To be genuinely sad about the MN format changes?

Sarahcoggles · 20/04/2022 22:42

I’ve been on MN for nearly 17 years. I tend to read it in bed on my iPad. It’s relaxing at the end of the day. I also glance at it while cooking etc.

The new format doesn’t work on my iPad (it’s 6 years old) - it keeps crashing, as does the app. I can’t afford to buy a new iPad. I’m on the PC now, but I can’t read that in bed. My phone is too small to read MN.

So that’s it - the end of an era, until I can afford a new iPad. It makes me quite sad.

I gave up on the app a long time ago. On my phone (Samsung) I look at MN Web version. It's working fine for me. Looks better than what I'm seeing on my laptop. I imagine most people nowadays MN on a phone so maybe it's optimised for that.

ShowOfHands · 21/04/2022 09:24

www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/694945-A-few-notes-on-the-new-look-and-functions

It's changed before. It always comes with glitches. Just wait a bit. It won't necessarily continue to be an issue.

milkyaqua · 21/04/2022 09:35

The one thing the site really needed was an edit feature. A brief opportunity to correct annoying typos or phone-inspired glitches.

Instead, malfunctions galore, glaring white space, childish look, vanished watchlist histories, and no edit feature.

milkyaqua · 21/04/2022 09:36

An awful lot of people MN from work, where they use a desktop. It is a stunning oversight to not design a modern website with both in mind.

Snowflakes1122 · 21/04/2022 09:40

YANBU. Looks awful on my iPhone. My phone is only a few months old, so not out of date.

Memyselfandfood · 21/04/2022 09:40

Its awful. It keeps crashing.
it keeps asking me to sign in every time i come to the site.
it keeps asking me about cookies ( even though they said it wouldn’t)
Its hard to read
it doesn't show which threads I've now read as they’re ALL bold
it still puts ALL threads i’ve commented on in threads ‘i’m watching’ so that’s a complete waste of time

NewName9273 · 21/04/2022 10:22

Kinneddar · 20/04/2022 22:43

No YANBU to feel thar way

YABU to start yet another thread to add to the 20000 already running

I dont think this is very fair. Unless i am searching in AIBU/Site stuff i can see any threads newer that 2020! for all OP knows no threads have been started on the topic.

The new site is a shower of shit and obviously they are having tech issues

Believeitornot · 21/04/2022 10:25

I’m the most annoyed at MN losing my login and history details FFS
it was fine yesterday?!

There is an edit feature, but it’s for Premium members only.

Akire · 21/04/2022 10:30

I don’t like it. I already had larger font on my phone so now everything in bold you can’t read as takes up to much space. I’ve had go to 50% size to read headings. It’s like SHOUTING REALLY LOUDLT ON EVERY NAME AND HEADING

Far to much brain ache to be relaxing which is a great shame.

PegasusReturns · 21/04/2022 10:31

It’s rubbish.

Primarily because the multi level quotes make threads painfully long and repetitive.

I also hate that “active” hasn’t updated and I can’t be bothered to go searching for things to read.

milkyaqua · 21/04/2022 11:10

There is an edit feature, but it’s for Premium members only.

When this was raised in the last 24 hours, mnhq said they would look into adding it. Odd how hard it is, given it is an existing feature?

AryaStarkWolf · 21/04/2022 11:13

When I go to see what new posts are in threads I've posted in it brings me back to the start of the thread instead of to the newest posts which is really annoying

StrangeCondition · 21/04/2022 11:19

Not a big fan and I noticed this morning that the threads in the trending bit don't appear to be actually trending on the boards

carefullycourageous · 21/04/2022 11:22

It has significantly reduced my enjoyment of the site, so IMO YANBU

TheNewUpdateIsShit · 21/04/2022 11:37

Oh so we can have the edit button after asking for the last 10 years but only if we pay? I see.

to the pp who said the app was fine, I assume you haven’t tried bookmarking anything? Also half the smilies have disappeared and the ones that are still there are pixelated and weirdly distorted. The trending subjects are from months ago, loads of zombie threads resurrected.

starting new paragraphs too will not capitalise the first letter. Ho hum.

Zotter · 21/04/2022 15:41

worraliberty · 21/04/2022 00:12

but I’m disappointed that the see all function so you can see all comments on one page and how I like to view a thread is now only available if you pay to be a premium member.

That's not the case for me although I'm using a laptop, so not sure if that's the difference?

The 'see all' part that tells me is only available to Premium members, is the bit where you click to see all of a certain MNetter's posts.

Thanks @worraliberty. Apologies I used the wrong term when I referred to not being able to use the ‘See all’ feature. I realise the ‘See All’ feature refers to when you can see all the posts of one poster in one thread. As you say that is still available to all. The feature I can no longer see as being available is to see all the posts of one thread on one continuous page that you just continuously scroll down until the end. I now am not sure what they called it as I wrongly thought it was the ‘see all’ button. Perhaps ‘see all on one page’? If you or anyone else understand what up I am referring to and I have missed it is still available, I would love to know. Many thanks.

Zotter · 21/04/2022 15:43

Ps correction to my above comment. To clarify I know the ‘see all’ feature for the OPs posts on a thread is still available to all. I think the ‘see all’ available under each persons post can now be used if you are Premier member for each poster on a thread. Hope I am making sense!

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 21/04/2022 15:45

I don't like it either, I find it harder to read and it's weird having the op at the the top of the page.
I can see why they've done some of the changes but it's not for me.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 21/04/2022 15:46

I'm used to 'updates' and usually patient with them but agree with you OP.

My old iphone can't cope with the new version of mumsnet. I can't get it to work at all... though it keeps trying and trying.

I guess this change will help me limit my use of the site. PC only from here on!

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 21/04/2022 15:47

If they could fix the format more like the old one so it's not a headache to look at and maybe actually include an edit post option that would be good.

ShowOfHands · 21/04/2022 15:48

I use Premium. I can't edit.

HQ have posted a really comprehensive list of the things they're working on.

LemonRedwood · 21/04/2022 16:01

@Zotter

I can see all posts in a thread on one page and I'm not a premium member. If you got to your settings you can change it there.

If you're on mobile, click the little person at the top right of the page, and choose settings. You should then see a drop-down near the top that says More Settings. Click that and choose Talk Settings and from the you can choose how many posts per page you see. I've attached a screenshot but I know they are still small when you click on them so hopefully what I've said makes sense!

@LemonRedwood, thank you v much. I literally just read how to change my settings to do that so pleased I can still do it.
