AIBU - my neighbour's flower bed is my dog's toilet

I routinely let my dog wander unsupervised around the neighbourhood and he's taken to going into my neighbour's garden, digging up their flower bed and taking a massive stinking dump there. It's his favourite spot to go. This has become a daily occurrence, but I can't stop him, he's an animal and needs his freedom, and I'm not going to clean up after him either because they can't technically prove it's my dog, and not someone else's free-roaming unsupervised dog.

...Yes this would be really fucking unreasonable wouldn't it and people would be quite rightly calling the authories on me and I'd get fined and a control order slapped on my dog. So why why why the ever living fuck is it considered okay and normal when cat owners do this?!? It's absolutely disgusting and I am so so sick of cleaning cat shit out my garden on a daily basis. AIBU?

@Heronwatcher

Look, sorry of course no one wants to be cleaning cat shit out of a flower bed but this is absolutely never going to change. You need to find a way to deal with it or let it go or it won’t be cat shit that kills you, it will be stress. People are never going to keep cats indoors or in a fenced in cage. Cats have been on the earth longer than us and have their place in society, the same as we do. It’s not about a contest between cats and dogs, just a balance living with neighbours and their pets. If this is the worst they do I think you need to live with it.
Um, domestic cats have not been on earth longer than us. We domesticated them.

As for "if this is the worst they do", when I was an immunocompromised chemo patient, the worst they could have done is killed me. Ok, that sounds dramatic, but it is true, and I should not have had to deal with the risk of other people letting their pets shit on my property on top of everything else at that time in my life.

I've not seen any person who's defending free-roaming cats address the issue of health risk their faeces can cause (apologies if someone has and i missed it). Fact is, if your cat wanders unsupervised you don't know where it is going, who is it causing a nuisance to, or who you might be putting at risk.
@AllThingsServeTheBeam you sound unhinged. Confused Going to the toilet is not the same as having a random cat shit all over your vegetables.
Why do I? I was just asking if you deal with your own shit? No you don't. They aren't disgusting for shitting. You're the one that sounds unhinged. Anyone getting wound up by a bit of cat poo is unhinged. Find something worthwhile to care about. Fuck me.

@SevenWaystoLeave

I'm not encouraging her to go in other gardens. We are rural and are surrounded by fields. I'd rather she went there but she won't.

I have these. They work. I hate cats

@7eleven

I don’t think anybody would deny that finding any kind of poo in your garden is gross. My husband adores our cats, but still grumbles about it.

Undoubtedly, your OP and subsequent posts have not gone in your favour, due to their aggressive, ‘I’m not listening’ style. Let’s hope somebody has suggested something you haven’t tried yet. Repeatedly shouting that people should ‘control their cats’ isn’t going to help.

I have listened. I've listened to people refuse to take any responsibility, laugh at me, tell the blatant lie that they can't possibly contain or control a 5kg animal, and not give a shit about the risk to my health or other people's health.

I have a cat and my cat goes out.

#sorrynotsorry

NancyDrooo · 14/04/2022 16:38

I’d still rather pick up one cat shit a day than listen to the incessant cacophony of yapping mutts on a sunny afternoon.

MajorCarolDanvers · 14/04/2022 16:42

I always find these cat ranting threads fascinating.

Duchess379 · 14/04/2022 16:43

I'm in the same position, neighbours cats like to poo in my front garden. It's very annoying but nothing you can do about it unfortunately 🐾

MortiaAdams · 14/04/2022 16:44

I had a cat that would come into my flower beds EVERYDAY while I was pregnant! I hated it!! Once I was on maternity leave, I laid in wait with the hosepipe. Just took two days and it never came back. Moved on to my neighbours flower beds. It's so frustrating when you choose not to have a pet and still have to clean up poo!!'

Yes there is a solution, as has repeatedly been suggested upthread - GLOVES when gardening.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/04/2022 16:47

I have 6 cats - you'd love me!

