To wonder if M&S uniform is worth it?

BabyofMine · 22/04/2022 09:07

Just priced up for what my child needs, worked out as £130ish from M&S, and £66 from Asda George.
However if the Asda falls apart after a few months and we buy twice it will end up the same cost. But maybe it’s hard wearing?
I really don’t have any family with kids or any friends with school aged kids to ask!

YABU - Asda (or other supermarkets) are just as good
YANBU - M&S Uniform is worth the cost

Have got m & s polo shirts - mainly due to having a very slim boy, aneither slim fit polo shirts hang better on him. Usually last a year at least (get 6, so new one each day and have a spare). Have also has asda and sainsburys for younger ds, and they wash well too. Tend to get new in sep as summer term they suncream each day, and can't seem to get this out of the collar (even though line dry where possible). My two are quite good at not getting too messy though (ie board marker etc), and haven't lost any yet).
Mainly based m & s trousers too (again for slim fit). They are good, but seem to be slightly thinner than sainsburys. As live more rural now, had to get thermal trousers for the winter as the wind bites more as more exposed.
M & S do tend to have a safe on for 20% off school uniform- think in June sometime- so have tended to buy then, but does sell quickly.
Also worth checking what multipack sizes things come in - some polos are in 2, or 3, or 5.

Asda and Sainsbury’s have been brilliant for DC throughout. As PPs said, they knack them /grow out of them before they wear out. Save the difference for good shoes
which they also knack and grow out of!

AnneShirleysNewDress · 22/04/2022 09:39

Asda for polo shirts and M&S for skirts and trousers as they fit DD better and still look good as new.

champagneplanet · 22/04/2022 09:40

I started out buying M&S with DD1, realised after a while that George is just as good. It washes and irons fine and DD2 is currently wearing DD1s old George summer dresses.

I've also had shoes from George (I refuse to pay out when they are between sizes or it's coming to end the school year) and they have been equally as good as anything they've had from anywhere else. (They don't walk to school though so they don't get heavy wear).

My DCs are quite a slim build and the George slim fit polo tops were a nice fit in them too so that was an extra bonus.

£130 seems a lot. What are you buying? You don't need 5 sets of everything.

Yes, it was for five pinafores, six polos and six cardigans.
I’m anxious about getting uniform dry as we haven’t a drier which is why I wanted enough sets that I don’t have to worry about drying time.

M&S do better quality socks, trousers and tights. Everything else is fine from Asda or sainsburys. Polo shirts for example are definitely fine from supermarkets, I’ve also found skirts and dresses are too. Prefer sainsburys to Asda personally.

SparkyBlue · 22/04/2022 09:44

I love the M&S trousers for my son they are definitely an amazing shape and great quality. The only thing I found is that the girls clothes were small fitting as my daughters skirt was like a micro mini after a few weeks and she didn't have a growth spurt so they must have shrunk in the dryer.

JurasicPerks · 22/04/2022 09:47

M&S for trousers in a cut with an adjustable waist that fits my skinny kids.
Then we discovered slim fit polos, so m&s for them too.
I'd buy to fit your child.

Peppapig7262662 · 22/04/2022 09:47

Agree with PP, M&S colour fades really quickly.

Have to buy my teen DD jumpers from there as its the only place i can get her size colour etc. They look shite after one wash.

I'd go with Asda, Tesco etc.

JurasicPerks · 22/04/2022 09:48

PS you dont need 6 cardis

Peppapig7262662 · 22/04/2022 09:49

You don't need 6 cardigans!
Honestly 2 or 3 will do and a clean polo for each day.
Cardigans can just be spot cleaned if needed.
Don't bother with pinafores just skirt/trousers, much less of a faff about.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 22/04/2022 09:51

It took me many years of parenting to discover. Only have 1 cardi. Might be just mine but when they only had 1, they made sure they found it by the end of the day!

crackingreward · 22/04/2022 09:54

I prefer M&S for shirts, ASDA shirts don't wash well over time and the collars go soft and wonky.

Desert76 · 22/04/2022 09:55

M&S used to be much better, but since about 5 years ago I feel there is less difference. I have some second hand m&s cardigans that are so thick and sturdy. But the newer ones are flimsy and look like rags after washing.

