5 billion people aren't scum. This is no more acceptable than calling black people scum.

So every single Christian in history has been total scum or do you mean organised religion or politics posing as religion

Except I didnt say that, I didn't accuse people of being scum, I said past Christians were, you forgot the crusades , you forgot inquisitions, you forgot Salem and more than I can count.

Againstmachine · 01/05/2022 19:09

I disn't say that I said Christians had behaved like scum.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/05/2022 19:12

I disn't say that I said Christians had behaved like scum.

If I said blacks are scum it would be monstrous. Saying I didn't mean all blacks wouldn't make it better.

That doesn't change, whatever group you peddle your bigotry about.

Burgoo · 01/05/2022 19:13

I think its something like that God created everything and dinosaurs did exist. Then they died and Jesus came and all that rigmarole. I don't think most Christians doubt that dinosaurs existed because it doesn't clash with their version of events. They can attribute it all to the old testament.

On a side note, you aren't being unreasonable. I've asked rather forceful questions about god in the past and you are sounding as mild as they come!

complete rubbish religion is a choice, skin colour isn't, that's pretty offensive.

Burgoo · 01/05/2022 19:14

@donquixotedelamancha

One could argue that you can't choose to be black but you can certainly choose to be religious.

Sure, the last 2000 years would have been a hell of a lot nicer for the Jews if they'd just taken the hint and given up their faith.

You can argue lots of things but why would you want to argue that bigotry is justified, whatever the group it's directed at?

OMG12 · 01/05/2022 19:18

I actually despair over the state of education and society when I read things like this.

Well, fortunately your despair is misplaced. If you specify the particular situations you are including in your, er, “argument” we can discuss those.

Now of course, Christians, together with every other religion, philosophy etc have been involved in persecution, both giving and receiving. However this has largely been tied up with political positioning, and it is largely those in power who have committed such acts rather than your average believer.

I was rather more taken with your Christian’s are “scum” point though to be honest! Do you think Christian’s are alone in any acts of persecution?

donquixotedelamancha · 01/05/2022 19:21

You are so bigotted you have multiple posts about black people, you seem to be the bigotted one.

Christ, you are really reaching. Would you prefer if I used the analogy that you can't call gay people scum or vegans scum?

Is there some argument I could use to get across to you that abuse of whole groups because of their shared characteristics is wrong?

Think how you would feel if someone said every member of your political affiliation/job/skin colour was scum.

Againstmachine · 01/05/2022 19:22

Ah so we are going down road it wasn't believers it, was political positioning it was done in name of religion was it not, so no they are responsible.

Persecution and being a dick to others is a Human thing. It is not specific to one religion or even religion in general. History shows this.

GoldenOmber · 01/05/2022 19:37

tbh as a Christian I’m more puzzled about why your claim we’ve been scum specifically for 1500 years, but only for 1500 years. Everything peachy for the first 500 years then? Or has the scumminess been going for the full two millenia but had some non-scum break years?

Againstmachine · 01/05/2022 19:43

Christ, you are really reaching. Would you prefer if I used the analogy that you can't call gay people scum or vegans scum?

Except you are the one who keeps mentioning different groups.

You really have a problem.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/05/2022 19:46

In fact you don't even need to look to history to see humans persecuting other humans @Againstmachine you just need to turn on the news.

OMG12 · 01/05/2022 19:52

If you really can’t see where your argument falls down, it probably isn’t worth engaging further. You appear to be extremely angry though, I suggest you might need to find ways to address this and it would probably do you well to step away from the internet for a while.

I'm not angry this is passive agressive rubbish to accuse others of being angry when they are.
