Cystitis and the feeling of doom

SkaSkaSka · 26/04/2022 17:49

Got another bout of cystitis and I feel genuine, horrible doom. Doom that I will never feel well again and the antibiotics won't work and I'll get the sack for taking even more time off work and everyone will think I'm a massive baby with 0 pain threshold.

Please reassure me that I'm not the only one who can't cope with life when this happens? I've just laid in bed and cried for 2 days. Please send positive recovery stories (I know I will recover but my negative thought cycle is spiralling.)

@SkaSkaSka
The feeling of doom is a well known symptom of a high temperature, which is often a symptom of cystitis! Have you taken anything to bring your temperature down as well as the antibiotics?

SpaghettiNotCourgetti · 26/04/2022 18:05

Cystitis is honestly one of the worst illnesses ever. I felt overall more ill with mastitis, but I would have it again a thousand times if it meant I could avoid cystitis. It is utter, utter misery and I have so much sympathy for you. I lie around and cry when I have it, too, and worry about the antibiotics because I often find I need more than the original prescribed course.

Look after yourself and wallow, and keep an eye on your temperature and for back pain. I hope you feel better soon! Flowers

ChrissyShenkle · 26/04/2022 18:08

Have you tried a preventative low dose of antibiotics daily,? its changed my life

Soultrader · 26/04/2022 18:09

Isn't the feeling of Doom a symptom of sepsis?

SkaSkaSka · 26/04/2022 18:10

@SuffolkBargeWoman I've taken ibuprofen and paracetamol. Got a mega racey heart too which isn't helping the doom.

Woe! Woe is me! Thank you for the well wishes @SpaghettiNotCourgetti

You are probably in no mood for "have you tried..." But Manose D? You can take it daily as a preventative measure. You have my utmost sympathy, and yes you know it will pass but by God it's awful.

SkaSkaSka · 26/04/2022 18:13

@ChrissyShenkle sorry I should have said in my OP, I've been on a low dose trimethprim for about 2 years after a cystoscopy. The GP cruelly took them off me to "see how I go" (rage) and this has been the result - 3 lots in 5 months. I want low dose nitro as that seems to really work.

Feels very much like a "women's problem" which is massively dismissed.

Can totally recommend D Manoose... a supplement recommended by a physio I was referred to. Order from Amazon and I haven't had a bout in over a year.

ChrissyShenkle · 26/04/2022 18:20

I'd be demanding it, you know it works, don't take no for an answer

Yes this is what I meant! Must Google check more...

Clovacloud · 26/04/2022 18:24

I don’t mean to scare you but the whole ‘doom’ feeling can be sepsis. Both my MIL and DD have had sepsis from UTI’s and ended up in hospital. If you have a racing heart and a temperature maybe you should call 111? You might need to get checked out?

SkaSkaSka · 26/04/2022 18:24

OK talk to me about dmannose please. 1000mg? I used to take cranberry tablets and they helped a tiny bit but is dmannose going to save my life?

OP posts:
SkaSkaSka · 26/04/2022 18:25

Hi @Clovacloud thank you for thinking of me but I don't think I've got a temp. Just horrible racing heart if I attempt to do anything at all. It was 135bmp earlier ffs

OP posts:
NrlySp · 26/04/2022 18:26

D mannose is the first line of defense in Europe. I can’t understand why it isn’t used more in the Uk. It’s a powder. You can get it from independent health food stores.
currently also have a uti. It’s so awful.

Clovacloud · 26/04/2022 18:29

That’s quite high, maybe give them a call anyway? If nothing else you might get a second opinion from an out of hours GP. It’s awful your GP took away your low daily dose.

I’m so paranoid about UTI’s now, DD was very touch and go by the time we made it A&E as she’d had no symptoms other than a temperature and racing heart.

I really hope you feel better soon.

Totheweekend · 26/04/2022 18:31

D-mannose !!
Buy the powder rather than the tablets as they are vile.

SkaSkaSka · 26/04/2022 18:33

@NrlySp noooooooooooooooooooooo not you as well! I wish you all the very best and wish you a really speedy recovery.

@Clovacloud I got antibiotics from the nurse practitioner yesterday and my heart rate was even higher and she just said "ooh that's ticking on isnt it." My temp was normal then but was mega sweaty overnight.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 26/04/2022 18:37

I nearly died of sepsis after reoccurring cystitis, but that did lead to finally getting ongoing repeat prescription for nitro. I was taking d mannose as well at the time, and I thought it was helping as it took away the pain, but actually I think it let the infection get into my kidneys without me realising, hence the sepsis. So be careful with it.

For me it was absolutely correlated to sex, so a nitro pill after or before sex and no more cystitis. If you are similar see if you can get your GP to agree to that. You must be careful with nitro as long term regular use causes nerve damage, which is why only taking it when you know it will make a difference is important.

ChrissyShenkle · 26/04/2022 18:41

Bicarbonate of soda helps too, tastes vile though

ChrissyShenkle · 26/04/2022 18:42

Also...no idea how old you are but it can be related to the menopause, I also got prescribed oestrogen pessaries

MangyInseam · 26/04/2022 18:46

You have my sympathies, OP. I cope with massive amounts of water and ibuprofen.

I spent some time researching it, it really seems to be one of those things where they don't have a good idea why some people have such issues. For me it seems to be when I get busy and don't drink enough.

SkaSkaSka · 26/04/2022 18:47

@Ohsugarhoneyicetea it has always been sex related so I just took the nitro after sex, but the GP said that was wrong too. Fucks sakes. I'll keep that in mind about the dmannose thank you.

@ChrissyShenkle that thought had also crossed my mind. I'm only 41 but verrrrry sweaty at night, don't sleep, can't think, spotty for the first time since my teens, have a sex drive for 4 days of the month...

What a joy it is to be a woman! #blessed

I used to get this a lot and best way I found of getting rid of it was to flush it out. Drink a pint of water, and, as soon as you feel able, another full pint. then keep sipping on water the rest of the day. I know this is the last thing you'll feel like doing because peeing is such pain when you're like this - but it does work. Clears it up fairly quickly. I tried this when i read an article explaining that when you take antibiotics for cystitis it actually kills off the 'good' bacteria as well as bad and can lead to recurring bouts of it. Another tip was to never put anything scented in your bath (like bubble bath) and to always wear pure cotton pants. I've stuck to both of these even though it's years since I had it. My sympathy OP, I well remember the horrible pain

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/04/2022 19:06

Cystitis is horrendous. I dread getting it. Last time I had it it took just a few hours for blood to appear in my urine and I was crying in pain. Huge OP

No advice on the immediate problem, but I’m also 41 and I’ve been on hrt for months, had many of the symptoms you mention but also extreme anxiety, low flat mood and erm a sense of doom that creeps up out of nowhere. Definitely keep an eye on it and get help if needed, I waited far too long.

hope you feel better soon.
