Boring Easter Sunday meal?

Wouldilietoyouisace · 15/04/2022 20:57

My parents are coming to stay with us for two weeks tomorrow. We’ve not had easter together in around four years. I want to make it nice so Dd is doing her Easter hunt in the garden with them (instead of friends as normal)
I’ve done an Easter themed table for the first time in my life 🤣and will make a meal on Easter Sunday for lunch
I’m doing ham with salad, new potatoes, coleslaw, bread rolls, dips and crudités, cheese & crackers etc, so it’s sort of picky bits…ish.
I’ve ordered Easter themed cupcakes from a bakery and will have mini eggs in bowls on the table and a chocolate bunny each.
Is this ok? Or a bit meh? I just didn’t want to do a big cooking thing, but now I’m thinking it’s a bit lacking in effort? I feel like I’ve put all the effort into making the table look nice and not the actual food
Also, I have hot cross buns, would you have these after the meal or should I warm them with butter for breakfast instead? (I did get croissants from the bakery for breakfast too)
I’ve no idea about hot cross buns as it’s the first time I’ve tried them (don’t like them) and never had these growing up 😅

Hot cross buns are a breakfast food, 100%.
Your lunch sounds lovely! Personally our family always have a big traditional Sunday roast with lamb, but I know some families aren’t bothered me by this (and admittedly it’s a lot of stress preparing and cooking it all). Your meal sounds lovely.

bloodywhitecat · 15/04/2022 21:02

I think it sounds lovely, I hope you have a lovely time together.

Ponoka7 · 15/04/2022 21:02

It depends on what your parents eat. Our Easters were like a mini Christmas. It could be anything from chocolate to a full cooked for breakfast. We had a roast, but with the weather being unusually warm it could be a BBQ. It would have been better to ask them and decide together.

Dustyroad63 · 15/04/2022 21:02

It sounds wonderful. Have a lovely time.

Reallyhadenough4 · 15/04/2022 21:05

Your meal sounds lovely. A lot of it you can prepare the day before so you will get more time with your family. I sound love a meal like that. I would buy a gammon joint and roast it the day before and use that as ham. Hot cross buns for me would either be fire breakfast or later in the afternoon if anyone was feeling hungry.

Greensleeves · 15/04/2022 21:07

We had hot cross buns for breakfast today and will be having them tomorrow and Sunday as well! They're wonderful for breakfast imo.

Your lunch sounds delicious. Definitely special enough. We're having roast lamb, but that's because it's my dad's favourite and he doesn't eat enough Grin. DS1 would much prefer your lunch to ours!

Have a lovely Easter and stop worrying.

Thatswhyimacat · 15/04/2022 21:08

That meal sounds yum, I really fancy something similar now! Must be this warm weather Smile

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/04/2022 21:11

I’d be very surprised if they’re the least bothered about the menu after all that time.

If you want to bolster it a bit, garlic bread is never amiss Grin

HundredMilesAnHour · 15/04/2022 21:12

I wouldn't be very impressed with the lunch to be honest. Given it's a Sunday, I'd be expecting a proper hot lunch and most likely a roast.

RiojaRose · 15/04/2022 21:13

Sounds delicious! I hope you have a lovely time.

I think I will be expected to roast many kilos of potatoes… the family won’t care what kind of meat I roast as long as there are potatoes and gravy Grin

gingerhills · 15/04/2022 21:14

It all sounds delicious and very festive.

I would definitely serve the buns at breakfast. Toasted or warmed with butter and jam or honey as an option. If you have too many croissants to serve them at breakfast they would be good afternoon tea but not as dessert after a big lunch.]

Can't fault the rest. It sounds very traditional and pretty.

Wouldilietoyouisace · 15/04/2022 21:19

My worry was the not really cooking much aspect, but, with getting Dd ready and the egg hunt and them first arriving etc I really didn’t want to be in the kitchen all day.
My aim was to do lamb but I’ve cooked it only once before
It’s also warm where we are tomorrow (around 24 I think) so we’re just moving into the salads for the first time.
Will def serve the hot cross buns for breakfast, I wasn’t sure if they could be a dessert 🤷🏻‍♀️But with the Easter cake and all the chocs I think it’s ok
Tbf they won’t be expecting anything as we usually get take away on their first night

As long as the ham is a cooked gammon that sounds fab. If slices of pre cooked supermarket ham, not great.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 15/04/2022 21:24

Your lunch sounds lovely. Could you also roast a chicken? And have a couscous salad and a tomato and feta salad? Leftovers will be lovely in sandwiches for tea later.

greenlynx · 15/04/2022 21:25

I would serve buns at breakfast.
The lunch lacks meat a bit for me. Could you roast chicken drumsticks or at least sausages ? Of course I could be wrong and your family might be ok, mine would complain about meat and potatoes/ bread ratio.
Great idea about getting everyone their own chocolate bunny!

Wouldilietoyouisace · 15/04/2022 21:31

@greenlynx I thought could be sweet with a Lindt bunny in everyone’s place setting

How about roast ham and Cauliflower cheese? You can make this well
in advance and freeze it. If you would like a sauce to go with the ham, I can recommend Cumberland sauce as easy to make and keep in a jar in the grand then heat up on the day! New pots sound lovely.

Wouldilietoyouisace · 15/04/2022 21:32

@ZenNudist Ahh hmm..you see this is why I ask and why I feel I’m falling short a bit. They’re not supermarket slices, however I’m not cooking the ham myself…very nice butcher is providing 😬

Grand ? fridge obvs.

ThinWomansBrain · 15/04/2022 21:34

sounds lovely - I'd come Grin
I know they're available in supermarkets all year round (and we've had packets on the table all week at work, and eggs), but traditionally, Hot Cross buns are for good Friday, and Easter Eggs on Sunday.

The cross on the bun symbolises the cross that Jesus was executed on (cheery!), makes you wonder why it's called Good Friday really.

Wouldilietoyouisace · 15/04/2022 21:34

@Blueberrycreampie That’s the thing, it’s just suddenly gone quite warm where we are, so I thought of the cold type lunch
I feel like I’ve had roasts with cauliflower cheese (admittedly I do love it) for months on end

Lemonlemon88 · 15/04/2022 21:35

That’s a perfect lunch. It will taste yummy and you won’t have to spend too much time in the kitchen. Hot cross buns are for breakfast I think!

Wouldilietoyouisace · 15/04/2022 21:37

@ThinWomansBrain Ohhh I see, see I’ve never had them, they were never part of our traditional Easters. We had some today though, so got that right, I have another pack of 6 though so thought could follow the Easter theme on Sunday too in that sense

Sounds lovely! It's a buffet/fork lunch which will be great. I love Easter. Not sure when to have hot cross buns - breakfast or with coffee? I don't really eat them. I'm wondering if they would go well with jam 🤔.

kennelmaid · 15/04/2022 21:42

Please don't call it boring. A pig who wanted to live died in pain and fear to provide you with the ham to serve your guests.
