to ask Christians about dinosaurs...

This is a serious question - so I have been thinking a lot lately about whether God exists, the meaning of life and why is the world in such a terrible state... been thinking about going to church but still feel I am on the fence. One question which has really got me thinking (after watching dear old David Attenborough... ) is where do dinosaurs fit into all this. Sorry if this sounds very weird but I would love to hear an explanation!

I find the t rex the least likely to be in anyway as depicted. I mean those tiny arms!!

This would be a much better thread if we all discussed our favourite dinosaurs.

Irritator
🤗

I think we are maybe at cross purposes - pardon the pun.

What made you say it can be dated? Why did you make that point? I'm just wondering how that helps and what that proves.

It doesn’t prove anything. That poster said the bible isn’t authentic because we can’t say ‘it was written by Alan Brown’. I’m not summarising the rest of that conversation, feel free to go back and read it.

If Christians believe in evolution as opposed to creationism and what point on our journey from small rodent like mammal to homo sapian did God decide to care about us more than the rest of his 'creation'?

👏👏

Pumperthepumper · 29/04/2022 20:49

Oh this is too dull.

Getting back to the conversation, I’d love to know if people really believe in a man in the sky. I see the appeal of believing in an omnipotent kind of force, like a thread running through every aspect of life that means people regenerate when they die into more living things. But I can’t see how it could be a man just floating about in clouds, waiting.

Wow it's just a straightforward question but if you can't answer don't worry.

girlmom21 · 29/04/2022 20:52

@shabbaboot you're not interested in discussion though - you're just mocking people who believe something different to you or people who are respectful of other beliefs

We have a zoo near us called ‘Noah’s Ark’. I was a TA many years ago and we took the children for a day out. I was seriously shocked when we had a talk about how the Earth was only 6-7k years old and that dinosaurs were fake. They were also guilty of breeding tigers for circuses. 😁

I'd like a pet velociraptor but my house is quite small. Can anyone recommend a wee one that would suit inner city living.

Again, I’m not religious - but I can see the temptation in an external force guiding life. Not a man in the sky but a force like gravity, I suppose.

Yes, so you did - and I agree, it doesn't.

3peassuit · 29/04/2022 21:01

I went to a convent school and was taught evolution back in the sixties. The 6 days God created the earth in were limitless periods to time and the word day was used to put it into some sort of context. I think the Nuns would have laughed at the idea of dinosaur bones put there to confuse us.

I'm not a Christian. I don't care if you want to try to pick fights with Christians, I've done so myself. You just aren't very good at it, so I suggested building up to it by annoying less easygoing demographics.

My DH is a committed Christian. He’s says dinosaurs lived 65 million years ago then were wiped out, possibly by an asteroid, and became extinct. Only nutters think any thing else (his exact words)

This. I'm Christian, know lots of Christians and don't personally know anyone who thinks different.

Your post is like thinking that Muslims all believe sharia law is correct. Religions are big, there's lots of variety of belief within them.

Onwards22 · 29/04/2022 21:05

Does the bible say that humans are more important than other animals?

donquixotedelamancha · 29/04/2022 21:06

Your post is like thinking that Muslims all believe sharia law is correct.

But most Muslims do accept Sharia law, whereas very few Christians don't believe in dinosaurs.

Onwards22 · 29/04/2022 21:07

I’m interested to know what the basis of their belief is. I mean, if they believe in evolution and scientific fact, then what is the role of god in any of this?

Many people believe in Evolution but believe it was Gods work. So it couldn’t happen without him. And everything that happens is because of God.

NightLightComfort · 29/04/2022 21:12

The Bible isn’t a scientific text book, it’s a religious text. No idea what dinosaurs have got to do with it.
Genesis basically describes evolution- first God made the planets, then seas/land, then plants, then animals then man. Pretty amazing considering how long ago it was written.
Every Christian I know believes in evolution. Of course you get a few nutty American Evangelicals who claim they don’t but to be fair you get a few nutty atheists who don’t either.
Christians (the clue is in the name) follow the New Testament - the teachings of Christ. Christians are not perfect - Jesus always felt called to the sinners and not the ultra religious Pharisees. Atheists are also not perfect - consider the prince among atheists Richard Dawkins - many quote his Flying Spaghetti Monster or Pixie in the Sky, thinking they are oh so witty and original, but they choose to ignore his view that women should terminate Down’s Syndrome babies as they are not worthy of life.

SpindleInTheWind · 29/04/2022 21:15

Jesus is thought to have a been a real historical figure, though.

Yeshua bar Yoseph יהושע בר-יוסף
Jewish
Lived in or adjoining the carpenter's gaff in Nazareth in the early 1st century AD under the yoke of the Roman Empire
Spoke Aramaic
Recorded in the New Testament (earliest = Mark written c. AD 65) and Josephus; and in the Quran
Tried, executed and buried in and close to Jerusalem

I know less about some of my own relatives.

HTH1 · 29/04/2022 21:16

I think a lot of the bible is not meant to be taken literally (it came from a time when many people were illiterate and stories were the best way of getting through to them). For example, the loaves and fishes story may be true but, rather than Jesus’ food feeding all those people, he probably passed them to the people at the front while the people behind were inspired to share their food with each other.

Yet you feel the need to spend you time replying to me, so obviously you don't care do you. I`ll let that sink in for a moment 🙄

I said I don't care if you want to bait Christians, as in that's a fine thing to do.
