Jumped a red light :(... so ashamed.

Been driving for 11yrs now and first time ever, I just casually went thru a red light!

There was the pedestrian crossing traffic signals and it was not a junction, only one staright road and the lights were for crossing pedestrians to press the button.
However, I was chatting to my daughter deeply and assumes it was just a zebra crossing!... I stopped my car for the mum waiting to cross the road and once she was off the zebra crossing... I crossed the lights which were red!... the car behind me honked and then I realised :(. I never saw any flashes etc but there were black cameras on top of the lights.

I feel I am such a careless driver and also anythung could have happened right?. I am just waiting for the warning letter and points on my licence etc ....

I NEED TO BE MORE PRESENT WHILE DRIVING... God sakes 😓

We’re getting into the weeds here and it’s not relevant to the op. She didn’t mean to jump the light. I am not a sad lonely old woman. Let’s peace out and move on as it’s not helping her.

UnsuitableHat · 29/04/2022 23:22

Mistakes happen OP. Try not to dwell. You’ll probably be a bit more vigilant now.

Thanks again all.

@Gilesgoesformiles .. I see you are sympathetic 🙂

@whoopwhoopting and @Cheeseplant72 .. well we can never know who is a regular red light jumper or once off, If I do get reported then I will just accept it and pay the fine, its only right thing to do.
Sorry you and your son had a terrifying experience at crossing @Cheeseplant72 💐

OP, I haven’t ran a red light, but I have stopped at a green one, as in slowed down and stopped waiting for it to change. Confused Not quite as dangerous but still a brain fart, not properly concentrating moment.

Cheeseplant72 · 29/04/2022 23:42

Hi OP my posts were no reflection or focused on you and my son is well thank you. I appreciate that you made a mistake my point was more focused on aggressive and idiot drivers. I do hope you do not hear any more about it.

About 15 years ago, not long after I'd passed my test, I was driving down a road with lots of pedestrian crossings. I saw a police motorbike in my rear view mirror and checked my speed. As I did that, I went through a red light straight in front of him! Obviously he pulled me over, but when he saw how mortified I was he just laughed and said "it's a lot to remember in one go isn't it?" (Patronising but I'll take it over a fine!).

Just to top it off, when he'd gone I realised that my button down top had come almost completely undone without me realising and I was fully flashing my bra! He must have thought I'd done it on purpose!!!

Jesus OP in the kindest possible way get a grip!

I figured something terrible must have happened for you make a post about this. Nothing did?! It was a mistake, everyone makes them. There's no need to give it a second thought, never mind berating yourself and feeling full of shame!

Count it as a warning to be more vigilant whilst 'chatting to my daughter deeply' and clearly not concentrating on driving. Yes, we all make mistakes because we are human, but to be in control of a several tonne vehicle- you need to concentrate on driving that vehicle- not chatting so deeply that you go through a red light!

I have 1st hand experience of the aftermath of someone 'chatting deeply' to their passengers. Age 5, I watched my mother get hit by a car at a crossing and fly over the top of a car, landing on the road on the other side. I will never forget the screams, nor seeing my mother crumbled on the ground. Fortunately she survived. Despite the weeks of ITU, months of physio and years of learning to walk and talk again- she still has issues 30yrs on.

You have acknowledged you weren't concentrating, so hopefully you do going forward.

Titsflyingsouth · 04/05/2022 08:56

Oh god, I did this this morning. Was a bit confused by the road layout and listening to the sat nav and totally didn't notice the light was red. What happens now - do you get fined?

Momicrone · 04/05/2022 09:31

I see cars jumping red lights every day, you are obviously not alone

Notanotherwindow · 04/05/2022 10:02

It's usually pretty obvious if they have a camera, it's almost always yellow and you'd likely have seen the flash. Most lights don't and the ones that do are usually the lights at major intersections. The only ones I can think that I'm aware of on my regular journeys are in North London, central London and at Hastings oodles interchange.

You'll be fine and will be more careful in future not to drive on autopilot.
