Lots of posts already around this subject today, but I’m interested in nutrition and always have been and I have read something about how the 2000 calories a day for women is massively over estimated,
so I’m just wondering if you have this amount? or more or less and whether you would class yourself as : over or /underweight
I personally seem to eat as many calories as my body requires a day - I actually don’t calorie count and don’t know what I have ,but I do eat what I feel like and stop before I get over full , this method seems to maintain my weight at exactly the same!
If I overindulge one day , I naturally seem to feel less hungry the next meal /or day!
I am probably underweight but about to gain massively if everything goes well, as I’m currently expecting!! And I do eat a lot of sugary snacks which I’d like to stop!

Average. Size 12. 10.5 stone. Eat about 1200-1400 calories a day. Sometimes less, sometimes more. I exercise a few times a week and otherwise only walk a few times a week. I'd say I have a fairly sedentary lifestyle. I easily gain weight eating 1800 regularly.

I eat when and what I like. Sometimes one massive meal, others I'll have breakfast, 11ses, lunch, chocolate, tea and then cereal. I agree with intuitive eating. I also stop eating as soon as it occurs to me rather than when I'm full.

I have to under eat around 900cals or exercise a lot more AND cut calories to lose weight.

OfstedOffred · 16/04/2022 14:01

Top end of size 12, approaching 11st. Have got this way eating too many calories, more than 1500 and I gain weight. I need to eat around 1000 a day to actually lose any, and that's with exercise. I'm 36 and could eat whatever I wanted pre kids/age 30 and stay size 10.

RockAndRollerskate · 16/04/2022 14:01

It’s such a spectrum and depends so heavily on hormone and activity levels.

I eat far more than my 110kg husband (same meals but I also snack… a lot) but am almost underweight due to a thyroid issue and BF.

WildOats5678 · 16/04/2022 14:14

To find out the correct amount of calories you need to use a TDEE calculator and go from there. No one should eat under their metabolic rate otherwise your body will go into survival mode. Most people need a minimum of 1200 to function. Some of the information and “advice” given on this forum about calories and weight loss is disturbingly wrong.

WayshrineNotFound · 16/04/2022 14:18

I eat inbetween 2000-2500 Kcal these days, and I'm a short woman with a normal BMI, and maintaining my weight. I'm just pretty active.

VladmirsPoutine · 16/04/2022 14:27

I don't think 2000 is a massive over-estimation. I can get to that number between breakfast and lunch and wouldn't consider what i'm eating unhealthy. I think we do have a warped idea of what healthy looks like because the time in my life i received the most compliments about what I looked like I was underweight with an eating disorder Confused

ClashCityRocker · 16/04/2022 14:27

I average around 2,000 I think, I'm 5'4 and weigh ten stone, sometimes slightly more, sometimes slightly less.

But I'm also pretty active, bike twelve miles five days a week, swim three times a week, play squash weekly and lift weights and circuit train a couple of times a week.

When my husband was terminally ill and I had to drop almost all physical activity I piled on the pounds very quickly, so I do think 2,000 is probably too much for the average-shorter woman who has a lower activity level.

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 16/04/2022 14:38

I'm 5ft and 7 stone. A size 2-4. I've managed to put a little bit of weight on and look so much healthier for it, but it's been a slog. Id say leaning towards underweight, but I look okay.

Like you, I don't really calorie count. I just go with what I want to eat and walk as much as I can (not ideal with a disability though, I drive much more than I'd like to.)

I've never taken much notice of calories/BMI.. we're all different so the standardised 2000 a day for women seems off to me.

elidelochanthefirst · 16/04/2022 14:59

I weigh 11st 4 but I'm 5ft 8, dress size I wear a 10 or 12. I think I look toned and in shape. I exercise and eat well. This gives me a healthy BMI.

2000 would be too much for me. I don't calorie count but I think I'm in the 1600-1800 region.