I personally think Sainsbury’s offer the best quality for a lower price. Their cotton summer dresses are particularly good.

I like M&S longer/taller range for trousers and skirts, if your child is tall and slim they are definitely worth it. But if they are average size probably not.

Coldnoseandtoes · 22/04/2022 09:56

I've tried both and slightly prefer M&S. Both kids' schools require button up shirts, and I found the Asda ones are a bit too thin for my liking. M&S ones are thicker, and wash and iron better, IMO. I also prefer their cardigans, but not keen on their pullovers. I've yet to find a black v neck pullover that doesnt go washed out after a few wears. Trousers are much the same now that DS is older. I prefer the style of M&S skirts, but I have also bought girls Jersey trousers from Asda and liked those for winter.

Since when does school uniform fall apart? Never happened for me

It took me many years of parenting to discover. Only have 1 cardi. Might be just mine but when they only had 1, they made sure they found it by the end of the day!

My daughter sometimes forgets to bring her coat or lunchbox home. Cardigan wouldn't stand a chance...

stopringingme · 22/04/2022 09:57

M&S usually do 20% off uniform around June so maybe wait a little while.

I find M&S the best fitting.
Asda comes up small and I have found the quality poor.
I did buy some trousers from Sainsbury's but again they fitted but will not last as long as previous ones bought from M&S.
Next is pretty good as is John Lewis.
I always buy 6 of everything so we have one for each day and one set spare.

TeenPlusCat · 22/04/2022 09:57

Little children don't get sweaty so only the top layer needs to be clean, and unless they are a messy eater even that doesn't need washing every day.

Scanner20 · 22/04/2022 09:59

We have found sainsburys polos good but the knitwear faded quickly. M&S I've found to be good for cardigans and their skirts and pinafores have washed well.
Next we had a pinafore and that faded.
Asda I had polos from and the more I washed them I found pink bleach stains on them.

This year I'm going between m&s and Sainsbury's. Can't comment on other supermarkets. I have ordered my ds some pull on trousers from next as he won't be able to do the zip!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/04/2022 10:01

Asda and M&S are equally good, but before you buy loads it is worth finding out which brand fits your DC best. M&S tend to be more "generous" sizes, so my DS can't wear their trousers without holding them up. ASDA trousers are tighter on the waist for the same length, and fit him perfectly.

Hankunamatata · 22/04/2022 10:01

I buy school trousers from m & s purely because they hold their creases after being tumbled dried and dont need ironing. However sainsburys and Tesco's have been just as hard wearing but they need to be ironed.

DS started reception in Asda trousers and had holes in the knees by October half term.

I’ve bought him and dd mostly Next ever since. Size up in the trousers, take the up, they’ve lasted ds two years, accommodated a lot of growth and then dd has worn them the same, still looking ok. Their white polo shirts have washed/worn/bern bleached countless times, abs have all also done two children and been passed on.

Obviously, there is no accounting for white board markers, massive trips in the playground and huge growth spurts, but Next sell the most robust uniform I’ve come across (DS is in Y8 now, I’ve bought a lot of uniform in the last 10 years). I’ll economise more on shorts though, as they are worn far less, and can’t go through at the knees.

My boys all wore Next uniform too. Literally bought it all in September and they were still wearing it in July when they broke up, albeit skin tight and with ankle on display by then! But perfectly intact and even able to hand on to a smaller child. Next trousers and shorts are completely indestructable!
Next is also great for tall skinny boys as they are quite narrow legged and have the adjustable waist mechanism thing right up to age 16.

Hankunamatata · 22/04/2022 10:02

I also buy m&s as can buy smaller age size but with extra long legs for my skinny dc.

Maflingo · 22/04/2022 10:03

M&S for trousers/skirts (pref when they do 20% off) - all of dds have been passed on to other families. Apart from the soft jersey material trousers - they lasted one wear!!!

sainsburys/next for polo shirts/PE kit - they end up in the bin due to stain or wearing through but look the best after washing until then!

cant comment on shirts/blouses as DD has not needed those yet!
