To still go on holiday without a passport?

PoirotAndHisMoustache · 22/04/2022 17:44

i probably am, but it did seem like a good idea at one point.
i am one of the people affected by the Passport Office shambles. Due to fly to an EU country.
i am dual citizen - EU country and British. Passport Office has both of my passports. I still have my national ID.
i will be allowed in the EU country using the ID. I am guessing i am not allowed back to Britain using the ID as i am never applied for settlement scheme - as already British citizen.
i could apply for emergency travel document to be issued while i am abroad to come back to the UK. Cost £100 and takes 48 hours apparently
is it completely bonkers? Would you just lose the holiday or do this?

Well, you persuaded me with your post. If it’s that easy, do it!

dementedpixie · 22/04/2022 17:48

When is the holiday and how long have they had your passports?

Minfilia · 22/04/2022 17:56

You’d have to check whether the airline will still allow you to travel, I guess - I would imagine they wouldn’t allow you to leave without a passport if you potentially couldn’t get back in!

Is there no chance of rearranging the holiday and paying an admin fee?

RaspberryChouxBuns · 22/04/2022 17:58

I'm not sure you can travel on an identity card anymore but I stand to be corrected! It's the getting back in that might be a challenge, I have no idea how long emergency travel docs take!

BuanoKubiamVej · 22/04/2022 17:59

Is there any chance it will arrive while you are away? Could someone keep an eye on the post and arrange for it to be couriered to you when it arrives?

dementedpixie · 22/04/2022 17:48

When is the holiday and how long have they had your passports?

Holiday is next Friday and it will be 9 weeks by then. I know I should have done it earlier but i the time they were saying it takes 6 weeks.
my passport was fine. Still valid for another 8 years or so. I just wanted to change the name on the passport after I got married. But it turned out i should have changed my foreign passport first - but there was no mentioned of this anywhere until they received mu documents.
i requested documents back, but it’s been almost a month now and apparently it will take another couple of weeks as they are busy (that’s what they told me).

No, I cannot rearrange.
i am fairly certain i am allowed to leave the UK using my ID.
people who have settles status can use it to get back in until 2025.
i don’t have settled status though, as didn’t need it

I would still go if you can.

LetitiaLeghorn · 22/04/2022 18:16

I think that was risky, even in normal times, to send away a passport just before a holiday just for a name change! But I think you can still get back in on an EU identity card so you should be fine.

LetitiaLeghorn · 22/04/2022 18:19

Oops, sorry. No I take it back. You have to have applied to be on the settlement scheme.

BobblyBlueJumper · 22/04/2022 18:23

I'd be really wary of not having a British travel document. You might be able to leave but I dunno about getting back in!

Also it depends if you can fly without a passport, the airline might stipulate that a passport is necessary so that would be the first thing to check.

I hope your new passport arrives before your flight!

BeanCalledPickle · 22/04/2022 18:24

On the emergency passport front it depends where you are in relation to the embassy. I lost mine in Majorca so had to hang out in palma but if I’d been on another island I would have had to fly to Palma. Also I think it has the effect of cancelling your existing passport as I had to reapply when home.

PoirotAndHisMoustache · 22/04/2022 18:28

@BobblyBlueJumper according to European Commission website, airline cannot discriminate against people who don’t have a passport.

@BeanCalledPickle i will be about half an hour bus away

whatwasIgoingtosay · 22/04/2022 18:29

I think you'd be crazy to travel without a passport - it could all go so very badly wrong, even if the airline let you board the plane out of the UK (unlikely).

HermioneWeasley · 22/04/2022 18:29

Do you want to be able to get back in? Because from what you’ve said you won’t be able to.

PoirotAndHisMoustache · 22/04/2022 18:34

@HermioneWeasley i do. That’s why i said about getting emergency travel document to come back in. I don’t care about my current passport getting cancelled. It was being updated to new name anyway.
If i can’t get back, well i would just go back to my home country until I can.

OP posts:
PoirotAndHisMoustache · 22/04/2022 18:36

But then i am not too fussed if i miss out on this holiday either.
it’s more about principle, i am very frustrated with what passport office is getting away with

LetitiaLeghorn · 22/04/2022 18:39

I just looked on the govt website and it seems perfectly legitimate to apply for an emergency travel document if you're abroad and your passport is at the passport office. So I'd say go for it.

Eligibility
You can apply for an emergency travel document if all the following apply:

  • you’re a British national
  • you’re outside the UK
- your passport has been lost, stolen, damaged, is full, has recently expired or is with HM Passport Office or a foreign embassy you do not have time to renew or replace your passport before you travel
  • you can provide proof of your travel plans, for example booking confirmations (or detailed written travel plans if you cannot book ahead)
PoirotAndHisMoustache · 22/04/2022 18:46

@LetitiaLeghorn that’s what i read, hence the whole idea 🙂

Well admittedly it was 20 odd years ago but I went to France with an out of date passport as ID. Customs at Dover clocked it immediately (it was an old blue one years after they’d all gone red) and said they’d let me out but France might not let me in. France we’re happy to let me in and the U.K. let me back. We were all in the EU then though. I’d try it, you’ve nothing to lose.

QuebecBagnet · 22/04/2022 18:49

Are you a British national or a British citizen? I’m assuming there’s a difference.

PsychoSyd · 22/04/2022 18:56

The airline will let you board the plane coming home. When you land, go to a manned desk instead of the E gates. Explain to the border force officer the situation with your passports. Emphasise that you hold dual nationality and are a British citizen. Ask them to look you up on the passport database to confirm this.

You will experience a delay while they do this, and expect them to be very unimpressed, but if you really want to go on holiday, then this is the best course of action.

LetitiaLeghorn · 22/04/2022 18:57

@PoirotAndHisMoustache Obviously it's meant for people living abroad but it doesn't define it as only for them. And they can't refuse you entry back into your home country. It might take some time out of your holiday, but if you're not bothered by that, why not give it a go? I'd ring the airline first and check they're OK with you flying with an ID card out of a non EU country. Then just do it.

PoirotAndHisMoustache · 22/04/2022 19:02

@QuebecBagnet i am British Citizen
@LetitiaLeghorn i will do. Although i am just reading FAQs on European Commission guidance and it says that they have to as long as it accepted in the destination country.

PoirotAndHisMoustache · 22/04/2022 19:03

@PsychoSyd thank you. I considered doing this. I have my passport number. And i have my naturalisation document.
