how to know if someone has died

dogpantsx · 28/04/2022 13:00

I'm sorry in advance, I am very distressed.

My DF was a very troubled person and I had a difficult life because of that.

My parents are both very emotionally abusive.

I think my DF is dead (it is not relevant why)

Is there a way to tell?

Do you have an address?
i belief you can ask police to do a ‘welfare check’

MrsPopplecat · 28/04/2022 13:03

You can check death registrations at the registrar office for the place he may have died. If it's relatively recent, it won't be on Ancestry or online anywhere.
If there was a Will it will eventually make it onto government probate records which do go online but not sure how quickly.

Discovereads · 28/04/2022 13:05

If you know his full name and birth info, you can look up whether there is a death certificate online or call GRO and talk to a registrar.

Although if you are non-contact (as it seems you may be?) - I’m not sure you would have good reason
Normally you can ask them if the person hasn’t been in touch as normal

Xpologog · 28/04/2022 13:14

You could also Google their name and place where they live. Might come up with local news article.

Butfirstcoffees · 28/04/2022 13:16

Do you think it happened recently, like the last few days? Or do you think he has been dead while?

Thats only if you believe he may actually be lying dead in his house, not to find out when he died if its potentially been a while & it's just the OP hasn't been informed

I don't think that's appropriate.

OP which country?

Birdy78 · 28/04/2022 13:24

Try the local paper look at the obituaries online. 🍀

dogpantsx · 28/04/2022 13:25

To clarify I think he will have had a funeral and I was not told.

I know it sounds strange but I got a card for my 40th bday from my DM (low contact) and just the way it was written I can tell my DF isn't there anymore.

I'm crying so much I can barly see the computer screen.

Google the name.
It could bring up death notices/obituary/funeral notices in the local newspapers in their local area.

Discretely have a look on Social Media for people who know him, you may find a snippet of information there.

StarCourt · 28/04/2022 13:27

@dogpantsx I'd have a look for online obituaries

ToffeeNotCoffee · 28/04/2022 13:31

Contact the undertakers in his local area in case they handled his funeral ?

Phos · 28/04/2022 13:34

If you have enough contact with your DM that she'd send you a card can't you just ask her?

LIZS · 28/04/2022 13:38

Do you know where any funeral may have taken place. There might be an online list of services ( ie. Parish newsletter) or Crematorium records

Lockheart · 28/04/2022 13:42

If you are in contact with your mother (even if it is low contact) then the quickest way would be to ask her. Perhaps write to her and see if you get a response.

But if you feel you can't then you could try calling the council registrar's office. I am not certain how much they'd be able to tell you, but it's worth a go.

StooOrangeyForCrows · 28/04/2022 13:51

Check online for an obituary?

Purpleavocado · 28/04/2022 13:56

Is there anyone that you know who has contact with your family, like an old neighbour or family friend that you could ask?

LookItsMeAgain · 28/04/2022 13:57

Are you in the UK @dogpantsx or in Ireland?

There is a website called www.rip.ie that lists all of the funerals based on location in Ireland or you can search by their name.

I don't know if a similar set up is operational in the UK.

dogpantsx · 28/04/2022 14:14

@StooOrangeyForCrows how do you do that? Sorry to be dense.

dogpantsx · 28/04/2022 14:20

@LookItsMeAgain uk but thank you.

If you type in obituaries, his name and the newspaper local to where he lives you should be able to find it.

JaneJeffer · 28/04/2022 14:35

You can search for a will here if probate was applied for.

cormorant5 · 28/04/2022 14:49

Very sorry you are having to do this. I tracked someone down two years ago.
In England, Scotland is different I believe. Deaths are recorded at the local Registrars Office, see local council website. They are recorded where the death happens not according to home address. A hospital which might be in another city or county though only a few miles away.
Phone them and say it is your Father but estranged. Mostly they are very kind, they deal with the bereaved every day.
Is it out of the question to contact your Mother?
