AIBU - my neighbour's flower bed is my dog's toilet

SevenWaystoLeave · 14/04/2022 12:36

I routinely let my dog wander unsupervised around the neighbourhood and he's taken to going into my neighbour's garden, digging up their flower bed and taking a massive stinking dump there. It's his favourite spot to go. This has become a daily occurrence, but I can't stop him, he's an animal and needs his freedom, and I'm not going to clean up after him either because they can't technically prove it's my dog, and not someone else's free-roaming unsupervised dog.

...Yes this would be really fucking unreasonable wouldn't it and people would be quite rightly calling the authories on me and I'd get fined and a control order slapped on my dog. So why why why the ever living fuck is it considered okay and normal when cat owners do this?!? It's absolutely disgusting and I am so so sick of cleaning cat shit out my garden on a daily basis. AIBU?

@SevenWaystoLeave You have such an easy solution, leave your dog in the garden, it's pretty unlikely he'd catch a cat plus if he's already in there they probably wouldn't even go in there

SevenWaystoLeave · 14/04/2022 14:27

@pennywiselives

What do you suggest op? Should all cats be kept indoors just to protect your flower beds?

The entitlement of some people is crazy. There are many many things in life that annoy and inconvenience me but it's part of living in society. If you really hate cats and their owners so much why don't you move to the middle of nowhere where you can't be bothered by them? Then you'd get foxes shitting in your garden instead Grin

How people choose to control their own pets is their problem, not mine. Keeping it indoors is one option, but ultimately I don't care what they do as long as they do it. There is nothing at all entitled about expecting people to control their pets so their pet doesn't become my problem. It is entitled as fuck to think you get to make your pet my problem because you won't control it. You are an irresponsible pet owner and an anti-social neighbour.

Are you this rude and aggressive in real life, OP?

Thing is though op.. it is your problem. Until the law changes no one needs to do anything to control their cats.

chaosrabbitland · 14/04/2022 14:32

i must stop eating my cheese on toast and get out in the garden to supervise and control my tabby , just think right at this minute he could be doing anything , making the next door neighbours dog bark , crapping in her garden , killing half the wildlife , the list is endless

If you are…who’s keeping you under control? Very antisocial behaviour on here!
flaglady · 14/04/2022 14:32

Shall we ban foxes, birds, rabbits, badgers and hedgehogs while we're at it?

NancyDrooo · 14/04/2022 14:33

@Greensleeves

The whole fucking country is everyone's dog's toilet. You can't go for a walk without piles of festering dog crap.
Quite. Yes yes, it’s the owners fault, but you will still not ever find a cat shitting where people need to walk.

He's a greyhound cross, it's not at all unlikely he could catch a cat and kill it given the chance. As much as cat owners piss me off, I don't actually want to harm or kill their cats. But again, it seems to be my responsibility to look after their cat even when their cat comes onto my property, where my dog has every right to be and they don't. In addition to letting them cause a nuisance, cat owners routinely put their cats in harm's way by letting them free-roam. Then it's everyone else's fault if the cat gets hurt.

It's so bizarre - okay, so you love your cat so much you can't possibly understand that it annoys people, but surely at least you don't want to put it at risk of getting hurt? Free-roaming cats have a significantly lower life expectancy than cats kept indoors. You don't even have to confine it to the house 24/7, just control and supervise it when outside like every other type of pet owner does, and not only will it not cause a nuisance, it'll be safer too.

Seriously, nuisance issue aside, why are all you cat owners so keen for your cats to die unnecessarily.

I have 5 cats. They are all indoor cats. (Mainly because there is no ceilings outdoors and it freaks them out.

I have had out door cats and a dog before.

I have never ever found any cat poo ever in my garden.
And my last house where I lived for 20+ years was a very large garden and had many cats coming and going.

I can see it would be gross to put your hand into soil and come out with a lump shit but I am wondering if having cats scares (even in door cats) scares off other cats from shitting in your garden.
It is the only thing I can think of

I have heard that Tiger poo from zoos does scare them off coming into your garden.

NancyDrooo · 14/04/2022 14:36

@gingerscot

Yes!! All pets would wander if we let them! Keep them under your control. Anyone who lets a cat out - your neighbours hate you.
And anyone who lets their dog bark outside when others are enjoying their garden - your neighbours hate you.

