To want a kindle!!

I really would like a kindle but with so many different models I have no idea which one to get. I don't want to spend hundreds...something basic with a good battery life would be idealz
Can anyone recommend one? Thank you 😊

Get on ebay! Plenty of upgraders selling fully working older model kindles cheap because they've updated to the newest and fanciest one but if you just want it for reading with none of the fancy read-aloud stuff etc then an older model will do just fine and at the fraction of the cost.

Never paid more than £40 for a kindle and certainly wouldn't waste hundreds on having the newest and fanciest one. They're generally pretty hardwearing, the only reason I replaced mine at all was because I dropped it in the bath, but don't be a muppet and that's a non-issue.

I have a Voyage as well, I love it use it every day it's one of my most treasured possessions

I have a kindle touch. Love it

ToiletPoster2 · 17/04/2022 12:13

I'd recommend a paperwhite because it's what I have, but I think the only major difference from the basic model is that it's waterproof.
I do a lot of reading in the bath, so it makes sense for me but YMMV.
Also, you're not limited to one store using the Kindle. It seems that people don't realise it but you can transfer quite a few formats to the Kindle and for those you can't (.epub being the most common) they are pretty easy to convert to the Kindle format using calibre or something similar.
All Kindles come with a specific email address that you can use to send documents directly to them. I often get books away from Amazon and transfer them to my kindle using just my phone.

My OH bought me a paperwhite lockdown 2020

It honestly saved my mental well-being. I cannot put it down! It’s light. Quick and holds tonnes

@ChiefWiggumsBoy

Does no one know that there is a cheaper option than a Paperwhite? Confused

It’s still back lit but is half the price. Having tried them both in John Lewis I don’t think the paperwhite is worth the extra money if that is significant to you.

I had a Nook and gave it to a friend, which I really regret. It was a great interface and had buttons which kindles don’t.

I still love mine though. My most used item ever, use it every day.

The Paperwhite is 300ppi which for me would be worth paying the extra. I think the standard Kindle is only 167ppi. The text just looks so much smoother at 300ppi.

@Runliketheclappers

Can you really get used to it though? I worry I’d miss the feeling of having an actual book. Wish I could get over that.
I was the same. I tried reading on the iPad "Books" app ages ago and immediately bought a Kindle. I love it so much and can't imagine reading a paper book now.
ChiefWiggumsBoy · 17/04/2022 14:07

@Runliketheclappers the only thing I miss about a physical book is the cover art. I’m trying to minimalise my life and hardly own any ‘real’ books. I have over 2000 kindle books and am constantly downloading more.

I have Argos vouchers and want to upgrade my original kindle.

I can't work out the difference between a £70 one with an adjustable front light and a paperwhite which is more expensive.

HoppingPavlova · 17/04/2022 14:28

Another vote for Paperwhite. Mine is 4/5 years old, still going strong, battery fine. Love being able to read it anywhere from bright sunlight to a dark room without eye strain.

ouchmyfeet · 17/04/2022 14:39

I have a kobo and it's fab. Library books as noted by others but it's also waterproof so great for the bath. I have dropped it a couple of times and it's survived. Had it 5-6 years now so it was definitely worth the £75 I paid for it

I really don't think the difference in price is worth it. I'd go for the cheaper. I have the cheaper, and my friend has the Paperwhite. The only difference really is sharper text, but given I don't have the two to compare, it really makes no difference to me. It's no different to the very slight blur (literally, very slight) you get in a book.

Thank you Smile

SoupDragon · 19/04/2022 08:35

I've just upgraded my 2013 Paperwhite to a Signature Paperwhite because of all the Kindle threads recently and it's lovely. Bigger usable screen space for no real difference in actual size and very "clean" reading.

I use it every day so on a cost-per-use basis it is worth it.

My only issue is that I can't find a nice case for it - the one I've got is nasty, waxy plastic.

caringcarer · 19/04/2022 08:39

Definitely get paperwhite.

Ladybutterflyaway · 19/04/2022 08:44

I have a Likebook - it's E-Ink so the same effect as the paper white, no shiny screen or anything like that, but as well as Kindle books you can download from any store or the library.
