RURAL RACISM

findingthepremise · 18/04/2022 22:44

So, I live in a predominately white area, an affluent area also. It has become apparent to me that even after decades have passed, the mixed or otherwise non white minority has never developed. I ask myself why? I find that in many rural areas this is the case and I cant understand why. Is having a housing stipulation under the council that requests that only people with family ties to the area can apply to put their name forward for the housing association schemes? is that possibly an undercurrent of racism?

There certainly are. But imo perpetuating the perceived prejudice on to generations so far removed from incidents of the past is counter productive imo. An example would be the post from WakeMeUpWhenTheyHaveGone

Racism will only cease to exist once White people do the work.

White people need to deconstruct the system of White Supremacy that they have upheld, whether consciously or unconsciously.

White people invented racism, i.e., the classification of humans by the colour of their skin, in order to benefit themselves and to justify the disgraceful treatment of others.

That statement itself is incredibly racist. You cannot reasonably challenge racism at the same time as maligning an entire race based on a small amount.

Educate by all means. But as has been demonstrated by this thread. The majority of the human race have faced serious aversions or discrimination at some point, based on their social standing not colour or race.

Guestetiquette
Surely then your friends of colour are actually displaying racism themselves-ie I'm not going there because they are all white. I can totally understand missing the multicultural aspect of a city. Just like missing the ability to go to the theatre or eat cusine not found in rural places.

I stand by what I said, and it is not racist.

Everyone of every race, creed and colour needs to be on board to eradicate racism, not just the people who are affected by racism.
Therefore, White people need to get on board (allies) to help bring down White Supremacy, as they are the ones either consciously (racists) or unconsciously upholding it, alongside non-White racist people (including brown-skinned people who perpetrate Colourism).

This is why I keep referring you and others to the World Wide Web to conduct further research, in order to fully understand how and why we are where we are re. racism, and the various cultural wars being instigated by various Right Wing Governments around the World.

Again, I said what I said. I am not going to backtrack on it or apologise to you. Pointing out the reality of the situation and my thoughts (as I see it) on how racism could be a thing of the past is not racist.

Furthermore, you have the audacity to call me racist when you are clearly presenting as one of the racist people on this thread being offensive! Your contributions to this thread re. gollywogs, reparations, etc are ignorant, goady and highly offensive. Numerous other pp have also rightly told you so.

Like I suggested days ago, please go away are check your ‘Unconscious Bias’, if you haven’t already done so.
I absolutely refuse to post links and provide easy to find references for lazy grown adults who clearly know how to type and use the internet.

If you’re in employment, ask your Manager or HR to direct you to Unconscious Bias training. This training is finally being implemented in most workplaces in 2023. There should be a requirement for all employees to complete this training alongside all other standard training courses as part of your role/job. A lot of this training is online, really clear and easy to understand re. the different forms of discrimination many people unfortunately experience.

I’m sensing that there may other nuances and issues at play in regard to your understanding of my position, so please research further at a pace suitable to you. I appreciate that there is an insane amount a lot of information to learn, re-learn, fully understand and digest, and at a level that most of us have never before had to contend with before in a short period of time. Rome was not built in a day.

At this stage, I’ll allow you the benefit of doubt in regard to whether you are intentionally being goady or willfully ignorant, as I feel that there may be other underlying issues at play in relation to your understanding and/or comprehension skills.

@Valerie23

Racism is a lot more subtle than signs signs No Blacks or Irish Allowed.

I would never live in a place where there are no black or brown people. My son is mixed race, he needs to be somewhere with people who look like him, who he can identify.
A small example of how racism is ‘baked in’ even if you live somewhere ethnically diverse.
Several years ago my son was in a primary school where the majority of his class where black, brown or mixed race. They were asked to do a piece of homework about famous Victorians. All of the examples they were given were white. Now I liked the teacher, he loved his job, he cried buckets when they left at the end of the year. Yet it did not occur to him to give his class examples of black history.

There's one incredibly racist poster on this thread and it's not the one you keep quoting.

Thank you! I was seriously beginning to check myself, as I really don’t think the posts that White Van Man keeps re-posting are racist.

As previously stated, I have such a rich and mixed ethnic background, and some of my family members are White (not just the dead White slave masters - Sorry. Excuse my dark sense of humour You gotta laugh 😄). Anyway, my point: is I love them all.

My friends come from a mix of races and cultures. My work colleagues and neighbours are also a mixed bag and I generally like and get on with most of them without any issues. Most importantly, I treat people how I would like to be treated.

