Based on actual meter readings

March: £61
April: £133

More than double despite only having the heating on 3 times (for one hour at a time) this month. All points switched off overnight, apart from 2 phones charging.

I've seen a lot of threads recently about how to save on energy bills etc. All very nice and well to do, but why should we HAVE to do that? Why aren't we up in arms and protesting over this? Why are we being so fucking British about it?!!

Its OK to say i lived in the 60s with ice on the inside of our windows in the mornings, but we are not in the 60's we are in 2022 for fuck sake!!! These companies are making billions in profit. Why are we sitting back and just accepting it should happen?

I have no plausible solution, just makes me so angry!!

Rant over. Apologies 😔

So:

I guess you are on the price cap?
What was the usage in KWH for that period?
What devices do you have that use a lot of power or energy?

FAQs · 18/04/2022 22:44

Mines usually around £65, dreading the next one, who are you with?

PurpleFlower1983 · 18/04/2022 22:45

Ouch! Not looking forward to October when it’s going up again!

StupidUsernameUnavailable · 18/04/2022 22:48

We were fixed, but they moved us to a variable when it all kicked in. We have the normal TV, WiFi, 2 phones. Standard kitchen appliances.

I knew it would go up, but why are we just accepting it, and figuring out ways of dealing with it?

Double again I would imagine 😒

Good year by the way!! 😁

What do you expect to be done about it ?

FuckmyHead · 18/04/2022 22:55

I just got my March to April bill, I actually cried and felt sick, it’s billed on actual usage. Last March 15th to April 14th it was £75 gas and electric, this March 15th to April 14th for slightly LESS usage than last year is £175! This is actual readings and billing.
I’m fucked now and have no idea what I will do come winter and that’s without more rises due.

StupidUsernameUnavailable · 18/04/2022 22:57

@Unphased

I clearly said I had no plausible solution, but why are we just putting up with it?

That's the thing - unfortunately we don't know what October will bring, but it's going to be higher than April
TotalRhubarb · 18/04/2022 22:59

Are the energy companies expecting to make the same level of profit as before, or are they planning to take a hit to profit to share the pain with consumers?

Unphased · 18/04/2022 23:00

That’s what I’m asking, what else can we do? Energy is bought on the open market and sold to us, the government do not control it

SingingSands · 18/04/2022 23:01

@Unphased

What do you expect to be done about it ?
I'd expect the energy companies, who make billions in profit, to reduce their prices.

Billions. Numbers that are incomprehensible.

But it won't happen.

TrickorTreacle · 18/04/2022 23:01

I know the Russia-Ukraine war doesn't help, but the hikes really started around COP26.

I was on £80/month for the last 2 years and now they want £260 for the same usage. All bulbs are LED, 1 laptop, 1 phone, only take showers (not baths), boiler on for 1 hour per day for water/ch, boil 2 x 250ml of water per day for 2 hot drinks, fridge/freezer.

£80 to £260 for the above. That's an £180 with nothing to show for it.

F U GRETA.

altforvarmt · 18/04/2022 23:02

@Unphased

What do you expect to be done about it ?
In France, the increase to the fuel cap was 4%. In the UK, the increase was 54%.

We're not just stumbling blindly into this with no options. The British government is allowing this to happen. The French government didn't.

StupidUsernameUnavailable · 18/04/2022 23:02

@cakeorwine

If mine goes up to (a minimum of) £266 in October I can't pay it. End of.

What are they going to do?

Unphased · 18/04/2022 23:03

all SingingSands
These companies are at the moment selling electric and gas to us at a loss, hence that’s why a lot of energy providers have now gone bust

doggiescats · 18/04/2022 23:05

Am actually worried…tonight my bloody husband put the heating on 😢He was cold…really!! I went into every room and switched off radiators…bloody ridiculous!!

NewYorkCityDreamer · 18/04/2022 23:06

Ours was £43 and is now £140 :(

You might want to look at your actual usage as that seems a lot - based on what you have just said

Unless you have really long showers

StupidUsernameUnavailable · 18/04/2022 23:09

@doggiescats

You shouldn't have to be doing that 😔

But at least 10% thing you ABU to do so and should just swallow it and get on with it.

Mainly because the French government own a large percentage of the generating companies, we have privatised all of ours

altforvarmt · 18/04/2022 23:10

In Norway, when energy costs go above a certain threshold, a government subsidy scheme pays 80% of the additional cost.

The British government would like us to believe it's powerless in the face of price increases. Other governments don't take the mick out of their citizens.

altforvarmt · 18/04/2022 23:18

The UK has energy companies that imposed green premiums to allow them to invest in renewable energy. Thousands of wind turbines, generating massive amounts of energy. The equivalent of 97% of Scotland's gross energy consumption was from renewable sources. It's windy up here. That energy is still being produced.

Yet the price cap goes up 54%? Something doesn't add up.

Several friends are now having 'cold food and drink days' so rhey don't have to use kettle, oven or microwave. They don't want to but they have too, and in this day and age should people have live like this
