Made to get up early in b&b

Arrived at B and B yesterday with 2 parking spaces at the back down a narrow side path. Parked temporarily blocking the 2 parked cars in while getting my suitcase out and told I could leave my car there (the on street parking is resident only) as the two cars were not going anywhere until Sunday.

Yesterday evening noticed I too had now been blocked in.

Woken up this morning at 8 by the owner of one of the cars I was blocking in asking me to get up and move my car. I threw some clothes on and went downstairs, however, the owner of the car blocking me in was nowhere to be found. The B and B proprietor even went into his room - which I thought was illegal. Proprietor then said that some guests are totally selfish and that wasn’t his fault! No idea, however, what blocker was told about when cars might want to move.

Person who knocked me up then decided he’d go into town to buy some baby supplies and would be back at 9-20. So I was stuck unable to go back to bed or even in the shower. The other blocker finally answered his phone was some way away going for a beach walk but agreed to return. When the blocker got back the b&b owner didn’t even tell me straight away, it was the owner of the second car I was blocking in (not moving til Sunday …) that came and found me as they wanted to get out. They had been told don’t park on the road you will get a ticket.

It’s like Fawlty Towers I’ve now been given an in street parking ticket - I’d have paid for one if it had been offered on the first place - but am thoroughly grumpy and over-tired.

Surely this rant is not unreasonable.

Who told you that the cars wouldn't be moving?

If it was neither of the owners then I think you were a bit daft to take their word for it.

It does sound a complete shambles though.

It’s the overbearing over friendly host that would send me into a speak of dread. I don’t want to hear your life story in the hallway or when I’m trying to drink my morning coffee.

This is what I’d fear more than parking 😨 having said that I only ever book nice hotels that have parking. Paying more is worth it to me for the peace and quiet, and not having to walk a mile dragging a bag with me once I’ve found somewhere to put my car.

Please don't leave a review and damage a small business.

Eh?
There is nothing wrong with a factual review highlighting the issues with parking. It's important for guests to know that.
If the listing advertises parking available I wouldn't expect this to involve jiggery pokery of blocking people in or being blocked in and therefore having to get other guests out of their beds at 8 am to move the car and all the faffing about this involves - and it could occur a few times over the weekend.
So I would be glad of a review which said parking is limited and that while the reviewer was there, there were issues due to double parking and having to move cars.
Then I'd pick somewhere else.....
If I was going to the place by public transport then it wouldn't be an issue. And perhaps a reviewer talking about the issues with parking might give a suggestion as to somewhere else to park if there is anywhere.

To answer questions I couldn’t go up to shower as I didn’t know when the ‘walker’ might be back. He said 10 mins and it had taken 20 mins already to ascertain he was out. Felt I’d be under pressure to come straight down again once he had reappeared.

I was quite annoyed with Mr Blocked in deciding he could nip into town until 9-20 no need to wake me up so early. I’d driven 230 miles yesterday and was knackered. The proprietor even knew I’d said I wouldn’t come down for breakfast when I checked in.

Appreciate poor choice of words re Mr Blockef lol but I can assure you he has no chance of knocking me up in any other sense. 😵‍💫😳🥴😇

An amusing (maybe) side note when the walker wouldn’t answer his door the proprietor said he was getting the key and going in. I was horrified, it was bad enough being woken from my sleep cant imagine what I would have done if someone had come in. When I protested he couldn’t do that, he said ‘yes, I can, he might be dead’!

@Cocomarine

“Person who knocked me up then decided he’d go into town to buy some baby supplies”

Well that’s ridiculous - he’s got 9 months after knocking you up before you need the nappies etc. Could have waited.

At least he's not shirking his responsibilities Grin
FairyCakeWings · 16/04/2022 18:52

Include in your review that the owner thinks he can let himself into peoples rooms when if feels like it.

@TeachesOfPeaches

Congratulations on your pregnancy

I think OP should feature it in her review.. I’m disabled and would need onsite parking to be able to access the B&B. I also can’t immediately drive on waking up, I need time to get moving and take my medication etc first, so it would be a huge issue to me to have someone knocking at 8am needing the car moved. So I’d want to know so I could book elsewhere.

YDBear · 17/04/2022 19:08

B&B should have said it had limited parking facilities.

sunlight81 · 17/04/2022 19:14

All parking rants must be accompanied by a diagram ... can u supply?!

Ifbutandmaybe · 17/04/2022 21:14

I don't know where you are, but went to Blackpool coupke years ago and the whole place seems to have double yellow lines and place we stayed hadn't parking at all, we were lucky to find somewhere nearby to park over weekend, I feel for lots of hotel owners who have little or no parking, especially if double yellows suddenly put outside, I would just leave review about the lack of parking as a warning , its annoying though that you were told the 2 cars would not be moving til the Sunday, I have learned from my experience in Blackpool always checkout parking , I think most towns and cities have issues with hotel parking not just UK either, had trouble in Paris too , unless of course you are happy to pay sometimes extortionate amounts to park in car parks

THEDEACON · 17/04/2022 21:17

I avoid BAndBs like the plague for this kind of reason !

Teenagehorrorbag · 18/04/2022 00:15

@Branleuse

god that sounds really annoying. To be out of pocket, inconvenienced and not allowed a lie in when youve paid out to stay somewhere is pretty shit. I wouldnt write a bad review but I do think the parking situation needs to be warned about. People shouldnt set up their home as a b&b business if there are no parking facilities unless that is clearly stated. I avoid B&Bs anyway as i prefer the anonymity and freedom of hotels
Agree totally with your last point. Went to Paignton a few years ago and DH being 'careful' knocked on the doors of a few B&Bs to enquire about prices if we went back - they were no cheaper than the hotels! Have noticed that a lot lately - you pay the same price for no privacy, no parking, no bar - why would you? Years ago a B&B was a cheap and cheerful option with a shared bathroom and breakfast at 8, £15 a room. Nowadays they charge the same as a hotel with none of the facilities, and you probably have the owners in the room above yours. No thanks!
DrDinosaur · 18/04/2022 09:06

Of course YANBU OP, I’d be blood furious to lose my lie-in like that.
You definitely should write a bad review, explaining how the parking problems affected your enjoyment of your break.
That would be a public service to anyone else considering booking there.
If business owners don’t want bad reviews, they need to give their customers a better experience.

Poodles23 · 18/04/2022 12:15

Sounds a right shambles, wouldn’t go there again and I agree 8am is too early especially if you’re on holiday.

zingally · 18/04/2022 14:01

Another reason why the £20 a night you save, by getting a B&B and not a hotel, just isn't worth it.

SwedishEdith · 19/04/2022 00:02

Ha ha @ "When I protested he couldn’t do that, he said ‘yes, I can, he might be dead’!"

Chooksnroses · 20/04/2022 17:51

Are you in Weymouth?

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 10/05/2022 12:30

Gazelda · 16/04/2022 10:14

@mnnewbie111 I think a fair review that points out the parking limitations is entirely reasonable. I'd be pissed off to arrive at a pre-booked b&b that I'd researched to find inadequate parking. I rely on reviews to help me decide accom to book.

I agree however that to leave an unfair, critical, or inaccurate review is unreasonable. In this instance I think it'd be reasonable to mention the limitations but also that the host offered a suitable solution.

I agree - it’s very helpful to know these things from reviews
