To think Prosecco is better than Cava?

Springtime45 · 25/04/2022 10:43

I know nothing about wine but want to offer my weekending AirBNB guests some fizz and brownies as a welcome gesture.

What do you think?

YABU- Cava is better

YANBU- Prosecco is better

I'll offer orange juice to non-drinkers.

for airb&b I think either is fine but generally, I prefer cava to prosecco

i think the market has become so saturated with Prosecco that there are so many cheap versions now which are way too sweet and not very nice

Ifitistobesaid · 25/04/2022 10:45

I find Prosecco a bit sickly. Cremant is better than both but a little bit more expensive.

CounsellorTroi · 25/04/2022 10:46

Out of those two I’d prefer Prosecco but there are other fizzes. Cremant de Loire is lovely.

Beefcurtains79 · 25/04/2022 10:47

Cava is way nicer than Prosecco, Prosecco tastes so sweet and cheap.

Dartmoorcheffy · 25/04/2022 10:48

Be very careful. You need an alcohol licence to do this.

RandomQuest · 25/04/2022 10:48

There’s no hard and fast rule because there’s no universal Prosecco or Cava. Some bottles of Cava are I’m sure better than some types of Prosecco! But you’re not providing a wine tasting, it’s a gesture for your guests, so I’d definitely go Prosecco because people can be weirdly snobby about Cava.

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 25/04/2022 10:49

Try a Cremant. A French sparkling wine made in the same way as champagne but not from the champagne region. It's a similar price point to cava/prosecco and IMO much nicer than either of them. I

Although @Pyri has a good point about lots of Proseccos being quite sweet which might be better suited to brownies than a drier wine

MagicMatilda · 25/04/2022 10:51

I haven’t heard anyone speak/have cava for ages! I used to love it before Prosecco took over. I actually would say cava would be nicer

DarkCorner · 25/04/2022 10:53

I prefer cava (but very happily drink either!) but think Prosecco is more of a crowd pleaser.

Purplepalm192 · 25/04/2022 10:53

I think Cava is much nicer, but Prosecco more trendy so guests may prefer it

NightmareSlashDelightful · 25/04/2022 10:54

English sparkling wine maybe? Chapel Down, Nyetimber, that kind of thing.

I'm a champagne or don't bother person myself but I appreciate that most people would be quite happy with a bottle of something fizzy.

10HailMarys · 25/04/2022 10:59

It's not really a case of one being better than the other. There are good Proseccos and shit Proseccos, and there are good Cavas and shit Cavas. I would say Cremant is more reliable, but there might less choice.

Are you leaving it in the property for them as part of a welcome pack, or are you actually serving it to them in glasses when they arrive? If it's the latter, I probably wouldn't serve a dry wine to accompany something sweet like brownies. If you're just leaving them a nice welcome gift to consume at their leisure, though, I suspect they'll be delighted with anything given that it's a freebie!

Sainsburys cremant

end of thread

I think that's if you sell it, not give it away.

When we moved we left a bottle of Champagne for the new people and, so far, the police haven't been round charge us, and they've had more than 10 years to do that. Phew I think we've got away with it!

LampLighter414 · 25/04/2022 11:11

Lambrini for me!

Letsbekindplease · 25/04/2022 11:12

Remember the dust you could add to Prosecco and the fruit balls to make it shimmery and fruity. Gag!!!
More always been a Prosecco fan but
having hardly drank it for 2 years, I have enjoyed not having the hangover from it. I always feel like death after Prosecco.

For a hideous moment I thought you were recommending these!

FinnRussell · 25/04/2022 11:30

More people might be pleased to be left Prosecco I think. They'd be wrong though because cava is much nicer

WhatIsThisPlease · 25/04/2022 11:36

Difficult to say, it's down to personal preference.

Most people here are saying cava but I prefer Prosecco 🤷‍♀️

MadameFantabulosa · 25/04/2022 11:37

Cava or Cremant. I’ve never had a good Prosecco. Cava and Cremant are made the same way as Champagne, but Prosecco is just cheap wine with fizz added after.

But this thread, and MN in general, seems to indicate that people are more weirdly snobby about prosecco.

I think cava is supposed to be 'better' because it's made by the same method as champagne, whereas prosecco (I think) isn't bottled until after it's second fermentation, but tbh, I can't tell a great deal of difference. As it happens I had some Morrisons 'The Best' prosecco over the weekend and that was very nice.

But I generally go for cava because I like all things Spanish, but that's just me and I'd never turn my nose up at any type of fizz, whether it is £5 Aldi prosecco or vintage champagne.

If you want it to be a nice treat and more acceptable to those who like to think they're more discerning, I'd spend a bit more than the minimum, eg £8 a bottle, but look out for offers, like you can often get 25% off if you buy 6 bottles, that sort of deal.

But in terms of whether cava or prosecco would be preferred, you're literally flipping a coin, but I agree with a pp that a Cremant, being fizzy wine made in France but not in the Champagne region, is generally more highly regarded than either.

Geamhradh · 25/04/2022 11:43

I've not drunk Cava for years (living in Italy being the main reason)
One of the reasons I'm not keen on Prosecco is that the good stuff is very dry. (the clue lies in the name!) If you look for Brut on the label it will be more dry.

Sparkletastic · 25/04/2022 11:43

Cremant is top tier cheap fizz, cava is in second, Prosecco third.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 25/04/2022 11:44

No. Prosecco is second rate. Possibly third.

Are you near any local gourmet places? I’d probably prefer the chance to sample something local, whether it is wine or cheese etc. And you might find that you can get samples or discounts from local producers if you contact them directly and explain your purpose.

Geamhradh · 25/04/2022 11:44

There's a fabulous red fizzy wine whose name I can't remember that would be my choice of fizzy wines. Begins with a B.
