YABU - yes, I handwrite lots
YANBU - no, I hardly handwrite anything

I'm a schoolteacher and was thinking the other day about how practically the only time I ever handwrite anything, apart from the occasional birthday card, is when I'm marking pupils' exercise books. It made me wonder if people actually write by hand much anymore, or do most people only write by typing on a phone/ computer etc?

2DogsOnMySofa · 18/04/2022 20:46

Lists: shopping, work 'to do' lists to name but a few

usernotfound0000 · 18/04/2022 20:46

I do. I note take at meetings so hand write those. I also insist on handwriting the shopping list every week, much to DH amusement. I just find it much easier to shop with the list in front of me.

PonyPatter44 · 18/04/2022 20:48

I write a lot of reports at work, and I have to handwrite my notes /plan, because its how i focus my thoughts best. I can type up from there, but the initial stuff needs to be written down.

Part of my job is also having face to face meetings in environments where I dont have access to electronic equipment. In those circumstances, i have to handwrite notes or they don't get written!

littlepeas · 18/04/2022 20:48

I still hand write lots of stuff! All my planning for work and all the notes I make when training/in meetings are all have written.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/04/2022 20:51

My journals.
Post-it notes.

I did wonder when I was still teaching if it was the most handwritingy profession left in a world of technology.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 18/04/2022 20:51

I write lists and things in my planner.
I prefer stationary and note books rather than using tech.

TokyoSushi · 18/04/2022 20:51

Work to do lists & notes

Birthday cards etc

That's about it!

Giveitall · 18/04/2022 20:52

I hand write a letter from time to time to a dear old aunt who loves an old fashioned newsy letter.
I hand write some drafts of what I want to say before I compose a business email.
I hand write my shopping lists, postcards, appointments in my paper diary.
However I also use my iPhone for notes, emails on the run and texting.
Love handwriting anything especially if I need to pre-gather my thoughts.

MintMe · 18/04/2022 20:53

Absolutely! I work in Comms and like @PonyPatter44, I have to write freehand first. It allows my brain to formulate the next words or sentences while I'm writing the current ones. Weird but the only way I can do it.

To do lists are also handwritten too.

Goldengoosey · 18/04/2022 20:54

I hand write my notes in work meetings. I’ve tried one note etc but much prefer old school handwritten notes and to do lists.

OfstedOffred · 18/04/2022 20:55

Notes at work
Shopping lists - like a pp I just prefer it written in front of me.

helly29 · 18/04/2022 20:59

My NHS Trust still uses paper records, so lots of patient notes and prescriptions. I also write in my bullet journal and meeting notes. I'm a doctor though so my handwriting is awful Grin

savehannah · 18/04/2022 20:59

I'm amazed at the responses so far. I would imagine that almost all jobs require typing far more than handwriting. I very rarely write more than a few words by hand, and the same with my husband. Personally I think children should be taught to touch type from Reception upwards alongside handwriting as it would be much more useful in future life.

Cazalet · 18/04/2022 21:00

Pretty similar to everyone above, lists, old fashioned diary, thank you notes, my MIL loves a letter and real photos, weight loss diary, a couple of trades people who still take cheques.

FloodTheBathroom · 18/04/2022 21:01

I work in law and have to take contemporaneous (best word ever) notes during interviews with clients. Sitting with a laptop between is wouldn't be great. I also take a lot of notes during phonecalls.
My DP is a computer programmer and he also writes things out from time to time.

PonyPatter44 · 18/04/2022 21:02

I really wish I'd learned to touch-type years ago. It wouldn't change the way I work necessarily, but it would make the report-writing bit of my job a lot faster!

shabbalabba · 18/04/2022 21:03

Yes at work I sign and date about 47885335 times a day. I also have to write notes/justifications on issued paperwork if and when anything slightly deviates off the paperwork etc

MyBottleOfRibena · 18/04/2022 21:05

I hate having the shopping list on my phone. The screen keeps bloody turning off!
Kite22 · 18/04/2022 21:06

Shopping lists
To do lists
Cards - birthday, but also other occasions
Letters with Christmas cards
Notes sometimes from a meeting
Post it notes
Work diary
Notes when I am on the phone to a utility company or bank or some such
Observations or other things at work when I'm doing something where I can't take the lap top
Tables sometimes - if I want to see what different family members are doing to find a mutual 'window'
Notes to the family - "Can someone get the washing in" .... "This is not for general eating" etc
Post it notes

surreygirl1987 · 18/04/2022 21:06

Ooh interesting! I'm actually surprised at how much handwriting is still going on... but pleasantly so! Thanks for replying!

To Do Lists every single day, but never complete them.

Once a month I write a letter to my 94 year old aunt who lives up the other end of the country. I love getting her letters back too. X

LadyHooHa · 18/04/2022 21:11

All the time. My brain works through my fountain pen.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/04/2022 21:13

Birthday cards.

Notes in scripts I'm working on.

My journal, when I can be bothered to write in it.

Not much else!

shabbalabba · 18/04/2022 21:18

@FloodTheBathroom love that word...we must also be contemporaneous in my love of work Smile
