Am I wrong in believing it’s called ‘gas and electricity’ and not ‘electric’?

There have been multiple threads discussing the cost of living crisis and every one states ‘gas and ELECTRIC’. I thought it would be ‘gas and ELECTRICITY’?

I genuinely am not being a grammar dick but I’m becoming confused as to whether I’ve been saying it incorrectly? Or is it one of those words where you can use either/or.

OP posts:

for me its just a shorter way.
i hate the word leccy though. sounds so bad

LubaLuca · 15/04/2022 21:21

I don't think it really matters either way. I don't think I notice if someone talks about their gas and electric bill, it's just casual conversational shorthand.

HaveringWavering · 15/04/2022 21:23

YES YES YES YES YES!

And also agree with the poster who said it is “invitation” not invite.

Your are my people.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/04/2022 21:25

I have always said electric.

HaveringWavering · 15/04/2022 21:26

@eggandonion

I get my bill from Electric Ireland. I call it the electricity bill. I also get my gas bill from Electric Ireland.
Is that not because they have electrified Ireland by supplying power? So Ireland is now Electric? That use of the adjective works. But the the thing that is being bought by consumers has to be a noun and “electric” is an adjective not a noun.
MenaiMna · 15/04/2022 21:26

I think you'll find (pushing spectacles back up bridge of nose in Poindexter fashion) that you mean "natural gas" and "electricity", unless of course you are using liquefied petroleum gas in a portable device or kerosene heating oil in your oil tank.

HaveringWavering · 15/04/2022 21:27

@IncompleteSenten

Yes but everyone knows what they mean so it doesn't matter.
To you. It definitely matters to me.
FairyLightPups · 15/04/2022 21:28

You'd hate me OP, I call it leccy Grin

chesirecat99 · 15/04/2022 21:28

You're gramatically correct. Electric is an adjective, electricity is the noun. The bill isn't electric, as in powered by electricity, is it? It's a bill for electricity. Calling it the electric bill is a colloquialism. Electricity, electric, leccy, whatever, they are all fine.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/04/2022 21:29

I think you're being unnecessarily pedantic.

But then again, DP says in the arse end of the moor where he grew up they're only just past the point of calling it Witchcraft.

tiredanddangerous · 15/04/2022 21:30

You're right but I say electric...electricity is a bit of a mouthful!

SomethingOnce · 15/04/2022 21:30

We changed from electricity to electric and reduced our bill by 27%.

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/04/2022 21:30

@HaveringWavering

your my people

shouldn't that be you are my people Grin

Georgeskitchen · 15/04/2022 21:30

Who cares!! Everyone knows what ot means 🤣🤣

FlyingPandas · 15/04/2022 21:31

Yes, you're correct OP. It's one of those things that have evolved via a combination of regional colloquialisms and general slang.

Bit like when people write 'needs gone' on facebook pages, or say 'I borrowed him some money' (meaning they've lent money) and so on.

Gizacluethen · 15/04/2022 21:32

Electric or lekkie, South Yorkshire.

HaveringWavering · 15/04/2022 21:33

[quote vodkaredbullgirl]@HaveringWavering

If you look at my post properly it actually says “your are my people”, not “your my people”. It was a typo/autocorrect, just a stray “r” at the end of “you”. Sorry to disappoint you.

Horst · 15/04/2022 21:33

Does it matter either way it’s expensive Grin

Keefusandbetina · 15/04/2022 21:34

It’s horrible! I only see it on here though, no-one I know says it in real life. I judge it, same way I judge people who can’t understand the difference between you’re/your, or draws/drawers for example.

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/04/2022 21:35

excuses

Horst · 15/04/2022 21:36

Although my bill just says it’s for energy. Feel constantly drained though. How bizarre.

TheSnowyOwl · 15/04/2022 21:37

@eggandonion

I get mine from British Gas.

Call it electricity and electricity bill. To me, electrics would be the circuit board or power cables to appliances.

ThinWomansBrain · 15/04/2022 21:38

I'd usually say utilities Hmm
