Settle a debate! Brush before/after breakfast???

I always brush my teeth right when I wake up (before having tea, breakfast, etc.) as my mouth feels grubby.

DH is a strictly after breakfast brusher. Even when we're at a hotel/resort. He'll go back to the room to brush after coming down for breakfast.

Came up as Which? magazine has an article this issue and seems to be indifferent. So really this is just a curiosity question.

YABU - Deffo brush after breakfast!
YANBU - Pre-breakfast brush is a must!

I've started doing them before breakfast as I read this is better , but after dinner I tend to also brush and floss them too
( I do have gum disease and want to try and save my teeth as much as possible though. )

Mumsnut · 25/04/2022 17:08

Both

smittenkittennn · 25/04/2022 17:09

Nooooo I’ve always been told not to brush until 30 mins after eating because of the acid on food weakening your enamel so it’s a first thing and last thing for me.

Maydaysoonenough · 25/04/2022 17:11

First thing before breakfast.. At 50 I only have 2 fillings
.

Clicheinaqashqai · 25/04/2022 17:13

First thing during the week, after breakfast at the weekend usually. I brush them after getting out the shower so depends if it's a lazy morning or not.

After breakfast. I'm 32 and have no fillings.

After breakfast & coffee. There’s no point brushing and then immediately eating/drinking as it washes away the fluoride from your toothpaste that you really need to sit on your clean teeth to prevent decay.

dudsville · 25/04/2022 17:18

I couldn't have voted anyway as even "both" doesn't cut it for me. I start the day with a coffee or tea, then brush, then later I eat and really I just then intersperse a light brush here and there throughout the day. They're quick, light brushings, 30 seconds, just makes me feel fresh.

Trivester · 25/04/2022 17:23

Brushing after eating does damage to enamel because of acid levels in mouth. Before is better.

KittenKong · 25/04/2022 17:24

Dentists in the family - before!

IcyPenguin101 · 25/04/2022 17:24

An ex’s father was a dentist - he was adamant you should brush before breakfast.

Sandsnake · 25/04/2022 17:26

Both for me. Mouth always feels grim when I wake so do it then. And then again usually 30 minutes or so after breakfast. The first one is usually just a 30 second job, though - the one after breakfast is the ‘proper’ one.

Yep. Either brush before or wait at least 30 mins or you end up brushing the enamel off.

TeacupDrama · 25/04/2022 17:29

as a retired dentist, the most important brush is before bed as saliva flow drops dramatically in the night while we sleep so anything on teeth at bedtime lacks normal washing effect of saliva, one proper brush of 2 minutes is much better than 3-4 brushes of 30 seconds as the same places tend to be missed everytime.
if you have acidic drinks and brush immediately it is not good for the enamel however if you have orange juice with your morning toast the toast nneutralises the acid so you can brush straight after breakfast,
you should avoid brushing directly after acidic or fizzy drinks
I get that brushing before breakfast makes your breathe better also some people wake with a very dry mouth but the main function of brushing is to get rid of plaque to prevent dental disease
90% of people that say they brush twice a day don't and yes the dentist CAN TELL!
I would rather someone did it thoroughly once a day at night than a quick brush several times for most people an electric brush used properly is the best

Isonthecase · 25/04/2022 17:31

Also a before brusher because multiple dentists have told me that food and juice especially weakens the enamel. I usually swoosh with a bit of water after though to wash off any residue.

Carrotten · 25/04/2022 17:32

Doesn't really matter either before eating or 30 minutes after. Whichever you prefer.

Personally on work days I brush before but weekends when I've got time I would do after

Pugfostermum · 25/04/2022 17:34

The other month the dentist told me to brush before breakfast, as the acid in the food more readily damages teeth if your mouth hasn’t been brushed since the night.

Luckyelephant1 · 25/04/2022 17:35

Dentist here. Before breakfast is best but if you do it after wait at least 30 mins after eating.

But the most important time to brush is before bed, and obviously don't eat or drink anything (except water) after that.

Angelou79 · 25/04/2022 17:36

When I wake up and quick brush before I go out. 43 and no fillings

gamerchick · 25/04/2022 17:37

Enamel is at risk after eating. So no. Before is better.

Carrotten · 25/04/2022 17:38

I agree that lots of quick brushes just means you will likely miss areas, it's more important to ensure that you remove all the plaque once a day than do a few half hearted brushes throughout the day because you cannot thoroughly remove all the plaque in 30 seconds

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 25/04/2022 17:39

We were advised by dentisit to brush before breakfast.

MustBeThursday · 25/04/2022 17:47

After breakfast (with a gap between) unless I'm in a hotel or similar where I'm eating breakfast in a restaurant setting. In which case I brush before I go down but would probably swill with mouthwash after eating.

PolitePlantPot · 25/04/2022 17:47

Dentist always told me to brush before breakfast, so that's what I do (she said brushing immediately after food is bad)
