When did people start going so OTT for Easter?!

I’ve seen absolutely WILD posts on social media (and MN!) this year. Hundreds of eggs, lavish lunches and dinners, extravagant gifts and people generally spending ridiculous sums of money on Easter tat. Has this always been a thing? I had a chocolate egg as a kid and maybe a roast. That was it, surely that is the norm? Confused

@inmyslippers

I like Easter, it's like Christmas without all the pressure. Thankfully not on social media to see all the one upmanship
I agree. And there’s nothing like a gloriously sunny springlike Easter Sunday in April, gives me a sense of joy and peace and rebirth though I’m not religious.

I’ve just seen a Post on Facebook where someone is giving away 5 large easter eggs because her 15 MONTH old was given too many?! wtf? And there was a post on here the other day from a Woman who was upset that her family don’t buy her kids any eggs for Easter told she was being silly and that no one buys for extended family well when you see posts like that it proves people do buy for their relatives children and can be upsetting that your family doesn’t care.

They've been a thing forever though. Sticks, usually painted white, in a vase/jar, with blown, dyed or coloured in eggs hung on them. My Grandma had wooden painted ones and patterned china eggs. They're not a new thing .

Grew up in the 60s. Used to get a lot of eggs from family & neighbours but that was it. No special lunch or trees or gifts. And they lasted for months, no scoffing them all on the same day. I have DS 25 & he used to get eggs or sometimes a pair of socks, or a book & £5 from some relatives.

I used to do an egg hunt for my DS when he was small and he would get a present as well as an egg from me. Then lunch. Now its still an egg and lunch.

Growing up I had chocolate eggs and lunch.

@hamstersarse

Most of the big celebrators don’t even believe in God / Jesus. It’s pretty odd and feels disingenuous when you don’t do the religious thing. What is the point?

I remember the days when we used to have egg decorating competitions at school. A boiled egg crafted into a spider or Mr Tickle, and the treacherous journey to school trying not to drop it.

That was pretty fun

Christians really need to learn that you can't shove your religious holiday on top of long standing seasonal celebrations (of midwinter in the case of Christmas and spring in the case of Easter) and then get you knickers in a twist when people continue to celebrate the season without giving a fuck about your religion.

Easter can simply be about celebrating the end of winter and the coming of sumner, new growth - flowers and eggs and chicks and baby bunnies, and enjoying a nice meal and chocolate with your family.

Have you never heard of an Easter tree/easter garden? They are not a new invention…

Exactly

To be honest, I remember much more from my childhood than we do now. We got big Easter baskets full of eggs and sweets, there would be Easter parades in town and family days out. The run up was full of crafts and baking in school and at home. What we do now is much more chilled and low key

Blame apple 2009 ? and the birth of the iPhone
I don't like apple, but even I'm curious as to how you can blame them for this. Grin
Shmithecat2 · 19/04/2022 12:21

Since it became a pissing competition on social media.

Felix0204 · 19/04/2022 12:27

It's infuriating , DD said we had no Easter spirit compared to YouTubers. Seasonal events have become much more stressful the elf on the shelf , Christmas boxes and now they want massive celebrations for Easter. It's becoming harder and harder to keep up with it all, maintain a full time career looking after the house and do all these events.

These are not new, though they were not that common in the UK until recently. I use my grandmother's ornaments.
Legoisthebest · 19/04/2022 14:12

Vicky Easter trees are a German tradition that have been around for centuries in one form or another.
I learned about them a few years back through a friend who is very religious and the church she attends shares their building with a German church so that's apparently where she got the idea.
I simply thought they are pretty so I started doing one (I am not particularly religious - Easter is bunnies, chicks and chocolate to me).
She definitely didn't do it for social media because she is completely not into social media and doesn't go anywhere near it.

I don't think it's Christians who get their knickers in a twist about this tbh. The, 'I bet they didn't go to church!' brigade tend to be non-Christians who don't like how popular the celebration is, IME.

Why is it that parents can't do anything without being labelled as "doing it for social media"/instagram mum🙄 some people genuinely enjoy buying their kids and seeing the excitement on their faces....
