YABU - yes, I handwrite lots
YANBU - no, I hardly handwrite anything

I'm a schoolteacher and was thinking the other day about how practically the only time I ever handwrite anything, apart from the occasional birthday card, is when I'm marking pupils' exercise books. It made me wonder if people actually write by hand much anymore, or do most people only write by typing on a phone/ computer etc?

Yes lots of lists, mainly 'notes to self' or i forget!

EBearhug · 19/04/2022 00:06

Yes. I could probably do most of my work typing, but I like handwriting, and I think differently when writing rather than typing. I also do shopping lists, diary & calendar, to-do lists and so on. I still write proper letters, too, because like to, and it's different from email. There's a physical pleasure in writing on nice paper with a decent ink pen. I recognise fewer colleagues' or friends' handwriting than I would have 25 years ago, though.

Also, I don't have to battle bloody autocorrect when I write by hand.

I think a fair amount. Today alone I've written 2 letters to friends, 3 lists, notes in my filofax.

Other things I handwrite:

Lesson ideas and plans at work (actual lessons created on Googleslides)
Notes during training sessions, or annotating a journal article or book
Journal
Ideas
Meal plans
Shopping lists

I'm 46.

No, never

Thinking about it, I don't do any handwriting.
My shopping list is on my phone.
Even my signature for work is electronic- we write our signature on the tablet and this is saved as our signature on all correspondence.

Wet signatures - there's horrible term for you- is not needed anymore.

Im really pleased about it because my handwriting is appalling

Greetings cards/gift tags
Appointments on calendar
Notes when on the phone

I virtually never hand write anything. I broke my wrist about ten years ago and only twice needed to hand write something while it mended. Neither of those things I would need to do now. All my work is online. All my notes I keep online, even shopping lists (although most of it is I'm my head anyway). I love deleting each item and ending up with a blank note page. If I can't get something then it can stay on there as the first item in the next list. No chance of it falling into the hands of someone on MN and being analysed (do we still do that on MN?)

My children are all on laptops now too so all those years of pain and handwriting lessons are behind us. Maths is the only subject they don't type. Obviously for some handwriting is a pleasure which is great for them but for us it was just painful and frustrating. Typing has transformed our lives and career options.

I still hand write quite a bit although it's generally informal stuff rather than formal stuff
I find handwriting fixes stuff in my brain in a way typing doesn't
So shopping lists
My daily to do / work list / diary
Work notes (I have a notebook where I jot thoughts, phone calls, work stuff out everyday)
Working out calculations or build ups I write them out before typing them up
Birthday cards, thank you cards, thank you notes, a brief letter/card to my mum every week (she has Alzheimer's in a care home)

cloudyrain · 19/04/2022 13:18

I have a notepad on my desk, I WFH so it covers my whole life as needed but it is just for jotting down reminders when I am on the phone, planning my day or brainstorming, pretty much everything else is done on my devices. I have a poor memory so have to do this.

I hand write birthday cards, I still have post-it notes that I use from time to time (usually to stick a message for DH to read) and I draft my shopping list on a back of an envelope in the kitchen before coming back to my desk to do the meal plan and online shop.

In my working life if I have a meeting I may handwrite some notes but usually I have it all prepared on my laptop so there isn't much and it is all 'typed up' after.

My handwriting is getting worse as is my ability to write ordered notes not random things on the page.

FreezyFreezy · 19/04/2022 13:38

Yes. I'm a teacher so it's part of my job. In my normal, day-to-day life I handwrite appointments and other things in my planner as I'd forget if I typed it. I write shopping lists, reminders on a whiteboard in the kitchen, birthday cards, notes to my dc. I write in a diary almost every day.

It's not the same as handwriting but I am also learning calligraphy and enjoy the act of making marks on paper.
