Is this portion too small (pic)??? Should I complain?

OK, a little 1st world problem-ish but we're really trying to budget and eat out rarely, as a treat. Went out over the weekend and ordered this pasta dish from a well known chain restaurant, costs around £15. Is it just me who thinks it's a kiddy portion? I took it up with the waitress who said it's the portion size and thats that... should I email a complaint?

@TeachyTeacher Was it Prezzo? We went in December and the portions were starter size

So sorry guys!!! It just won't bloody post the pic!!! anyway it was honestly about a small cereal bowls worth of pasta and one piece of chicken! It was a chicken pesto dish! Does anyone else think the restaurants will start to shrink portions but not prices given the energy hike, their bills must be soaring too it's a terrible vicious circle (where my belly lost out!!!)

I visited pizza express recently for the 1st time and surprised by the prices. £13 for a salad which was not much different to the price of my hsuabnds large pizza!

I had a pasta dish in Wetherspoons recently. A vegetarian dish that was actually very good as these things go. I forget the price, but not expensive. Calories over 600, which is a lot for a simple meal without meat or cheese.

The portion did look very small to me though. I think it's to do with the calorie count and does really demonstrate that we've lost sight of what a "normal" portion is.

The large breakfast on the Wetherspoons menu is almost 1500 calories. It does make you think twice!

"Real" Italians are far more likely to use dried pasta than fresh, fresh isn't considered superior at all and many dishes are better with dried because it carries the sauce better.

Twattergy · 21/04/2022 07:33

I was disappointed recently to pay £13 for a melanzane at Pizza express that was extremely small. More expensive than a pizza, made me wish I'd saved money and gone for the unhealthy option!

If it was Pizza Express their pasta portions are measly as fuck. Pizzas great, salads great…the pasta is a rip off. I know because dd always orders it and I balk at the price of it for what she gets. The risotto is similarly mean.

CottonSock · 21/04/2022 07:51

My local Italian serves 200g per portion! I always eat too much and have tummy ache.
I find the portion at prezzo about right as another poster said. We'll I did, not had for a while.

Maybe it’s dependent on the restaurants. I order their pesto chicken pasta and the ones I have been to have always been a reasonable size to me. Does it fill me up, no, but I am content after eating it

Is it really or is it that they use huge plates/bowls?

Soffit · 21/04/2022 09:38

My stomach tells me that it is the size of the portion. The large plate is merely creating an illusion of being served a large dish and actually makes me feel even hungrier. I am all for sensible eating but my mum (who was a feeder) would never even have served a starter of the size of a Pizza Express pasta main. That said, it has gone downhill as a chain so I am not surprised.

BeyondMyWits · 21/04/2022 09:55

We ate at TGIs last week. Portion sizes are definitely smaller... by about a quarter to a third. Prices are a bit higher too.

We'll just be eating out less.

PeachyPeachTrees · 21/04/2022 10:43

If you can't post a pic, can you tell us bowl measurements? I usually find meal sizes too big in cheap and mid priced restaurants.

Can’t see your pasta, but I received this tiny, mean sliver of cake at a Bristol park.
Cost £2.95 ish and I paid before seeing it.
I had asked slice size, too and was shown a mimed triangle.

Stall said “” It’s homemade”

Meanest slice ever.

Omg @oakleaffy

someones had a nibble of that 😱

HollowTalk · 21/04/2022 12:03

But she didn't see what she was going to get. Of course she has the right to complain.

wordleaddict · 21/04/2022 13:42

creased up with laughter at the idea the English dont like food that tastes of anything. My DS says it too - but like, he eats our food every day, curry, chilli con carne, bacon, tempura, baccalau, chicken stock risotto, roast beef and horseradish etc etc. Idiocy!

But on main question - eating out is certainly a luxury now and not something you do to get stuffed. It reminds me of the reported behaviour of poorer women of old - invited out on a date, they would fill up on something cheap at home, so as not to look greedy or starved in front of their suitors!

Soffit · 21/04/2022 17:29

We ate out at the Hard Rock Cafe today and we LEFT STILL FEELING HUNGRY!!! They have certainly downsized their portions. There were dishes on the menu with pushing 3000 Kcal. That is the one place where portion size was OTT so I figured that downsizing may result in an average portion. Obviously not the case though!

Floralnomad · 21/04/2022 21:55

I often have the Pollo Pesto pasta in Pizza Express and I find it plenty big enough , not measly in the slightest .
