Surely this is illegal in 2022

I live in a major city and the centre of town is known for its street preaching.
It's common to have someone at one end of the street to be preaching about a Muslim message and at the other end one that identifies as Christian. I say 'identifies' because there are plenty of good Christians that won't agree with the preacher yelled with a megaphone and posters.
The latter annoys me greatly because he is screaming (yes, screaming) about gay people roasting in the fires of hell. How is this acceptable and legal in 2022??? I sometimes yell after him 'shut-up!!!' and before I did so last time I saw a woman walking past encouraging who looked like her partner to not start a fight with him. somebody else yelled something back too.
I've never seen anyone else confront him though, but I only walk past for a short amount of time.
It has to be said that I have no idea what the Muslim people are shouting down the other side of the street, and I don't know much about their particular stance on their religion is and I don't know much about it generally either, so I can't comment on that.
How is the Christian preacher even allowed to do so given the crap he is spouting. I'd love to silence him.* *

Hmm
Ponoka7 · 27/04/2022 18:28

There was a preacher arrested for that, after lots of warnings. It's hate speech and isn't allowed in public places. Report it.

Lockheart · 27/04/2022 18:29

It might well be illegal, have you tried calling the police? Preachers of varying faiths have been arrested for similar, usually because they caused "harassment, alarm, or distress".

trollopolis · 27/04/2022 18:29

If you have no idea what the muslin preacher is saying, then why mention it at all?

And by screaming, do you I presume you just mean projecting voice loudly, not literal screaming?

As you think the comments go too far, report to the police.

Much better than having a rant online

Ponoka7 · 27/04/2022 18:30

As for Muslim preachers, they tend to talk about those who don't follow the teachings of Muhammed, Allah, the Qur'an etc and don't target groups specifically. Or they also get moved on.

PonyPatter44 · 27/04/2022 18:32

The Muslim preacher is probably saying much the same thing, and there are plenty of Muslim women walking past him wishing he would shut up as well. There's a long tradition of street preaching in England, most people treat them like the nutter you don't want to sit next to on the bus. You don't make eye contact, don't engage, don't speak to them. He isn't saying, go out and beat up gay people, he's saying God will punish them for being gay. One is incitement to violence, one is hypothetical violence at some random imaginary time in the future. Its the uncomfortable side of freedom of speech.

Rahrahrahrahannoyed · 27/04/2022 18:33

I thought I'd mention the Muslim person because people like to compare things sometimes (I, myself thought it was irrelevant to include it).
People might say why are you attacking he Christian preacher instead of the Muslim preacher.
I will happily get on to the police because I have heard this twat multiple times yelling his homophobia.

The Christian preacher was shouting hate speech which is illegal. Next time, record on your phone and report to the police.

Rahrahrahrahannoyed · 27/04/2022 18:35

@trollopolis I didn't know it was an arrestable offence.

Do you know what screaming means? It's that high pitched sound that people make when they're being chased by an axe murderer. It's not yelling, raising the voice, shouting, hectoring or anything else. You can't scream and form words at the same time.

ChocBloc · 27/04/2022 18:39

Record them and go to police. Leave the Muslim preacher out of it unless you know what they are yelling.

trollopolis · 27/04/2022 18:40

There are all sorts of potential offences - the Public Order Act of 1986 might be one angle.

Or they could go down the CPN route

But if people just rant online rather than telling the police, then of course nothing will be

So glad I'm Jewish. You won't find us doing this kind of thing.

I meant yelling loudly.

Last time I saw one of these street preachers in Glasgow they were being drowned out by the locals shouting back at him which was nice to see…rowdy Glaswegians are good in some scenarios.

Comefromaway · 27/04/2022 18:57

It’s not Chester is it? I often wonder how the homophobic hellfire preacher gets away with his hate speech. One time there were other church members with him and they tried to persuade my daughter (who was in school uniform) to go somewhere with them.

saggyhairyass · 27/04/2022 19:00

If he's ranting about homophobia ring 101.

We get street preachers in my area but apart from yelling we're all going to hell they aren't that bad.

Georgeskitchen · 27/04/2022 19:06

There are several religions that frown on homosexuality, including Islam. I'm guessing you are aware if that?

Crimesean · 27/04/2022 19:17

Freedom of speech is an important tenet of a democratic and fair society.

I very much abhor many people's opinions about various things, but I will defend their right to freedom of belief and freedom of speech.

It's only illegal if they're inciting violence or other hateful behaviour against others, or are actively harassing individual gay people rather than talking about homosexuals as a group.

Pixiedust1234 · 27/04/2022 19:18

It depends if you agree with the equality act which allows religious and philosophical beliefs to be discussed. If he isn't physically blocking you from going about your life then ignore.

yes but do they shout at you in the street, is the relevant point?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 27/04/2022 19:29

Is it Birmingham OP. You get this in Birmingham and there'll be about 3 of them outside the bookshop. Really puts me off

100% @MissusMaisel
Neither are good, but spewing it in the street is worse markedly

Rahrahrahrahannoyed · 27/04/2022 20:14

One of the reasons I haven't reported it to the police is that I've seen him on more than one occasion yelling it (I think 3 times) and I thought he'd have been banned and wouldn't show his face again. I come from a deeply homophobic family (not related to religion, just bigots) and I grew up with their hate speech and wasn't sure what us considered freedom of speech and which isn't.
