Not let husband go car shopping with me

itseasyasABC · 27/04/2022 14:18

So booked in to a car dealer tomorrow to go order myself a new car and husband said he wants to come as he knows more about specs etc BUT I can pick the colour

Iv told him no so we're now arguing as I'm sick of him taking control over things lately and I want to do something for MYSELF

He bought me my first car, he picked it, sorted it, picked my insurance that I pay (expensive with a black box, their was cheaper insurance available without this box mind )

He always takes over things no matter what it is and I'm just fed up of no say?

I just want to get my own first nice car myself?? Iv never been with him when he gets his cars or picks them.

AIBU for not wanting him to come with me ??

@BarbaraofSeville it's my money, it's me who has the kids an gets them to and from school, clubs, appointments an he has no idea how big of a boot space I need weather it be for a pram or wheelchair so he really doesn't have a say I don't think

YANBU tell him you find him to be very controlling and you don't go with him when he picks out his car, so he is being sexist.

He also probably threw in that bit about paying extra just to make you let him go along.

balzamico · 28/04/2022 08:47

There's also the sad fact that if you take your dh car shopping there's a good chance the salesperson will ignore you and sell to him

Labscollie · 28/04/2022 08:52

YANBU. Enjoy having a look around and selecting your car.

JaceLancs · 28/04/2022 08:55

In your circumstances I would refuse him accompanying me
I always buy second hand cars and not always from a dealer so take DP purely because he knows more about faults etc
He still gets no say on manufacturer - model - specification or colour!
As I’m late 50s and make it obvious I’m paying - I rarely get salespeople talking to DP - he usually sets them straight if they try!

IncompleteSenten · 28/04/2022 09:03

How can you say that he always takes over no matter what you say and then try to claim he's not controlling?

You just described controlling!

I ordered my new Yaris in February, I went to the local dealer myself and got a price to P/X my 3yr old, it looked OK and the dealer was very helpful.
It was my money but I showed the deal to OH it was £215 a month, “give me a day,” before you order, he came up with a deal that will cost me £119 a month. Exact same car from a different dealer, that’s a massive difference, he got a big discount off the new car AND £2000 more for the old one.

You should have the car you want if you are paying, but do talk to your partner and listen to any views, men are there to use if you can.

That just shows your partner is more savvy than you, not that men are better at buying cars.

Well he’s certainly more experienced at getting the best deal, as for choosing a car, it’s whatever you fancy that you can afford, taking into account the practicalities of your lifestyle.

If you know what you need and you know your technical specs, or if you need assistance YouTube has various mechanics that give you car information tips, then I'd say go by yourself and hope you get a good car for your needs.

itseasyasABC · 28/04/2022 13:59

Totally agree if it was a second hand car and needed properly checking as I wouldn't have a clue we're to start but it's a brand new car that is to be made and was a set price so safe to say I ordered it and picked the colour al on my own and got it all right!
so he had NOTHING to say!!

So you've already done it then? So did he go with you or not?

Tell him to eff right off! I've been buying my own cars for years & have never had issues. I'm actually going to collect my brand new one tomorrow morning! Go get your own car!! 👍🏼💕

He clearly thinks you're incapable.

Good for you going alone and standing up for yourself.

You're going to have to watch him going forward. I bet he tries to undermine you again. What's your strategy for combating that?
