Surely this is illegal in 2022

I live in a major city and the centre of town is known for its street preaching.
It's common to have someone at one end of the street to be preaching about a Muslim message and at the other end one that identifies as Christian. I say 'identifies' because there are plenty of good Christians that won't agree with the preacher yelled with a megaphone and posters.
The latter annoys me greatly because he is screaming (yes, screaming) about gay people roasting in the fires of hell. How is this acceptable and legal in 2022??? I sometimes yell after him 'shut-up!!!' and before I did so last time I saw a woman walking past encouraging who looked like her partner to not start a fight with him. somebody else yelled something back too.
I've never seen anyone else confront him though, but I only walk past for a short amount of time.
It has to be said that I have no idea what the Muslim people are shouting down the other side of the street, and I don't know much about their particular stance on their religion is and I don't know much about it generally either, so I can't comment on that.
How is the Christian preacher even allowed to do so given the crap he is spouting. I'd love to silence him.* *

I meant that if it was an arrestable offence, I would have thought that he wouldn't have been able to come back.

Yes it's in Birmingham, often by the bookshop or just down towards the two storey tesco

Ah, yes. I’ve seen the Birmingham ones too as I used to go there a lot.

You won’t be pleased to know the Chester bloke is worse and he has a megaphone.

codeVeronica · 03/05/2022 12:52

I wonder if they would get away with it if they weren't hiding behind religion. Like if I went down my local high street and started yelling homophobic and racist spiel at passers by without the Jesus part I'd be lifted.

southlondonerhere · 03/05/2022 14:33

@MissusMaisel have you ever been to Brixton? There are preachers of all religions shouting at you in the street almost every day

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 27/04/2022 19:29

Is it Birmingham OP. You get this in Birmingham and there'll be about 3 of them outside the bookshop. Really puts me off

Are they the quiet chaps outside the big Waterstones near the Bull Ring Bull?

Haven't had the pleasure of Birmingham for ages (Thank you Covid!!!) but never heard those guys shouting.

Itwasntmeright · 03/05/2022 16:09

Lesbian here. I see them quite often shouting their homophobia. I just roll my eyes at them or give them the finger. It’s not against the law to say we are going to burn in hell, and quite frankly I couldn’t give a shit what they think. Freedom of speech applies to everybody, not just those you agree with, and a society without it looks a lot scarier than some lunatic ranting about the fiery pits of hell on the street corner. And please OP, if you aren’t homosexual, please don’t worry yourself about getting offended on our behalf, it’s quite patronising.

Do you know what screaming means? It's that high pitched sound that people make when they're being chased by an axe murderer. It's not yelling, raising the voice, shouting, hectoring or anything else. You can't scream and form words at the same time.

You are kind of missing the point there 🙄

VincaBlue · 03/05/2022 16:15

Croydon High Street is like this. I've not heard the homophobic stuff, although I'm usually dashing past so don't hear much of it

LetitiaLeghorn · 03/05/2022 16:24

Is a prediction that someone is going to hell hate speech? @

CloudSharkie · 03/05/2022 16:25

Camden, Kilburn, Hampstead (though usually antisemitic) and Walthamstow is like this; I think it’s pretty common.

Dahlietta · 03/05/2022 16:31

And please OP, if you aren’t homosexual, please don’t worry yourself about getting offended on our behalf, it’s quite patronising.

I think the world needs more people getting upset about people spouting shit about groups of people to which they don't belong, not fewer.

DogsAndGin · 03/05/2022 16:35

39% of people think it’s acceptable for someone to shout about killing gay people with a megaphone?! I’m shocked at that

BelperLawnmower · 03/05/2022 16:41

What they're shouting is a perfectly valid interpretation of biblical teaching. And in my view (and I think that is the law) it's important that offensive speech is allowed and protected.

Jellycatspyjamas · 03/05/2022 16:43

Was he shouting about killing gay people or saying that God will judge them/send them to hell? There’s a difference legally in that the first is hate speech and the second is the ranting of a religious idiot.

I was in Glasgow city centre and some street preacher was going on about abortion and people killing babies and then going off to the pub. My DD(10) and I were waiting for a friend nearby so heard more than I would have liked. I didn’t anticipate or appreciate a resultant conversation with my child about abortion over lunch.

Orthodox Judaism has issues with homosexuality.
www.myjewishlearning.com/article/orthodox-judaism-and-lgbtq-issues/

Jews don't believe in proselytising, I think that's what @JuicyBuffersElasticNut was saying. So you won't see a Jewish person on the side of the street screaming at people that if they don't convert to Judaism they'll suffer for all eternity. The anti homosexuality stance amongst the orthodox (especially ultra orthodox) is a separate issue.

EatSleepReplete · 03/05/2022 16:51

There's one of these in my town. Horrible man. He stands & catches the tourists as they wander innocently by.

newnamenellie · 03/05/2022 17:16

Is this Birmingham OP? I’ve been there a few times and noticed this in the city centre . Not really seen it elsewhere, although do have fond memories of a chap who used to stand on Oxford Circus shouting “don’t be a sinner, be a winner” in a strong scouse accent 😂

hellcatspanglelalala · 03/05/2022 17:18

Rahrahrahrahannoyed · 27/04/2022 20:17

I knew you'd say Birmingham, I've seen that knobhead yelling his head off many times!

Crumbler · 03/05/2022 17:23

If you believe in the Christian hell you also believe that gay people will go there. If you don't believe in hell, why do you care that someone says gay people will go there?

LeniGray · 03/05/2022 17:33

Quite often I can hear the drone on one of these people rabid ‘Christians’ outside my workplace, usually on a busy Saturday. I can tune him out, and although I’d rather he wasn’t out there, he’s less distracting than the bagpipe lady (atrocious) or the Lloyd-Webber ensemble 🤔

CallMeNutribullet · 03/05/2022 18:37

I'll never forget walking along a very busy street in Glasgow and a preacher yelling "if you live with someone and aren't married, you might think you're a good person, but you are a FORNICATOR!"

Literally everyone howled laughing at him.

WeDontShutUpAboutBruno · 03/05/2022 18:44

There's one that crops up here every few months.

Last time my dd took a massive speaker down, assembled her LGBTQ buddies and they blasted out lady gaga and danced to drown him out. I was very proud at their not so peaceful protest. The shops also were coming out to give the teens drinks and snacks and lots of people joined them.
