And if you disagree, how do you do it?
How do you satisfy your appetite and what weight loss is reasonable monthly, if three stone overweight

I don’t hate my body, I LOVE my body, which is why I don’t fill it full of low fat processed foods, but focus mostly on healthy natural foods and exercise daily. Learning to appreciate my body and respect myself and the amazing things it can do was a big motivation for me to get fit and healthy.

EdenFlower · 17/04/2022 20:25

If you're restricting to 1500 calories in order to lose weight then it won't be long term will it? As soon as you reach your target weight you will be able to eat more to maintain that weight.

bellaiceberg · 17/04/2022 20:25

I eat less than that but not by a lot. I am slightly sedentary job-wise but do a lot of hill walking. I am quite a small build and average height. Not sure why though, but i have never been on a diet. My mum was similar.

One thing that would sometimes take me over that amount is special occasions (easter egg!) or booze Grin.
Also have you worked out your TDEE?

tdeecalculator.net/
These calculators are so ridiculous. They don't factor in muscle mass, metabolic rate. We all know that 2 people with the same stats will. E wildly different in what they can eat.

Coldilox · 17/04/2022 20:25

I lost three stone eating 1700 calories a day, I started off at 12.5 stone. If you are heavier you probably need more.

It’s doable, if took me 6 months to lose the three stone. Had to up activity levels too - aimed for 15000 steps a day. I followed Team RH , but wouldn’t recommend joining as he is vile. Preece Nutrition is a good group, find on Facebook.

I was then able to maintain my weight on 2100-2200 calories a day, maintained for ages, but fell into bad habits in lockdown and put on weight. Now want to lose a stone, which is entirely manageable.

Drink lots of water.

I never felt hungry on 1700 calories, I just wasn’t able to really indulge on it. Always had enough for a little bit of dark chocolate in the evening. Protein is your friend. I aimed for 50%carbs, 25%fat and 25%protein out of my calories, although was flexible on carbs and fat, as long as 25% of my calories came from protein.

northernruth · 17/04/2022 20:26

@bellac11 yes I'm aware of that, it doesn't require DAILY calorie counting so personally I find it preferable

OperationMincemeat · 17/04/2022 20:26

@nahnothanks

This whole thread is just such a sad read.

Can you imagine how much time women waste throughout their lives fretting over this stuff? About how many calories are in a bloody Kit Kat?

If you want to improve your relationship with your body, step back from the diet industry. The vast majority of people who lose weight will put it back on again, and then some.

Your life’s purpose is not weight loss. There are a lot of people making a lot of money from you hating your bodies.

Do you think so? Here's what I eat in a day:

Oatmeal with berries for breakfast
Usually omelette with spinach or mushrooms for lunch or a quick stirfry of whatever veg is lurking in the fridge
Mid afternoon snack of an apple, pear or satsuma. Occ a square of chocolate.
Dinner: usually a hot Asian meal bcos I am Asian: some variation of veg, rice, chicken, fish or lentils.
Two coffees a day.

I think all this comes in under 1500 though I could not swear to it. Don't feel as if I am starving myself. I am 5"7 and a size 12.

northernruth · 17/04/2022 20:28

@Goldijobsandthe3bears

Fasting has a lot more health benefits than simple less it’s also not starving yourself.
Yes I've a friend who does a 72 hour fast once every couple of months as she's a cancer survivor and wants the health benefits
Scottishflower65 · 17/04/2022 20:28

As per PPs, lift weights regularly and you can eat a lot more. Full fat everything, no sugar or processed foods, plenty of protein. Not a diet but a complete change for ever. I still drink alcohol but clear spirits and no carb tonic water as the mixer. I honestly don’t feel hunger anymore except if I forget my protein shake before the gym. My weight stays nicely within normal BMI with no effort whatsoever.

Hm2020 · 17/04/2022 20:30

I eat between 1200-1400 calories at the minute I’ve lost 7lbs in 2 weeks I also do over 15000 steps a day.
Banana for breakfast
A quick lunch sometimes is 4 vegetable fingers
A few pieces of fruit through out the day tangerine and apples usually
Dinner is grilled chicken breast steam bag of rice and vegetables
I also drink instant coffee with almond milk.
I’ve previously lost 3 stone in 3 months doing similar

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 17/04/2022 20:30

I’m on around 1200 per day. I’m over 50, exercise regularly but still putting on weight. GP suggested cutting to 1000 per day but I haven’t managed that yet. If I ate more than 1200 regularly I’d be huge, I’m currently a stone and a half over what my GP thinks I should be and a stone over where I am happy.

