Cystitis and the feeling of doom

Got another bout of cystitis and I feel genuine, horrible doom. Doom that I will never feel well again and the antibiotics won't work and I'll get the sack for taking even more time off work and everyone will think I'm a massive baby with 0 pain threshold.

Please reassure me that I'm not the only one who can't cope with life when this happens? I've just laid in bed and cried for 2 days. Please send positive recovery stories (I know I will recover but my negative thought cycle is spiralling.)

@GlasswareisOverated it's says a spoon full in a glass of water every 2 to 3 hours so I'll go with that.

@Cheesechips birthing my 10 pound 1 ounce baby was easier than this shit show.

Haven't given birth naturally but give me another c section rather than cystitis any day Grin

Assuming most of you aren't old enough to know about the old timely cystitis guru Angela Kilmartin - she was an opera singer who had to give it up when she married and got frequent UTIs. She made it her mission to understand the cause and how to prevent and stop cystitis. Basically - wash your bum with soap and water after a poo (fairly intrusively) making sure all the soapy water goes backwards away from your vulva. Drink water before sex, wee and wash with cool water sex after every time. First twinges, a pint of water with a teaspoon of bicarb on the hour did three hours after. These things do work. I've also heard good things about D Mannose.

Also - if you're peri or menopausal it could be Genito urinary syndrome if menopause for which there is local HRT. In some women like me thrush manifests as the feeling of a UTI as well.

However OP it sounds like you should be back on the low dose ABs. Gentle hugs - I had almost permanent cystitis for well over a decade and there is no worse feeling. Doom indeed.

Thanks so much everyone who has taken the time to comment, I really appreciate it. I got dressed this afternoon and dried my hair what a success! Felt like I had run a marathon after but still, feels like progress.

Racey heart still v uncomfortable so the infection is still clearly doing something but hopefully it's on its way out!

That’s good news @SkaSkaSka ! Hopefully the things like D Mannose or other suggestions will also help for preventative measurements in the future as well. I recall taking that stuff for the first time during the bout that nearly landed me in hospital and it helping, but it’s been much more effective at prevention before anything gets to the antibiotics stage. So i’d advise to keep trying it, take some each time you have sex to start off with as well. Hope this sorts it for you.

SkaSkaSka · 29/04/2022 09:18

Thanks so much @PriestessofPing that's exactly what I plan on doing. I already follow all the other Many Rules of Cystitis so I'll add this one in!

I was researching health anxiety yesterday because I genuinely do feel so frightened of being ill again but is it health anxiety if it does keep bloody happening?!

Aaaaaaand it's back! (It's the OP on another username god knows what went on with the old one.) Has 2 weeks where I felt brilliant and now - evil evil feeling of evilness is back. I am so fucking fed up!!

So got more nitro, and the Nurse Practitioner suggested a referral to urology if I get it again. I asked if it could be peri menopause and she said because I'm not 45 or over they have to check with a blood test rather than treat symptoms.

She did suggest hiprex do other people get it on prescription?

Fucked. Off.

NrlySp · 23/05/2022 20:31

Has your blood been taken to test for infection? They should do that and antibiotics prescribed. So sorry. I know what it’s like

70kid · 23/05/2022 21:07

@SkaSkaSka
if you know what your doctor gave you previously just order some online
Dr Fox
pharmacia
superdrug
health express and all the other online pharmacies will let you order

They all do cystitis antibiotics cost between £12 - £20 for a course of 6 tablets that gets rid of it .

I get it maybe once a year but I keep a supply of them that I can use in an emergency as I am not waiting to go and see my doctor when I can’t even get off the fucking toilet

7eleven · 23/05/2022 22:36

Hiprex is working very well for me, OP

7eleven · 23/05/2022 22:38

I get it on prescription. I’m also having 6 months of bladder installations at the hospital. I only got proper help when I was seen by the bowel and bladder team at the hospital.

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 24/05/2022 07:58

I hope that is working well for you @7eleven I might push for a referral. In good news I've lost nearly a stone through feeling so shite! I would much rather still be a bit podgy though.
