Jumped a red light :(... so ashamed.

Been driving for 11yrs now and first time ever, I just casually went thru a red light!

There was the pedestrian crossing traffic signals and it was not a junction, only one staright road and the lights were for crossing pedestrians to press the button.
However, I was chatting to my daughter deeply and assumes it was just a zebra crossing!... I stopped my car for the mum waiting to cross the road and once she was off the zebra crossing... I crossed the lights which were red!... the car behind me honked and then I realised :(. I never saw any flashes etc but there were black cameras on top of the lights.

I feel I am such a careless driver and also anythung could have happened right?. I am just waiting for the warning letter and points on my licence etc ....

I NEED TO BE MORE PRESENT WHILE DRIVING... God sakes 😓

They're not cameras on top, they're traffic monitoring sensors, don't worry.

Actually its not that simple now days, sorry to hear that OP but please be aware most police forces now have online submission for dashcam footage.

www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/advice/submitting-dash-cam-footage
services.northumbria.police.uk/online-services-start/dashcam/
www.cheshire.police.uk/advice-and-support/roads-and-vehicle-safety/submit-dashcam-footage/

I have used it quite a bit for abusive and unsafe drivers.

If you hear nothing in 14 days I would relax.

girlmom21 · 29/04/2022 19:13

@whoopwhoopting well it is that simple because those cameras aren't dashcams Hmm

Saucery · 29/04/2022 19:16

You’d have to have a right busybody behind you, with a dashcam that had a clear view of the red light and the wherewithal to submit it to their local police online reporting email. Highly unlikely to happen.

I did this recently. Been driving for 27 years and never jumped a red light before.

There were two sets of lights about 50 yards from each other at a junction and I went through the 1st set on amber and carried on through the 2nd set when they were red. Thankfully not a pedestrian crossing and the traffic hadn’t started moving as they’d only just gone red. Felt awful as soon a I realised what I’d done. DS (11) was shocked and said ‘mum, are you nuts, they were red’ 😳I go that way most days for the school run and had never done it before. Got too much going on at the moment with work and wasn’t thinking.

Definitely makes you aware so won’t happen again. Don’t sweat it.

I did the exact same thing recently. I was convinced I was going to get fined. But nothing happened. It’s made me a lot more cautious though.

Actually it is that simple, let me explain simply to you! 🙄

I crossed the lights which were red!... "he car behind me honked and then I realised".

If the car behind has a dashcam and they decided to upload the footage, like I have done myself many times, the OP will likely get a penalty notice or summons from the police though her door. Is that simple enough for you.

girlmom21 · 29/04/2022 19:23

@whoopwhoopting so what you're saying is there was absolutely no need to quote me and say I was wrong? Cool, we knew that.

Gilesgoesformiles · 29/04/2022 19:27

I’d advise seeking a bit more of an exciting life if this makes you ashamed…🫠

ImInStealthMode · 29/04/2022 19:30

I did it recently OP. A route I drive every day, set of lights just before a left hand turn into a side road (allowing traffic coming the other way to make that same turn).

I could see there was nothing coming the other way and nobody crossing so no danger but somehow my brain just completely blanked the lights.

Horrified, but no harm and I've not done it again! Neither will you now you've had a little shock.

Gilesgoesformiles · 29/04/2022 19:31

@whoopwhoopting you should probably heed that advise too……ffs

FYI my DH works for the police and I have seen how it affects both him and others when accidents happen through people running through red lights and driving stupidly. So forgive me if I don't give a shit what you think, as things like this have consequences and I'm not going to stop every driver I record running a red light so see if they made a mistake.

I hope one day he does not have to come to your door because some one ran a red light 🙄

DockOTheBay · 29/04/2022 20:25

I think its an easy mistake to make, and no harm done.
I went through a red light once because there were multiple traffic lights in a row and the ones a set ahead turned green, I was looking at them instead of my own set. Again, luckily, no harm done.

Gilesgoesformiles · 29/04/2022 20:29

@whoopwhoopting there’s nowt worse than the righteous. i don’t think vigilante law is the way to go. Dangerous driving is not accidentally going through a red light at a crossing when there’s no one crossing 🥱

yellowsuninthesky · 29/04/2022 21:19

Sometimes lights are quite complicated. A couple of times I've gone through lights and thought "oh my goodness was that red".

I've also followed a lorry through a red light. We were waiting (not that long), and then he moved off, so I followed him. Then realised it was red! I don't know why he went, it wasn't long enough to think anything was wrong with the lights. I felt like a real plonker, but fortunately there was no camera.

I expect a lot of people go through a red light where there's no filter and the only way you can turn right is to turn in the couple of seconds before the traffic starts coming the other way again. My father got fined for doing that once.

Id love to see you use this as a defence "Dangerous driving is not accidentally going through a red light at a crossing when there’s no one crossing". The law disagrees with you, so your wrong. As its driving without due care and attention no matter how you like to word it.

You know what's worse than righteous though people who try to defend dangerous drivers. I hope you feel all giddy now you put me in my place, another sad lonely old woman 🙄

Gilesgoesformiles · 29/04/2022 21:48

@whoopwhoopting yeah I’m not trying to use this as defence in court am i? I’m on mumsnet like you are. I’m pointing out you’d be a nutcase if you submitted dash-cam evidence of an accidental error like this to the police….

Also please don’t attack those you disagree with with misogynistic terms such as ‘sad, lonely only woman’. It only reflects badly on you and diminishes any point you have

vipersnest1 · 29/04/2022 21:53

It happens, OP. Literally 11 years ago, I was driving and DC 1 started buggering about with my radio. I was very stressed already as said DC was being treated for a very serious autoimmune condition and I was trying not to show them how stressed I was and ended up speeding.
I was caught by a camera, took my punishment and duly attended naughty drivers' school. I hadn't ever done it before and haven't done it since.
Wait and see if you get a ticket. I doubt you will - just take more care in the future.

@whoopwhoopting your posts have got less coherent as this has gone on! Anal replies!? and the last paragraph is nonsensical

I think we can all agree that dangerous driving is bad and we should all be responsible drivers. But this thinking applies to other aspects of life too including the internet I.e you shouldn’t attack someone online by calling them a ‘sad lonely old woman’ in the same way the way you shouldn’t intimidate or belittle someone on the road. Try and consider others and commit to behaviour that makes you hold your head high. I hope you find your peace

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 29/04/2022 22:34

You'll probably be fine. Those black cameras on the lights are sensors apparently. Not cameras.

A few weeks ago, I was crossing a pedestrian crossing with my kids; traffic both directions and 4 lanes. There were cars stopped in 3 of them for the red light, we were almost in the middle of the road. A car just cake flying down the hill, theiugh the red light and missed my kids by inches. I reported to police but there were no cameras in that area pointing at the lights. The little cameras on top are apparently not cameras.

Cheeseplant72 · 29/04/2022 22:50

@Gilesgoesformiles can I ask why you think it is unacceptable for people to report careless driver's. My son was knocked of his bike by a driver who did not stop last year, at a crossing., I wish some one had caught them on their dashcam and reported them. Luckily my son was only bruised.

Gilesgoesformiles · 29/04/2022 23:02

I do not think this at all @Cheeseplant72 I abhor dangerous drivers. I just don’t think someone accidentally going through a red light after having stopped for someone to cross needs to be demonised. It was an accident,

Cheeseplant72 · 29/04/2022 23:06

@Gilesgoesformiles but how are supposed to judge who does this by accident and who does this regularly. Surely it's better to report them and late the police to decide. I could not live with myself if I discovered they hurt some one and I had not reported it earlier.
