To want a kindle!!

guhjof · 15/04/2022 23:38

I really would like a kindle but with so many different models I have no idea which one to get. I don't want to spend hundreds...something basic with a good battery life would be idealz
Can anyone recommend one? Thank you 😊

I've had the same paperwhite for the last 6 years. Works great still!

Roselilly36 · 16/04/2022 07:35

I love my kindle it’s old , but it’s still going. Love it.

FleurDeLizz · 16/04/2022 07:37

I love my paperwhite it’s so easy to read on in all kinds of light

BuddhaAtSea · 16/04/2022 07:38

I’ve had a paperwhite for the last 4-5 years. Still absolutely fine. I love it.

OceanAtTheEnd · 16/04/2022 07:41

I love my Paperwhite too.

Nsws2015 · 16/04/2022 07:49

Paperwhite definitely, I initially got the fire and the glare on the screen when I tried to read outside was awful, so I switched to the paperwhite, and it's fab! Even my daughter has one too!

Photosymphysis · 16/04/2022 07:49

@HighLifeNotEver

Check if your library supports Kobo, free books :)
THIS! ⬆️

I had a kindle, but really got into free ebooks from the library in the first lockdown so bought myself a Kobo e-reader (the cheapest one they do, backlit with a nice light that goes really sim and really red).

It's awesome. I must've saved hundreds being able to read books for free.

That said, I then discovered kindle prime free ebooks so now DS uses the kindle.

FluffytheGoldfish · 16/04/2022 08:30

I had a Paperwhite and upgraded to an Oasis as I got annoyed having to touch the screen to change page as I prefer to press a button. Means I can control the Kindle with one hand and hold a mug in the other. Also easier to read in bed as I tend to curl up on my side.
I have used e-readers for years and still miss my red Sony.

wingardium8 · 16/04/2022 18:03

Had a Paperwhite which I loved but dropped it in the bath 😳

Replaced it with a refurbished one. Saved about £40 and you wouldn’t know it’s not brand new. (I’d just got a refurbished iPhone too - I’m a bit evangelical at the moment about the savings and environmental benefits of buying second hand!!)

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/04/2022 18:09

@takealettermsjones

Get the Paperwhite, 100%. Game changer!
I have had my Paperwhite for quite a few years now. It's great. I can read in bed while my husband is asleep without disturbing him and take dozens (hundreds) of books on holiday. It slips in a bag so is easy to read while waiting for appointments etc and you never lose your place.
Murdoch1949 · 16/04/2022 21:15

Defo the Paperwhite. I’ve just bought one for granddaughter, mine is probably 8 years old and not a Paperwhite, I was jealous! I absolutely love my Kindle, so many books, so easy to travel with. Amazon Prime even gives you free books to borrow. My son and I are in a Family Library, via Kindle, so we share our books, doesn’t have to be a family member, really useful.

LondonQueen · 16/04/2022 21:16

I have a paper white but it's still in the box never used! Someone recommended me some nice books to read on there?

Sewannoying · 16/04/2022 21:25

Love my Paperwhite. Had it 9 years and it’s still going strong (and I’m constantly using it). I put it on aeroplane mode when not downloading books and it lasts me at least a week, battery wise.

Justtrying · 16/04/2022 21:27

Love my paperwhite, had a 1st gen, which I loved, but needed a clip on torch to read at night. Tried a fire, technophobe Dh thought it was a great crimbo pressie, but I hated it, tried to make it work as a tablet for DD, and failed just not comparable to either an android tablet or ipad. I have the kindle app on my phone, but always take my actual kindle if away overnight as no blue light so doesn't interrupt sleep patterns. 0lys amazing battery life.

picklemewalnuts · 16/04/2022 21:31

Can you read in the dark on a paper white?
I use a cheap old fire for reading in the garden- turn the brightness right up, turn wifi off to preserve the battery.
Phone, kindle fire and iPad are great for reading at night in bed without turning a light on.

Cheap kindle fire is great for reading in the bath. I'm afraid of dropping my phone or iPad in the water!

Hankunamatata · 16/04/2022 21:35

Love my kindle. Charge lasts ages esp if put on aeroplane mode. Iv got the basic with no lights as trying to cut down on screen time. I use kindle unlimited quite a bit.

ToooOldForThis · 16/04/2022 21:38

I love my kindles
Have a paperwhite which is just for books, and a fire 10 which is really like a tablet, I read books, use audible, have Netflix and Disney and prime video on it, use it to go online etc

cameocat · 16/04/2022 21:41

I had an old paerwhite style which I unfortunately ran over! Dh kindly then gave me a kindle fire as a replacement which I really didn't like as much. It is more than a kindle; like a tablet as you can play games too but not a very good tablet. The kindle fire died and I've replaced with the new small paperwhite. When it arrived I was very disappointed as it was much smaller than my original but I know love it just as much. It can fit in even my small handbags and I just wouldn't be without it.

AnathemaPulsifer · 16/04/2022 21:42

I have the Paperwhite and love it but just wanted to point out that Amazon recently upgraded the basic kindle to have lights almost as good as my old Paperwhite so that should be fine for you:

www.amazon.co.uk/kindle-now-with-a-built-in-front-light%E2%80%94with-special-offers%E2%80%94black/dp/B07FQ4DJ7X/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=3VN4SDIXIZMW8&keywords=kindle&sprefix=kindle%2Caps%2C101&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1650141598&sr=8-1

Personally I prefer to pay an extra tenner not to have ads on my device.

victopai · 16/04/2022 21:56

Paperwhite for sure!

Voice0fReason · 16/04/2022 22:25

Paperwhite.
Read in ay light - bright sunshine to dark night.
Lightweight. Battery lasts weeks.

Lincslady53 · 16/04/2022 22:38

The cheapest kindle includes ads, but they are very unobtrusive, so don't spend more to avoid them. The cheaper ones are wifi only, dearer ones have mobile Internet connection. As they are used for books, we have never had a problem using wifi only. Even on holiday, it is not difficult to find a free wifi connection almost anywhere.
So buy the cheapest paperwhite. The paperwhite has a backlit screen, so if you read at night you don't disturb anyone else in the room. The none paperwhites do not have a backlit screen, but you can buy a case with a flip out booklight which works well, but not as good as the paperwhite.

Dogscanteatonions · 16/04/2022 22:38

The Kindle voyage was the best Kindle ever. Literally top drawer. Until they release a new version then get a paperwhite. Then upgrade.

Love my Voyage, and my Kindle Keyboard still works!
DoctorSnortles · 16/04/2022 22:53

I’ve had a Paperwhite for a very long time. It’s brilliant. I can read in the dark. Perfect.