BuffyFanForever · 16/04/2022 15:01

Clearly everyone is different. Not much need to come on and share how you can eat whatever you want but are probably underweight is there? YABU for that. Do and eat what you want but don’t make comments and generalisations about what others eat

BHX3000 · 16/04/2022 15:06

I'm 5ft 9 and weigh around 11st, it varies a bit. I'm a size 12 for jeans, 10 for tops and dresses. I eat a lot more than 2000 calories. 2400 is usual but I often reach 2800-3000. However on a day-to-day basis, I don't calorie count at all. I do have a hormonal imbalance that makes me incredibly hungry. I'm moderately active, healthy BMI of 23.

HotDogKetchup · 16/04/2022 15:08

I’m petite and a size 8-10. I eat roughly probably 2000 calories most days but I’m really active too - so burn around 300-600 a day.

Thatswhyimacat · 16/04/2022 15:09

I walk for about 2 hours a day and do weights for about 40 minutes, 5 days a week and I would gain weight eating 2000 cals. Maintain on about 1600.

Anotherpassengerwantstogetoff · 16/04/2022 15:10

Tdee
tdeecalculator.net/

My maintenance calories are 1,690. I’m 5ft9 , size 10 and nearly 50.
As I started to get towards mid 40’s I put on weight. I calorie count because I don’t want to go back up in weight.

Xmassprout · 16/04/2022 15:12

I'm size 10 and a healthy weight, I normally average between 20000 calories per day. I'm on my feet pretty much all day, I have 2 dogs that get walked separately and I do exercise most days. At the moment I am very slowly losing weight, but I do exercise a lot

fallfallfall · 16/04/2022 15:12

Considering calorie counting info can be off by as much as 10% (and still be considered accurate) it’s hard to really know.
I’m a 65 yr old female and eat 12-1500 a day and maintain a slightly overweight weight.

amicissimma · 16/04/2022 15:18

I've been the same weight since the 1970s.

I've noticed that since the menopause my appetite has decreased.

According to the TDEE calculator I need 1130 calories just to be and 1200-1400 if I'm moderately active. I guess I must eat about that on average because I neither gain nor lose weight.

I thought BMI had been discredited as no more than one guide among many, and the important thing is to make sure your waist measurement is no more than half your height.

glowingcandle · 16/04/2022 15:18

I think it is very individual. Personally I would gain weight if I ate 2000 calories per day.

Honourofgrayskull · 16/04/2022 15:27

I would gain weight eating 2000 a day. I'm 10st 5'5 and fairly active (dog walking everyday and gym 3 times a week, I need about 1400 to stay the weight I am

wobbleinprogress · 16/04/2022 15:30

I eat 2000 + per day 5 ft 8 , 10.5 stone reasonably active . Over lockdown I ate 2500 -3000 a day as my daughter had an eating disorder and I was cooking to help her gain weight, and I did gain but slowly. Now I have stopped the massive puddings the weight is coming off. Everyone is different but I also think not all calories are equal, processed food put weight on.

HairyMuttttt · 16/04/2022 15:30

I’m quite active and would need to eat 1800 to plateau

lljkk · 16/04/2022 15:32

I would lose 2-3 lbs / month if I only had 2000 cal/day. Mid50s female, almost 5'8", about 37-29-38

Concestor · 16/04/2022 15:34

I'm 5'6 10st 5 and maintain at around 1500 Calories, I have to eat 1000-1200 lo lose weight. I'm trying to get to 9st but I'm been stuck at this weight for ages.

merryhouse · 16/04/2022 15:53

@amicissimma thats'.... quite a lot of leeway!

I'm 166cm tall and my waist is around 75cm, currently managing to wear New Size 10 clothes (still a good two sizes away from Old Size 10).

I'm not sure a waist of 83cm would be particularly healthy for me.

Waist-hip ratio of less than 0.8 is the one I saw.

merryhouse · 16/04/2022 15:55

oh, and I think I average around 2000, though I've never worked it out properly for more than a day or two.
