to ask Christians about dinosaurs...

EastYorksLass · 29/04/2022 17:46

This is a serious question - so I have been thinking a lot lately about whether God exists, the meaning of life and why is the world in such a terrible state... been thinking about going to church but still feel I am on the fence. One question which has really got me thinking (after watching dear old David Attenborough... ) is where do dinosaurs fit into all this. Sorry if this sounds very weird but I would love to hear an explanation!

I think its ridiculous to believe that a god created the universe over billions of years and used evolution to get a wee human to worship him/them.

Christians don't think that. Broadly mainstream Christians don't think they understand why God does things, she's ineffable.

There is a lot of Christian discussion on this debating the purpose of free will but it's generally around the choice to worship God being good for us.

'Christians' think quite differently about all this. They (because of a dude called Calvin) believe that God determined everything that would happen to creation from the start and those who will worship God (the elect) are already chosen. If you asked why they'd just say because God is brilliant and you just don't understand His ways (Calvin's God is definitely male).

Pumperthepumper · 30/04/2022 10:59

Excellent. What about a universal life force?

girlmom21 · 30/04/2022 11:01

@Topgub because the sea existed a long time before vimto was created and it isn't purple and doesn't taste like fruit...

donquixotedelamancha · 30/04/2022 11:07

What about a universal life force?

You mean like an energy field created by all living things? That surrounds us and penetrates us. One that binds the galaxy together.

A powerful ally, that would be.

Exactly like that.

But I believe it is. The vimto god told me it was. He whispered it in my ear.

You just need faith. If you were special like me and had a special relationship with the vimto god like I do, you'd see the truth.

I'm utterly outraged at your lack of respect. How dare you call my beliefs stupid?

donquixotedelamancha · 30/04/2022 11:09

Exactly like that.

Presumably it also has a light and a dark side?

People here are saying they believe in ID.

And also that god loves humans and wants them to worship him

So Christians who go the ID route do believe that. With the obvious god moves in mysterious ways, ours is not to wonder why, cognitive dissonance, get out clause

In fairness that is literally what the catholic churches believe about eucharistic bread and wine.

This is such a weird argument to have with yourself.

It is a bit. I feel like as a Christian I should pretend to be all outraged and shocked and splutter “but but but don’t you CARE about the BIBLE?”, when people are so clearly longing to get that sort of response. 🤷‍♀️

(can’t believe nobody on the thread yet has claimed they were asked to leave Sunday school at the age of six for asking difficult questions.)

Pumperthepumper · 30/04/2022 11:46

Someone did say they were arguing with a nun age six!

GoldenOmber · 30/04/2022 11:52

Haha, I missed that.

As usual it seems perfectly fine to ridicule Christianity but never any other religion. At least we haven't got Christian fighting Christian as in the situation right now in Afghanistan. (Muslim fighting Muslim)

I can't imagine the ridicule Christians would get if they were all fighting each other (for being the wrong type of Christian)

i also think it's ridiculous to believe a universe sprang out of nothing. That to me takes more blind faith than believing in a creator.

Try going to parts of Northern Ireland and the west of Scotland if you don't think " Christian " fights "Christian". And I use inverted commas ontentially.

I’d be very, very surprised if the Protestant/Catholic divide had passed you by. Was this a serious comment?

Roundandroundandroundwego · 30/04/2022 12:46

@@Topgub The problem trying to discuss religion with people like these is that they only have three types of answer . (That's too difficult to answer - that's belief or god's will). (Asked for proof of facts - quote some scripture and twist it to fit), (Feel thretend - try to sound superior by referencing how you were not taught or your ignorance of their beliefs) 🙄

Thehundredthnamechange · 30/04/2022 12:46

I am a Christian. I believe the story of Creation as literal truth. Dinosaurs are actually, according to some people, mentioned in the bible. This is from an article about dinosaurs in the bible:

"Even though the word dinosaur is not used, Scripture does indeed talk about them. The words that we see are behemoth, dragon, Leviathan, and serpent, which can be a number of dinosaurs."

You can read the article here either than me trying to quote or explain it.

If you're interested in discussing your thoughts about God or asking questions and hearing other people's opinions, have you thought about joining an Alpha course? Many churches run them and they're lovely. A warm, safe, friendly environment to have a chat, share your thoughts and experiences and ideas, no stupid questions and all opinions welcome and respected. Can't recommend it enough ☺️

Please tell me you're being ironic. Please. I refuse to believe that someone can be so ignorant.
