To want to go on an adventure with my baby

anyoneanyoneanyone · 16/04/2022 19:18

Ok I'm a single mum to a 6 month baby and 43. No ties, 6 months of maternity left.

I want a challenge like a coast to coast, anything I can do with her. I won't ever get this time again.

Help me, what can I do?

Sign up to the youth hostel association. Get some family rooms or glamping pods and go exploring. You will meet loads of people via the YHA.

Pember · 16/04/2022 19:28

This or such an amazing idea!

You could try Workaway. Hosts looking for helping hands on all sorts of projects all around the world. Many accept children and families. You usually work for a few weeks or months in exchange for food and board.

I used this lots as a languages student to find low cost places to improve my languages abroad. I hope it still exists!

AmericanStickInsect · 16/04/2022 19:44

Do Coast to Coast! Lovely thing to do with a 6 month old. When I did it there was a company called packhorse that would take your bag and drop it at the location you were headed to so you would.only have to carry baby and day bag, not whole pack. Go for it!!

LynnDaBogTrotter · 16/04/2022 19:46

What about a campervan adventure

Genuine question- who would look after the baby while OP works?

A complete stranger? I would not be up for this with my 6 month old - no way.

Holiday sound like a better idea if you can afford it.

MartinMartinMarti · 16/04/2022 19:51

This sounds awesome, and they’re the perfect age. I’d travel down Italy by train.

Ozanj · 16/04/2022 19:52

I was going to do Japan with DS at 6 mths but covid ruined my plans. Consider it if it’s an option - while she’s ‘portable’ it will be so great. And Japanese ‘baby food’ is available almost everywhere - restaurants and even cafes take it seriously so it’s always freshly prepared even when the adult food isn’t lol.

PurBal · 16/04/2022 19:53

I don’t know the answer but yes do this

Mamabananananana · 16/04/2022 19:54

House or pet sitting!! Bet theyll be loads over bext few months!
Good luck and have fun!!

wakeupandshakeup · 16/04/2022 19:58

I'd absolutely go for it, but stay in the UK. Point to point see where you end up! I recently took my two kids on an adventure in the UK (decided the night before) off we went over 300 miles the next day.. loved it so much we extended the holiday and had two stop overs on the route back. We see some great sights, kept our expenses low and made precious memories.

Whetheryouthinkyoucan · 16/04/2022 19:59

You could certainly try house sitting! Pet sitting with dogs might be tricky, you’d have to trust the dogs were good with babies which isn’t a given.

What’s the budget for this?! That massively impacts the options.

gogohm · 16/04/2022 20:00

Go travelling wherever you can afford, they are very flexible at that age. Money no object I would go to South America

Alwayspaintyournails · 16/04/2022 20:00

What a wonderful idea. What sort of budget are you looking at?

MsBakeOff · 16/04/2022 20:00

I love it. C2C totally doable especially if you YH or the like and don't try to do much much per day, just in case you can't/it takes the fun out of it.

There are even services that bus your bags from accom to accom - or at least there were pre-covid.

Take lots of pics to show her in a few years time

Mamabananananana · 16/04/2022 20:03

@Whetheryouthinkyoucan
Plenty of cats need sitting too Wink

D0lphine · 16/04/2022 20:07

Ok what's the budget?

You can do something on any budget, but budget considerations are crucial in deciding what's possible!!

Gagaandgag · 16/04/2022 20:10

Sounds a brilliant idea!!! Enjoy! I’m
Sure you’ll make memories to last a lifetime

D0lphine · 16/04/2022 20:14

Also this is a flipping awesome idea!!

Whetheryouthinkyoucan · 16/04/2022 21:48

Agreed @Mamabananananana hence why I said pet sitting with dogs might be tricky ;) rabbits, cats, lizards should be fine!

UnicornsAndRainbows23 · 16/04/2022 21:53

Do it and best of luck to you, amazing idea!

anyoneanyoneanyone · 17/04/2022 02:21

Wow thanks everyone, I really fancy coast to coast and the packhorse is a good tip. Can anyone point me to a good route.

Ideally need to stay in the UK

Hadrian's wall is a beautiful coast to coast

AmericanStickInsect · 17/04/2022 06:27

Look up Wainwright's Route. There are lots of guidebooks. When I did it the route was about ten days but some of the days were longer than others, you could extend it a bit to cover less ground in a day. So glad you've chosen it, you'll have so much fun

AmericanStickInsect · 17/04/2022 06:31

I think this is the guide I used (a long time ago!) Good starting point with alternative routes for different distances. Once you have your route then you can look at accommodation/pitches etc. Eek I'm excited for you!

Well I'm going to be busy today researching and planning. My budget isn't huge but I will camp and go before the weather gets cold. I want to have 2 weeks for a start. I will blog about it too!