@Lady089

These threads always remind me of how entitled humans are, state how inconvenient cats are for shitting, whilst forgetting how much they inconvenience millions of animals on a daily basis by polluting waters and the habitats of wildlife with their shit and causing the decimation of the planet. Seriously, wake up and stop painting yourselves as humans that do no wrong because we are far worse on a much larger scale. If only humans focused on the real issues, we wouldn’t be where we were now, so much outrage over something so small. Oh and if animals could talk I’m sure they’d let us know what a huge inconvenience we are to them.
totally agree with all this , we have literally razed some animals habits to the ground in some parts of the world , there are animals that once were prolific and only a handful now exist in the wild , the others are in zoos where by breeding programs are in place to ensure they dont die out altogether animals are never going to be as much an inconvience to us as we are to them
flaglady · 14/04/2022 14:37

This thread is not about what I can do to control other people's pets, it's about how fucking unreasonable it is that this has to be be my job and my money, because some dickhead people won't take any responsibility for their own pets which they choose to own then choose to let free-roam and cause an enormous fucking nuisance.

Do you also leave your doors unlocked because it's not your job to deter burglars? Would you leave a chainsaw laying around because it's not your job to make sure the neighbourhood children are safe? Do you refuse to brake when someone does something stupid on the road because it was their job to drive/ cross sensibly?Grin

Organictangerine · 14/04/2022 14:38

I think it should be illegal to own cats as pets. They should be phased out over 15 years or so (not being goady, just a controversial but genuine belief of mine)

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 14/04/2022 14:39

@OP I would prefer my cat to have a happy life roaming and get hit by a car than a miserable one confined to the house or garden.

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 14/04/2022 14:39

And no, it isn't "impossible" to control where they poo, you just won't take responsibility for it by actually controlling and supervising them

But it's impossible to stop your dog shitting in your neighbours garden? Hmm Yeah ok

Kennykenkencat · 14/04/2022 14:39

I do think sometimes that if you chase cats off and make it known that you hate them
they make it their business to annoy you and do their business purposely in your garden.
Welcome them with open arms and they will shit elsewhere

SevenWaystoLeave · 14/04/2022 14:39

It's not about being on a team, it's about being a responsible pet owner no matter what type of pet you own. Cat owners should not be exempt from that. There are no grass verges on the streets around mine, so yes cats do shit on the pavements. Then they walk into the road and get run over. And the cat owner weeps and wrings their hands and then goes out and buys another cat so that it can shit everywhere then get run over too. How on earth can anyone think that's in any way good or responsible pet ownership is beyond me.

Ridiculous 🤣 seen it all now
1forAll74 · 14/04/2022 14:41

Cats usually dig and bury their poo stuff in the soil. I have three cats, they all go outside when they want to. I feel sorry for cats that have to stay in the house all the time, as cats like to do outside stuff,like climbing up trees, and hunting and chasing mice , and sitting in the sun.

I have made a special place for my three cats to use as a toilet. Its a dug over strip of soil up the garden, next to my shed, and my cats always use it for poo purposes, I have never known them to go elsewhere. and it's been like this for about 12 years now. Next door has awful decking all over, and the other side has lots of gravel everywhere, so no use for cats.

But i still see a lot of dog poo in places in my village, on pavements and the village green etc, despite being notices all over, and bags and bins available to deposit the poo in..

KonTikki · 14/04/2022 14:42

I had cat faeces almost on a daily basis in my garden. I knew the cat responsible, and the owners.
Solution; after a good year of this I bagged the poo and would leave it on their driveway to dispose of.
Within a week they were using cat litter, and keeping it in at night.
I also have placed 2 cat scarers in my garden, available on Amazon £30 a pair.
For the last couple of months the problem has been completely resolved.

But cat owners ARE exempt from the same laws as owning a dog. My god. You're like a broken record.
gamerchick · 14/04/2022 14:42

@AryaStarkWolf

I do chase them off when I see them. Thing is, my dog is a sighthound, he has a high chase drive, he could actually kill a cat if he got hold of one, which I really don't want to happen - which is yet another reason I don't want other people's cats in my garden. So the result is I have to restrict and supervise my own dog's access to my own garden because of other people's cats coming onto my property (and of course if he did harm a cat I'd be the bad guy, because god forbid a cat owner ever take responsibility for the safety of their own pet).

You shouldn't, he probably wouldn't catch a cat anyway and it would deter them from coming into the garden

This. They learn OP.

I could believe it. One of mine comes home for a poo in the littertray. The other one poos in my flowerbed while looking me straight in the eye. I've long given up on telling her off.