Do you genuinely not see the hypocrisy in you tarring an entire race as being one thing. Do you not see the bias you are accusing me of is dripping off of you.

You refuse to provide links or information to support your claims. 😵
You will not answer reasonable questions.
You bring up the caste system to try and support you that White supremacy exists. Yet the Countries with the caste system in place are all self governing and ran by Persons of Colour. Furthermore the caste system was in place centuries prior to Britain having an empire.

Why is a Chinese family becoming prosperous in Jamaica a race issue caused by Whites? The Jamaican Parliament is by a vast majority Black.

The irony in your sentence of 'Rome wasn't built in a day' is obviously lost on you given what is being discussed.

I’ve also tried to be quite considered with my responses.
I refuse to sugar-coat history, to make it more palatable for others (excuse the sugar plantation pun!)

Excuse me if I’m too blunt, but I’m not going to beat around the bush about this topic, as this shit (racism) needs to stop! Plus, that’s not my personality. I’m very direct. Sorry, but not sorry.

I know I said I wouldn’t provide references, but I’ll share this one due to mentioning sugar plantations above:

•Harding, Thomas
White Debt: The Demerara Uprising and Britain’s Legacy of Slavery

I know, I know! I haven’t listed it in the proper book reference format, as I haven’t had to do so since writing essays at Uni decades ago, and I can’t be bothered to check. I’m getting tired again (you know, that tiredness that black, brown and mixed people suffer from, due to constantly explaining racism)!
I’ve just quickly copied it over from my ‘Books to Read List’. My Aunt recommended it and I’ve seen it referenced in various newspapers and magazines.

You don't think there's a mild difference between the origins of a doll and 'white supremacy is everywhere just trust me bro'?

Ohforfox · 25/08/2023 20:26

I live in a semi rural affluent area & my DD's school is now more than 60% muslim pupils, meaning celebrating Eid is as common as celebrating Christmas. We have good links to the city so this may be why. I would assume good schooling is a pull for most people with young families moving to an area & if the schools are too small it would feel off putting. I think there is racism everywhere, but perhaps rural communities aren't as exposed to other cultures and races so it may be commented on more?

WakeMeUpWhenTheyHaveGone · 25/08/2023 20:28

Valerie23 · 25/08/2023 18:03

I live rurally. I never see anyone but white people unless I go into a town or city centre.

When I go hiking every day I only see the occasional white person.

There aren't any signs or anything that would deter anyone of an ethnic origin so there's nothing to stop anyone coming here. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m assuming you’re white or white passing?

If so, how would you know if there were any signs or anything that would deter anyone of an ethnic origin to going to where you are?

What would you expect the racism to look like?

Do you think you would see or understand any possible microgressions directed at the black and brown people you see when you’re in a town or city centre?

Well given that no one has said "trust me bro" I don't see how that's relevant. And it's not just the origins of a doll, it's an attempt to claim a racist doll isn't actually racist.

No first of all I said what I believed to be the truth about the dolls origin. Secondly when responding to WakeMeUp's post when she brought the golliwog doll into the conversation. I pointed out it can only be seen as racist if the person with it intends it to be seen that way. Otherwise it is just a pile of rags sewn together. No different from a See you Jimmy hat or Morris dancer doll.

I imagine Glowie is getting at the reluctance to state or actually show what loss Wakemeup has suffered. To show proof that in the current world Every white man is a white supremacist.

HRTQueen · 25/08/2023 21:58

Because there is still a lot of racism in the UK

might not being aggressive but it’s certainly passive aggressive and the othering the over fawning I see this with family it’s embarrassing

i think in cities one most tend to be more mixed

Both sets of my Grandparents worked hard and were able to eventually purchase houses in London after arriving in the U.K. during the Windrush years. Both of my Grandmothers also worked outside of the home whilst also raising large families. My maternal Grandmother was the one who applied for their first mortgage.

Although my both of my paternal Grandfathers’ families were not totally dirt poor back in the Caribbean (by Caribbean standards mind you), my Grandparents’ generation was the first generation able to pass down generational wealth.

Did you mean to quote me?

My nan and grandad moved over from Jamaica. My grandads brothers also went to America, Manchester, Bradford, Walthamstow.

My nans parents were quite well off and disowned her for getting with my grandad, and my grandads parents were indentured slaves from India.

They bought a house, my mum and her 8 brothers and sisters bought houses.

I bought a house.

I don't understand your point in relation to my comment.

Actually, the sentiment is implicit when making assertions and refusing to back then up.
Way to dodge the question though ;)