Ponderingwindow · 17/04/2022 20:30

I never need to eat that low to lose weight. In fact if I try to eat that low, I feel quite Ill because it’s just too big of a deficit to calories used. I find it’s better to track activity vs calories and just aim for a target deficit.

MrsAvocet · 17/04/2022 20:32

Depends how big you are and how active you are I guess, but I would gain weight on 1500 as I'm very small and currently cant do much exercise due to an injury. Fingers crossed I will be more mobile soon though and then I'll need to eat a bit more. I'll maintain my weight. on about 1300 at present. As long as I don't eat out I can do that without too much difficulty. I don't drink alcohol which I think probably helps and I have to be very strict with snacks, but I don't find it particularly difficult to make a satisfying main meal with 500kcal or less. Lean protein and lots of veg plus a a fairly small amount of carbs does the job.

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 17/04/2022 20:32

I have been eating 1500 cals a day; 3 meals of 500 calories and no snacks. You do need to cut out treats obviously and alcohol too (I don’t really drink anyway). Yesterday I had for breakfast a big bowl of granola with kiwi yogurt and oat milk, plus 2 coffees with milk. For lunch I had a avocado and hummus wrap and salad. For dinner I had king prawn and red pepper risotto. I think those are all really filling normal meals! It’s the constant need to snack that causes weight gain IMO

yogacurl · 17/04/2022 20:33

"Your life’s purpose is not weight loss. There are a lot of people making a lot of money from you hating your bodies."

I don't get this attitude, as though weight loss is about hating yourself, that's mad. Eating healthily and being a low weight has totally transformed my life. This is now an act of love and respect to the body I live in: I was much more hateful to it in the old days when I shovelled any old shit in.

yogacurl · 17/04/2022 20:34

I also think if you cut out processed food, 1500 calories is suddenly a LOT of fruit and veg. It's much more filling than a higher calorie processed diet will be.

Libertybear80 · 17/04/2022 20:34

I eat about that currently and have been doing since mid Feb. Consequently I've lost half a stone which I needed to. You just have to avoid beige food, eat colourful food and you will be fine.

nosyupnorth · 17/04/2022 20:35

Depends how tall you are/your build.

I'm by no means a skinny salad eater, but that would be about right for me given my overall size and sedentary lifestyle. If I were 5"8 and sporty or in a very physical job it would be insufficient and unsustainable.

Branleuse · 17/04/2022 20:36

I think 1500 is not too bad. When ive done MFP it has always tried to get me to do 1200 a day, and I couldnt stick to it. Too hard. I think 1500 would be borderline ok, but id need a day off or weekends off as eating is one of lifes true pleasures

Superbabe64 · 17/04/2022 20:36

@nahnothanks
I have never followed a 'diet' in my life. I eat healthy and exercise.
Some of us put on weight very easily. I do and so do my sisters.
I do not and never wanted to be fat, I just look after myself and it is certainly paying off. I am 57 and feeling fit and fabulous, just having had a big family Easter lunch and sitting here drinking a few wines, but tomorrow I will be going to the gym to spin those excess calories off...that's how it works for me. I have no interest in the diet industry nor have I ever hated my body.
It is not rocket science...if you do not want to be fat...watch them calories. If you're eating to excess and you do not want to put on weight...you need to burn them.

EmmaH2022 · 17/04/2022 20:36

I hear you OP. I think I’m just going to stay fat. Life is too long and tediously for calorie counting.

CooooCoooo · 17/04/2022 20:37

At a private clinic in Wiltshire. I can't remember what the test was called but I stood on a machine for around 30 seconds and it then printed out some results. As well as my metabolic rate, it told me my body fat %, muscle %, how much fat was in each limb erm lots more but this is just off the top of my head. It was really good and seeing exactly how much fat was in my body was the kick up the arse I needed.

yogacurl · 17/04/2022 20:38

@EmmaH2022

But getting healthier and thinner is an amazing feeling. It's not about what you look like to other people. It's worth living more healthily if you can.
Rosewaterblossom · 17/04/2022 20:40

Weight is such a big myth. You should be measuring yourself, not weighing yourself. I've gained weight, but it's 4 kilos of muscle since the autumn from training and I'm slimmer now then I was before.

gamerchick · 17/04/2022 20:41

If you want to be full then eat more protien. It's not that hard. 1500 calories isn't impossible.
