I see this quite a lot in my workplace, AIBU to think it's embarrassing that an adult would use a lower case 'i' in the middle of a sentence?

AIBU?

YABU

A rushed message with a typo or having a limited understanding of grammar isn’t embarrassing.

Nimo12 · 19/04/2022 20:51

Not really. You must be awfully easily embarrassed. It's just a mistake

Crazykatie · 19/04/2022 20:51

It’s just lazy typing as is leaving out all punctuation, a product of the texting, twittering communication

Lime37 · 19/04/2022 20:52

Omg I think it’s embarrassing when people feel they are better then others based on grammar.

Hugasauras · 19/04/2022 20:52

Embarrassing how? In a very formal email or to external clients, to be avoided. But in a Teams chat or back and forth between colleagues, I wouldn't care. Heck, I work in publishing and see this and other 'typed in haste' situations (and have done it myself!) pretty often!

Thatswhyimacat · 19/04/2022 20:54

Get over yourself.

josil · 19/04/2022 20:55

I should have out this into context - I see it in formal emails to clients and also on job applications. I received a job application earlier and it was done throughout the whole cover letter, it definitely was not a typo.

I mean in a formal context. Of course, an informal chat is very different.

Jalepenojello · 19/04/2022 20:55

I probably wouldn’t notice

Branleuse · 19/04/2022 20:57

Depends if its a proper email, or if its a text/casual. I dont bother capitalising much if on my phone. I know its lazy, but not embarrassing.

josil · 19/04/2022 20:58

Ok, please understand I mean in a formal context. I'm not talking about on a Mumsnet thread, or a text message to a friend.

I'm talking about an email to convey a serious message in a serious sector.

pictish · 19/04/2022 21:00

Yes it’s a bit sloppy.

Tallisimo · 19/04/2022 21:00

Probably just typos. On an pad or phone screen it can be really hard to see if you’ve lower cased by mistake!

RedRobin100 · 19/04/2022 21:00

Yeah it’s sloppy in a work email.
But then I also see people using smiley faces at the end…

RedWingBoots · 19/04/2022 21:02

I see it in formal emails to clients
If you are the person's boss simple request that they get another member of staff who doesn't do that, and list the names, to review it.

If you aren't then STFU

and also on job applications.

It it annoys you stop reading and bin the job application.

And while we are at it shall I tell you about the texting driver I told off today?

Fedupsotired · 19/04/2022 21:04

I agree with you. It's lazy!

ChickenGotLegs · 19/04/2022 21:05

I've just been filling out a job application and have been going back to change my i to I and that was before I seen this thread! I do think it looks much better, especially in a professional setting.

IcedOatLatte · 19/04/2022 21:05

@Jalepenojello

I probably wouldn’t notice
How could you not notice? Regardless of whether you care or not I don't believe that anyone who has been conditioned to seeing an upper case I their whole life wouldnt notice a lower case one

Unless it's written or typed on a typewriter is there a device that doesn't autocorrect I. In fact my phone won't even let me type ia lower case I on its own

Mintyt · 19/04/2022 21:06

If I was writing an email to an external partner then I would write correctly, if it was am important message on teams told write correctly, if it was a quick reply on teams I wouldn't bother, and if I had an incorrect message/email it would not bother me

IcedOatLatte · 19/04/2022 21:07

I hope you also changed seen to saw Grin

It"s not about how it looks, it's just plain wrong whatever the setting

C25kBecky · 19/04/2022 21:13

Yanbu.

roastedsaltedpeanut · 19/04/2022 21:25

Absolutely unacceptable in formal settings. Most computers and phones have the in built automatic detection and correction of i into I as well as capitalise first letter at the beginning of each sentence. This technology has been around for over thirty years. If the person is so technologically inept to the point they cannot capitalise “I” automatically on their computer, then proceeds to lazily leave it as “i”, then he/she is most likely also inept at their job and predictably lazy/inept too. Nowadays 99% office based jobs will require a basic level of computer knowledge.
Mistakes like this in formal letters will fundamentally change my perception of the person.

Crazykatie · 19/04/2022 21:26

Not acceptable in any formal message at work and very unprofessional

NETSRIK · 19/04/2022 21:27

I agree OP.

WonderfulYou · 19/04/2022 21:31

YABU I think it’s an odd thing to be embarrassed about.

However in this day and age I don’t know how it’s very common as spell/grammar checker usually picks it up or changes it automatically anyway.

I do know many people who struggle with things like dyslexia and can find text on a screen quite difficult to read so it wouldn’t stop me from giving them an interview.
