To update about The Family Sex Show

There are active two threads on this in Feminism but I feel I just have to update here for traffic. Although protests appear to have, for now, stopped the theatre production going ahead, new and highly disturbing material has today appeared on their webpage, clearly aimed at children. It (cheerily and breezily) suggests, among other things, that children search for images of masturbating animals on the internet and then draw what they see. I am not going to Google that term, I really don't want that in my history, but first, can you imagine what children will be exposed to if they search that, and second, this is pure and simple grooming of children into being abused. Masturbating animals? What larks! Lets have an arts and crafts session about it! Next steps: Masturbating with Uncle Jim? Why not? Masturbating Uncle Jim? Of course!

I have now made a complaint to CEOP. Others may wish to as well.

That tweet, I have only read the words but after sharing it with my sibling she says there is lots of dialogue that isn't subtitled (we both have hearing loss, hers not as acute as mine) but she can not make out what they are saying.

This is from Julie, my contact at CEOP. Action is being taken...
I do not currently have a residential address in the UK, but could people who are, also contact 101 to report if thay possibly can? Report the show, AND the website AND tweets AND podcast.

Where does Esther Rantzen stand on all this, do we know? She's pretty straight talking.

May not be the best idea from what I hear, it's not a great idea to confuse the image presented with the real person. Rather like Hermione Granger is a wholly different person to Emma Watson.

picklemewalnuts · 22/04/2022 19:42

I see. I'd hoped her high profile on Childrens' issues might be helpful. Never mind.

Comocomida · 22/04/2022 19:53

I've had the same response from Julie at CEOP and I've reported online to the Internet Watch Foundation but not received a response yet. I've phoned the NSPCC and I'm waiting for them to call me back, as requested, to give me an update. I also called Stop It Now who advised they were a helpline only however were pleased to hear that this was being reported.

I've still to contact Avon and Somerset police which I will do using their online form and, after calling the Arts Council, National Lottery and Theatre Royal Bath, I will be sending emails to each of them.

I was disappointed in the response from Theatre Royal Bath who told me that the show was cancelled and only appears in their program of events so that any tickets holders can get a refund. This is untrue as they are still promoting 'private performances for an invited audience' to be scheduled at a later date.

Thanks to everyone helping to raise this to the right authorities.

I might be wrong but I think their website has now been taken down. Send me the link if not so I can report it! Thanks

Comocomida · 22/04/2022 21:10

thefamilysexshow.com/tfss is the link I found.
I'm not on Twitter though so I don't know about their Twitter account or tweets

Crazyinlove123 · 22/04/2022 21:27

Thank you. Reported.

I find in fact that the people who did not feel "uncomfortable" at the time of the abuse (especially boys who experienced physical pleasure and arousal, as of course they often do) are often the ones left more disturbed and distressed by the experience in later life. Telling children that something is OK because it "feels" OK is a dangerous dangerous message, and oh so easily exploited by the abusers.

Girls who experience sexual abuse can also be confused by experienced physical arousal.

theDudesmummy · 23/04/2022 08:04

@Joystir59 yes you are absolutely right, girls can too. I was meant that in my experience of talking to survivors it was the boys who did who experienced the most shame and guilt. (There was no comma I didn't say "boys, who experienced physical pleasure...", I said "boys who experienced physical pleasure..."). Sorry it was less than clear though.

The show was bad enough, but now we hear that the same group have access to schools as "The School of Sexuality Education".

I wonder if there's a list so parents can check if they are in their child's school.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/04/2022 08:34

That's a very good detailed article clearly making the links between the individuals, the theatre group and the inappropriately named "school of sex education". I like the way it quotes their safeguarding free comments and highlights the Arts Council as the funder.
Well done the Mail for yet another clear article about all this. Shame the Guardian doesn't have the same interest in safeguarding children.

There is and I started a thread on it. Called ‘AIBU to ask if your child’s school is on this list‘

Lhddujvf · 23/04/2022 08:43

Did I just read this. Grotesque.

"Sexual development and behaviour in children starts from birth. It’s important that children are supported in their exploratory development"

KimikosNightmare · 23/04/2022 09:11

It's a long thread so just in case anyone missed it , this bears repeating- these people suggested children should use the internet to find examples of animals masturbating and draw the pictures they find.

DrBlackbird · 23/04/2022 09:12

I thought the title of the bbc article on this show’s cancellation was extremely misleading and wanted to complain. However, doing so online requires one to include:

• Your full name
• Your email address
• Your full postal address
• Your contact telephone number

Has this always been the norm?

Puts me off thinking I have to include my home address. It does seem that there are concerns over its reporting of issues. Such as the BBC referring to Harvey Marcelin as ‘she/her’ throughout its article with a buried mention that Harvey

recently identified as a woman
only after a complaint was made. In its initial reporting no mention was made of this at all. Then I read that one of the producer’s of Thisegg the company behind the show also works for BBC Scotland leaving me to conclude that I’m definitely not confident to provide anything in a complaint other than an email address. My nephew recently asserted that the BBC was full of paedos and I said what nonsense. Now I’m wondering?

What do others think about the providing so many contact details?

borntobequiet · 23/04/2022 09:19

@DrBlackbird you can phone them, I’ve done so in the past and spoken to an actual person.
www.bbc.co.uk/contact/complaints

borntobequiet · 23/04/2022 09:19

Though it might be recorded out of office hours.

Artichokeleaves · 23/04/2022 09:25

Yes, I'm very uncomfortable to provide all that information in order to be able to speak to them about what I'm compelled to pay them for. Particularly with no information I could immediately see on what the information is used for, or how it is stored. And with the heavy bias very evident at the BBC.

My guess is that it's providing a useful turn off for many people being willing to do all that to complain, which is probably quite nicely lowering their complaints ratings and statistics.

I honestly wasn't this cynical until a year or two ago but the relentless hammering of awful experience starts to wear you down.

DrBlackbird · 23/04/2022 09:57

Many thanks @borntobequiet

I’ll try that route. Thought about writing but assumed it could easily be thrown into a rubbish bin.

ScrollingLeaves · 23/04/2022 10:06

@Dr Blackbird
What do others think about the providing so many contact details?

I don’t like it but have done it. I supposed the reason was to in order to know the complaint came from a genuine, individual person.

But I also suspect they use it to flag up and instantly dismiss any “Oh her agains” like me.

The BBCs reporting on these sorts of issues is worthy of Russia. It is dire.

LastTrainEast · 23/04/2022 10:07

AlisonDonut, thanks, I hadn't seen that one yet.
