Can you get pregnant with one tube?

ivfscared · 27/04/2022 14:41

Hi everyone,

I've recently stressed my fears on mumsnet that I'm likely to be unable to get pregnant naturally due to potential hydrosalpinx on one tube. Im pretty sure I am going to end up losing at least one of my tubes. I'm having a laparoscopy at some point to determine and hsg.

I also have endometriosis, but from what I've been told it is pointing to it being mild endo.

My question is.. can you get pregnant naturally with one Fallopian tube? I'm terrified that if I do manage to keep a tube that it will be so difficult to get pregnant naturally.

Thank you xx

Yep, first month trying.

ThisThreadCouldOutMe · 27/04/2022 17:57

My mum lost a tube in the 80s. 3 years later she had an unplanned baby Grin

nearlyspringyay · 27/04/2022 17:58

Yes it's very possible. Just putting it out there would it be possible to have the tube removed too reduce the risk of ectopic?

ivfscared · 27/04/2022 17:59

@GodspeedJune I have barely any pain too . Although when I was younger I did have quite bad pain but that's now gone xx

I have endometriosis, one ovary and one fallopian tube.
I got pregnant naturally twice with no problems.
I was a youngish mum at 23 and 26 so this possibly made things easier.
Good luck.

ivfscared · 27/04/2022 18:02

@nearlyspringyay

Yes I think so, I don't see the point in keeping a damaged tube if it's likely to cause ectopic anyway! X

@GlamorousHeifer

Thank you, I'm 30 so hopefully this can be me too! X

Search for 'lucie and the bump' on YouTube, I believe she conceived with just one tube.

@GodspeedJune

Yes we have been ttc a few months.

My surgeon told me I have small lesions of endometriosis :( some is in my bowel and pod too.

Is superficial endo bad??

What does this all mean? Xx

If your bowel is involved you’re definitely entitled to be seen at an endometriosis tertiary centre. The care should be better there as general gynaes don’t always know a lot about endo.

Superficial endo tends to be the milder type but can’t usually be seen on MRI. That’s why I’m wondering if you may have the deeper type. With endo the pain doesn’t always correlate to the stage of disease; you can have mild with severe pain or severe disease with mild/ no pain.

If you’ve been trying a few months there’s still every chance you can conceive naturally x

ivfscared · 27/04/2022 18:30

@GodspeedJune

Ok I'm really panicking now.
My surgeon told me not to worry about any of it as it was small. He even told me not to look it up as it's not like what I'd find online :( he even put me off having any surgery due to my lack of symptoms!! I'm so confused.

I'm going to look at specialists xx

When I had the tube removed the gynaecologist told me that the reamaining tube would move to catch the egg being released from the ovary it's not attached to one ovary as many people and doctors believe. He's a leading ivf and infertility expert with his own clinic.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 28/04/2022 13:47

A friend of mine lost a tube through an ectopic. Had a lovely boy just over a year later. And then interpreted the doctor saying “conceiving may be harder than average” as “no need to bother with contraception” and found herself pregnant again just a few months later!

ivfscared · 28/04/2022 17:03

Thanks again ladies xx

I'm now quite concerned that my endo might be worse than I first thought :( been up literally all night googling :(

Can anyone offer any further advice on this please?

Is conceiving with one tube viable even if you have severe endo?

Had ovary and Fallopian tube removed, diagnosed with endometriosis and fibroids, and remaining ovary has small dermoid cyst.
Then a baby at 41 (no ivf)

ivfscared · 28/04/2022 18:14

@Muckymaisonette

Thank you 🥰

Did you have any symptoms with your fibroids? I'm having a hysterocopy to see if I have polyps and I'm not sure if they're the same/similar?

Singinghollybob · 28/04/2022 18:29

I had a tube removed due to hydrosalpinx and subsequently got pregnant. I was told the chance of conceiving with one tube was only slightly less than with two.

ivfscared · 28/04/2022 18:54

@Singinghollybob

That's great to hear!

Do you have endo too? What caused your hydrosalpinx? Xx

OP posts:
Singinghollybob · 28/04/2022 19:20

No I don't have endo; the tube became infected for some reason out of the blue, and I was in hopsital for over a week quite unwell.
The infection cleared up with antibiotics but the medics recommended I get it removed as leaving it would have increased the chances of an ectopic they said.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 28/04/2022 19:59

i got pregnant twice (and successful pregnancies resulting to babies) with severe PCOS, undeveloped ovaries and never having a period

i was told at 17 i was infertile to all of above,
i got pregnant in 2003 and 2009 all naturally(ie no ivf) to this day ive still never had a period and im 41

still no idea how i caught for either, with no 1 it was only because i had severe HG early(and all the way bloody through) and went to the doctors and a blood test came up pregnant(8 weeks)

with no 2 i was on clomid but as i was having no periods i was just taken tablets on random days on different months(all suggested by the hospital)
it was fortnightly scans to see if eggs have developed(always a no and ovaries were still withered)then a pregnancy test a day before new tablets just in case.

this went on for 4 bloody long years, every 2 weeks up the hospital ,monthly pregnancy tests.
(nhs wouldn't give me ivf as i already caught naturally with son 1 and as this was with the same dad it was a no, if it was a different man then they would have, I did kick off on this info but to no avail)
i did my test(3 for 1 pound from pound land at the time) to my utter shock it came up faint so i did all 3 they came up faint so i bought the clear blue one, 2-3 weeks
straight up the hospital the next day and i was 2 and half weeks
so when people say oh you got to be 4 weeks plus or miss a period for a test to show obviously not with me

so if i can conceive with withed ovaries, severe PCOS, no periods before(and after) theres hope for anyone.

this probably wont be any factor but ive never been on any form of contraception in my adult life as ive only ever had the 1 boyfriend/sex partner(ex now) he was 17 me 18 and we were together 22 years

TheElderleyBrothers · 28/04/2022 20:14

I met a lady once who had both tubes removed after ectopics and went on to have a son naturally. A woman's body can do amazing things Smile

mumtrio3 · 28/04/2022 20:25

Yes! Lost a tube due to an ectopic. Have had 3 DC since. Definitely possible although like you I was initially very sceptical.

Ginandtonic100 · 28/04/2022 20:27

I lost an ovary and tube to an ovarian cyst and went on to have twins.

Muckymaisonette · 28/04/2022 23:06

Symptoms were anaemia due to fibroids and I think the endo contributed to apparent bowel/digestive issues/javelin arse etc. (was fobbed off a fair bit by doctors).

My sister had it worse than me with fibroids. She became extremely anaemic and was in pain. Eventually she had a hysterectomy. One of the fibroids had grown so big it had affected her bladder.

Maray1967 · 29/04/2022 00:21

I had a hydrosalpinx caused by adhesions from childhood appendicitis. I have 2 DC neither of whom were ivf babies - our ivf cycles failed. I don’t have endometriosis so can’t comment on that.
I was told that I would ovulate at least every other month from the other ovary so I still had a chance despite poor ovarian reserve. I was told I had poor reserve at 30 - had ds1 at 33 and ds2 at 40.
my consultant did a dye test to see what the tubes were like. One was useless and the other was slow- but obviously works.
Get the best consultant you can. I’m in Liverpool and I had the late Jonathan Hewitt who I will remember with huge gratitude for ever.

TheHateIsNotGood · 29/04/2022 00:50

Yes you can is all I can say. Have an unexpected ds20 to prove it.