Honestly they tend to poo in my flower beds or on the lawn if the grass is long - we are surrounded by fields and they do bring home mice

If any of my neighbours asked me to clean up their poo I would happily do it - no problem

RiojaRose · 14/04/2022 16:52

Doesn’t everyone wear gloves while gardening? I’ve found far worse things in my garden than cat poo. I can just bag and bin cat poo. Not so easy to clear up broken beer bottles.

This. Previous neighbours had a Jack Russell and I used to fantasise about driving the bastard thing miles away and leaving it. It yapped, whined and howled continuously when they were out. They knew as well but didn't give a shit.
IsraelAndRoo · 14/04/2022 17:02

@switswooo that doesn't stop anaphylaxis - they pee on our furniture, they have been found wondering into our conservatory, they lounge in the hammock.

Gloves doesn't stop those things.

HELLITHURT · 14/04/2022 17:08

Oh goodness a thread moaning about cats, never seen one before 🥱!

I'm sure something really insightful will be posted soon... not!

Same old same old

NobleYeats1 · 14/04/2022 17:08

@AllThingsServeTheBeam something worthwhile like the risk of severe injury to my unborn child from toxoplasmosis? Biscuit

EdgyNeonAnt · 14/04/2022 17:16

It's not just on MN that people have an issue with cat owners (as ultimately it is the owners I guess). In my old neighbourhood, one of the neighbours had 4 cats and was detested by most of the neighbours. I don't think they realised, no-one had a go at them or anything (more just not taking to them or taking their parcels in, etc.), but the amount of poo was ridiculous (I should mention most of us saw their cats in the act numerous times). A few neighbours who had been there years with no problems said it was more or less suddenly everywhere after the cat owners moved in, they were not popular. 😁

NancyDrooo · 14/04/2022 17:19

We have a Labrador next door, gorgeous and daft but barks at literally anything. They let him out at 7am and it starts. Oddly, the son is much better at controlling his noise than the parents, so it’s doable. My cat shits in there, but I see it passive aggressive revenge.

There’s yappyfucker Bobby opposite, consistent high pitched excitable and/or snarly yelps whenever it’s out. Carries across the houses. It’s owner tries, pathetically, by yapping its name back every time. Pick the little fucker up and take it indoors, Barbara. (no names have been changed, so if you’re reading this, Babs…)

Massive handsome dog a few doors down. Doesn’t bark all day but my god when it does it’s like a bomb going off. Convinced it has a tannoy attached to its mouth.

All of the above (plus flies, cars, moving blades of grass) sets off the daft lab.

Noise pollution. Awful to live with. Not good for mental health. Inconsiderate. Irresponsible.
@yellowsuninthesky are you so insensitive when you didn't read my post that said I've nearly died (twice) because of our neighbours cat??

Cats can also be fatal to people - and actually their bites and scratches are far worse than dog bites for infection risk.
So? I've got a severe allergy to penicillin, tis what it is isn't it ... & still more dogs have been responsible for deaths than cats.
I hate dog shit all over the place & peoples horrible kids make noise & mess too.
I have an indoor cat who goes out on a lead & has a tether in the garden so she can't run off. She still comes in for the litter tray! I wish she'd just go in the garden.
Cat haters are just odd. Getting wound up over a little animal is just ridiculous!
There's so much more to get vexed about than cats. At least they keep the mice at bay. My next door neighbours sometimes borrow my cat overnight when the mice venture into the house from their shed. Grin

IsraelAndRoo · 14/04/2022 17:24

@catsoop do your neighbours allow their animals to deposit penicillin in your garden / home / property?

I guess they don't...

I wouldnt worry about it, the chances of it getting nuked or wiped out from the state of the earth is more likely

My point is loads of people have allergies. What about people who are allergic to bee stings then? Pollen?
Drama queen.

Costacoffeeplease · 14/04/2022 17:29

Is this still going? Jeez
It’s the same thing repeated every time, so tedious
