I see this quite a lot in my workplace, AIBU to think it's embarrassing that an adult would use a lower case 'i' in the middle of a sentence?

AIBU?

I confess to being a bit of a pedant, but even I wouldn't consider this to be embarrassing.

carefullycourageous · 19/04/2022 21:35

@Lime37

Omg I think it’s embarrassing when people feel they are better then others based on grammar.
Exacty what I was going to say.
SmellyOldOwls · 19/04/2022 21:36

No, the content of the message is what's important.

I do cringe at inappropriate use of 'myself' though. 'Please respond to myself by close of play' raises the hairs on my arms.

grapewines · 19/04/2022 21:40

It's lazy not to proofread client emails, but I couldn't get too worked up about it.

ecnatsid · 19/04/2022 21:41

This is the most mumsnet post ever

JemimaTiggywinkle · 19/04/2022 21:45

I do agree. However I think the reason is probably that phones/ Microsoft word etc autocorrect it to capital I, so personally I never bother to capitalise because I know it will happen automatically.

I would go back and correct it if it didn’t autocorrect though.

Jewel1968 · 19/04/2022 21:56

But why would you be embarrassed? There are lots of things that awaken the pedant in me but I stop and remind myself that I makes mistakes too.

TolkiensFallow · 19/04/2022 21:58

It’s sloppy and looks unprofessional.

surreygirl1987 · 19/04/2022 21:59

Yes it is sloppy in a formal context. But you are comma splicing yourself - do you realise that?

Dunnoburt · 19/04/2022 22:02

Phone messages etc YABU (takes me ages to type on my bloody phone because it gets Everything I want to type wr9ng! - see look lol) .. But official docs YANBU... It's a pet hate! ....

Ever heard of Muphry?

Umm...

Doloresabernathy42 · 19/04/2022 22:04

I've shat myself in public, now that is embarrassing.

I can't say I'd be particularly bothered about spelling mistakes TBH.

😂😂

Lesperance · 19/04/2022 22:09

Yes, a professional in a formal context should not do this, and should be carefully checking their work to ensure there are no errors. I find this one really glaring though, it's not like a missed comma.

Letterasaurus · 19/04/2022 22:14

Totally unacceptable except in very informal communication.

Hawkins001 · 19/04/2022 22:17

What's more important I'd ask, is the content and context of x communications, rather than weather the i is a capital one or not,

Dancer47 · 19/04/2022 22:17

I agree OP. It would look like the person doesn't know it should be capitalised or does know, but doesn't care enough to change it. What else would they be sloppy about?

VashtaNerada · 19/04/2022 22:18

YANBU. I’d assume the person was either lazy or not very well educated.

WomanStanleyWoman · 19/04/2022 22:19

I agree, OP. That CV would be going straight in the shredder.

I once had a boss who actually signed her name with a lower case first letter. I already had zero respect for her, but with every email I found a new level below zero.

CockysGirl · 19/04/2022 22:20

I would definitely notice and in the context of a job application would judge the person less favourably.

DPotter · 19/04/2022 22:22

Need to set up the auto correct to change i to I. Thought this was automatic auto correct. but at the end of the day it's no big deal

surreygirl1987 · 19/04/2022 22:23

Oh I had this!! He had the nerve to proofread something of mine, and in my email reply to him I pointledly wrote his name with a lowercase character.

Booboobagins · 19/04/2022 22:27

I mistype all the time. It's partially dyslexia but also me trying to speed through things and on a phone not seeing enough of the screen to see what might be incorrect.

I'm fairly lax on it cos of my dyslexia, but I get what you're saying.

I look at it like this - can I understand it, if yes let it go. If not, it's an issue.

ZerotwoZero · 19/04/2022 22:28

Actually OP I work with some very talented individuals in highly skilled jobs and a couple of them have learning disabilities and there skills are more important to me than spelling on their CV or emails. If I found out recruitment were binning CVs of people who were excellent candidates with good technical skills but lacked a bit of grammar I would be doing my hardest to get them removed.

I (lower case) think people like you like to put yourself on a pedestal due to your superior grammar but I can bet alot of these people are far more skilled than you in other areas. Pathetic 🤔
