Am I wrong in believing it’s called ‘gas and electricity’ and not ‘electric’?

There have been multiple threads discussing the cost of living crisis and every one states ‘gas and ELECTRIC’. I thought it would be ‘gas and ELECTRICITY’?

I genuinely am not being a grammar dick but I’m becoming confused as to whether I’ve been saying it incorrectly? Or is it one of those words where you can use either/or.

I say gas and electric.

GreenShadow · 15/04/2022 20:52

You are so right OP!

GreenShadow · 15/04/2022 20:53

Things are 'electric'.
Electricity is what gives power.

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 15/04/2022 20:55

It's American. They say electric bill.

That's what they say on movies and tv shows so or course, that's what people in the UK start saying too.

GreenShadow · 15/04/2022 20:56

Actually I wonder whether it's a regional thing in the UK too

Oysterbabe · 15/04/2022 20:58

Regional varience.

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 15/04/2022 20:58

Thought it was lekky ?!Grin

Anomalocaris · 15/04/2022 20:59

I've always said gas and electric.

I call the meter the electric meter.

When I had a coin slot meter and later pre-pay card and key meters, I'd say I was putting money on the electric.

It's just vernacular isn't it, doesn't matter if it's right or wrong 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think you could be right. I just logged on to my EDF account and it says electricity. I had no idea Shock everyone o know says electric.

IncompleteSenten · 15/04/2022 21:00

Yes but everyone knows what they mean so it doesn't matter.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 15/04/2022 21:03

See also 'invite' when people mean 'invitation'.

I'm not sure that's it. My Gran (who was born in 1901!) used to say electric. It's just easier to say in conversation than electricity.

Detroit here. A quick survey of the extended in-law family confirms that they all call it the electricity bill. I suspect it’s a regional variation in both the US and UK, rather than a blanket America vs UK thing.
IsadoraQuagmire · 15/04/2022 21:08

I always say electricity, I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "electric" bill or meter.

LampLighter414 · 15/04/2022 21:09

Gas and leccy

Meredusoleil · 15/04/2022 21:12

Always electricity for me.

But I just thought electric was a kind of abbreviation or lazy person's way of saying the full word 🤣

Can't stand the word leccy 😐

ENoeuf · 15/04/2022 21:12

Dual fuel here

Thatsajokeright · 15/04/2022 21:12

It's just a shortening, right?

Like Fridge and refrigerator.

I think I usually say Electric but will use Electricity on occasion.

BanjoKnickers · 15/04/2022 21:13

If you're calling one the electric bill then you should really be calling the other the gaseous bill ...

AchillesPoirot · 15/04/2022 21:14

I say electric

The electricity is the invisible power in the wires but the bill is the electric bill.

I have always said that.

woodhill · 15/04/2022 21:15

Or the leccy😀

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 15/04/2022 21:17

You're not wrong. But honestly, does it really matter?

sirfredfredgeorge · 15/04/2022 21:19

Hear enough people calling it "hydro", calling it electric is fine...

eggandonion · 15/04/2022 21:20

I get my bill from Electric Ireland. I call it the electricity bill.
I also get my gas bill from Electric Ireland.
