Based on actual meter readings

March: £61
April: £133

More than double despite only having the heating on 3 times (for one hour at a time) this month. All points switched off overnight, apart from 2 phones charging.

I've seen a lot of threads recently about how to save on energy bills etc. All very nice and well to do, but why should we HAVE to do that? Why aren't we up in arms and protesting over this? Why are we being so fucking British about it?!!

Its OK to say i lived in the 60s with ice on the inside of our windows in the mornings, but we are not in the 60's we are in 2022 for fuck sake!!! These companies are making billions in profit. Why are we sitting back and just accepting it should happen?

I have no plausible solution, just makes me so angry!!

Rant over. Apologies 😔

Daimbars, we're on the same page.
I just feel it needs to be pointed out, as many now can't remember a time when utilities and services were publicly owned, and so do not necessarily appreciate what we stand to loose.

Unphased · 19/04/2022 11:20

Perhaps it’s time we stop this green energy drive, that already goes on our energy bills, time to fire up the coal power stations, decades worth of Coal underground, start North Sea oil and gas again properly, it’s no good wanting to nationalise energy provider’s when we have to import so much of our energy

Hallyup89 · 19/04/2022 11:23

5 kids, one disabled so I'm on Carer's Allowance. Husband works full time on an ok wage, just enough to prevent us from being entitled to any other benefits. Currently paying £370 a month. That's more than the government thinks a carer needs to live on.

MrOllivander · 19/04/2022 11:41

@Unphased

EveSix Can they look in the mirror and say they’ve cut out all luxuries, smoking, latest phones, subscriptions, nail bars, coffee bars, latest clothing etc
I don't smoke, go on holiday, have my nails done, have sky. My broadband is £29 I have Netflix but given I'm still shielding that's my lifeline of stuff to watch and at £7pm it isn't breaking the bank

I'm not working my arse off for 40hrs a week to not be able to afford £7 for Netflix when I don't have holidays or days out to look forward to

Selmaselma · 19/04/2022 11:41

In Switzerland energy prices have not gone up. The government is working on the issue with the energy companies and ready to step in with a lot of money. Also investing a lot in subsidies for green alternatives. What is the UK government doing?

Zilla1 · 19/04/2022 11:51

For all those erroneously claiming the government is doing nothing, don't forget the tax cut just before the next election when coincidentally things will be more predictable than they are immediately predictable.

The government is acting in the interests of its priority constituents and, if it wasn't, the Conservative MPs would be agitating for a new PM. That isn't happening.

There is literally nothing the government is willing to do that it thinks will be in the interests of its key constituents.

Zilla1 · 19/04/2022 11:56

It is assuredly a coincidence that the last three Chancellors were personally worth c£100s millions, c£10m and c£10m. Was it the Rt Hon George Eustace said when the current Chancellor was criticised after a neighbour might have leaked some story, something along the lines of 'it's getting like a wealthy man can't be Chancellor any more'. Pure jealousy of someone with two houses that come with the sidegig, probably by the public who buy avocados and new iphones.

VapeVamp12 · 19/04/2022 11:56

French energy companies said they were going to increase costs like they have in UK. Macron said "no, you cover the increase" and they have.

Maybe BJ should grow some balls or stop being a corrupt MF.

Zilla1 · 19/04/2022 11:59

French corporates do what the Government instructs, especially at election time.

The UK government does what it's key constituents instruct, perhaps less visibly at election time,

Unphased · 19/04/2022 12:19

MrOllivander
Are you suggesting that you’ll give up work if you can’t afford £7?
At least you’ll know what to cut if things get tight

mogsrus · 19/04/2022 13:48

@DeyHuggee

In France, the increase to the fuel cap was 4%. In the UK, the increase was 54%

Although I agree the government should be doing more, its not quite the same in France as they very sensibly invested in nuclear energy which is a fantastic option.

How on earth is nuclear a fantastic option? It’s all good until it goes horribly wrong, look at Chernobyl, & the spent rods are buried in concrete, wow, theirs a massive cleanup sometime for the people who end up doing it. Nuclear clean energy with very nasty outcome
NewPapaGuinea · 19/04/2022 14:11

OP, you were on a fixed rate, so you were actually underpaying for a long time, as many were. You therefore benefited from low prices at that point and obviously weren't complaining then. This is why many energy companies went bust, they were buying in at many times the cost of what their customers were paying.

Fixed means companies by your energy upfront so they are less susceptible to price rises. The companies went bust because they were having so sell variable rate gas at a loss because of the cap.

I’m surprised companies didn’t explain better that long term fixed would be better once the cap increases kick in.

gogohm · 19/04/2022 14:16

What annoys me most is that my standing change is double that of those who live in London. Why? I get paying for power but I don't understand why we should pay a daily charge for the privilege of being connected, and if there is it should be flat rate across the country. I live very close to a nuclear power plant that generates cheap electricity, if should be cheaper here!

squiller · 19/04/2022 14:17

Ours has gone up from £96 to £220 per month. WTF.

MrOllivander · 19/04/2022 14:20

No, that's not what I meant I meant I work bloody hard for not very much money and Netflix is my "treat" Chronic health conditions, permanently knackered and could really do with not working 40hrs a week If you're working just to pay the bills, and never go out, socialise, go on holiday it's a bit "what am I actually living for?"
Sugarandspice213 · 19/04/2022 14:42

@mogsrus there are already nuclear energy plants in the uk.

Chernobyl - communist.

Unphased · 19/04/2022 15:19

MrOllivander
I’m sorry, but unfortunately that is how it might be for a few years, just like my childhood

Zilla1 · 19/04/2022 15:23

Didn't the energy firm Chief Exec read the bulletin? The deal is no legislative hit provided they don't blame the government.

hamsterchump · 19/04/2022 15:32

If mine goes up to (a minimum of) £266 in October I can't pay it. End of.

What are they going to do?[/quote]
Sadly they'll put you on to prepayment meters with whatever debt preloaded on so you can't avoid paying if you want to use anything.

MrOllivander · 19/04/2022 16:09

@Unphased

MrOllivander I’m sorry, but unfortunately that is how it might be for a few years, just like my childhood
I think that's the worry for me - I'm concerned it won't just be a few years because then something else will happen and I'm not sure food/energy prices will drop

Cut off your supply

Unphased · 19/04/2022 16:39

MrOllivander
No, except you are right with energy and food prices, a professor on the radio a few years ago was saying that we’ve had the best times, it peaked at 2005 and from now on peoples livelihoods will start to go down hill, with population growth and climate change and refugee crisis, looks like he my be right

bellfrint · 19/04/2022 16:46

I agree the best yrs are over😰. The problem we have in the UK is an ageing population, well the lack of planning for it.

rka2017 · 19/04/2022 16:56

It’s ridiculous, while energy companies make profit we have to sacrifice heating which was affordable before April 2022. Heating is not luxury it’s essential

FAQs · 28/04/2022 16:58

I’ve just had my first post rise estimate, rising from £65 pm to £82. I’m £93 in credit. @StupidUsernameUnavailable
