Holidaying abroad is not an option for most people - is it???

So looking for next year - looking at Ibiza in June for 10 days AI - costs for a half decent hotel, not in the middle of nowhere are coming up at nearly £4k!!

By next year I'll have 4 year old twins and haven't been on holiday outside of the UK yet. This isn't even in the school holidays. How on earth does anyone afford this?

For context yes there are cheaper options, but anyone wanting anything other than just a room with separate bathroom for 4 of us with half decent reviews the costs just spiral.

I think I'll have to stick with our annual 2 weeks in Wales for a few years longer

I've got 4 days in Northern Spain, flights and 4 star + breakfast, then flying on to Portugal, 5 star for 4 days + breakfast. Flights a combo of BA and easyJet. Flying out on 18th August.
So far with all the above paid for I'm at £1200 for 2 adults.

And that's me pushing the boat out because we didn't travel in 2021 or 2020.

It's way cheaper abroad if you do your research. All inclusive is always lots higher than "just" breakfast and dinner because of all the extras.

Holidays are an unachievable luxury for many.
Dh has enjoyed visiting many countries with work, we haven't had a family holiday for 9 years. Really pisses me off when he sends me pictures of him having fun, he won't even try to save for a family holiday. Our 7 year old twins will be having their 1st holiday with my parents for a week at the seaside, dh had the cheek to complain about me agreeing to let them go too.

PAFMO · 14/04/2022 14:03

Meant to say, last weekend 4 nights in North Devon cost about the same in a Premier Inn.

Workyticket · 14/04/2022 14:04

We're doing 3 weeks in a 5 star AI in Turkey in July this year for bang on £4k

Booked months ago- I k ow it's gone up now

Joystir59 · 14/04/2022 14:05

I was 21 the first time I went abroad, just for context. Take them on affordable adventures closer to home.

worriedatthistime · 14/04/2022 14:05

I don't think thats a bad price to be honest , flghts , hotel , food drink for 10 days as well as companies making a profit

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 14/04/2022 14:05

We have never taken our kids on holiday abroad and haven't even been in this country for a long time due to being skint. Even if it was "just" 2k that's still 2k we ain't got.

adriftabroad · 14/04/2022 14:06

June and Ibiza are popular with Spanish families. Summer holidays start mid June in Spain.

LuckySantangelo35 · 14/04/2022 14:06

@Cervinia

“ Honestly, it might sound grim but we did this for years and our kids had a ball. They had no comprehension of all inclusive or fancy hotels or luxurious destinations. They had guaranteed sun, sea, sand and a pool and wanted nothing more. ”

Your kids had a ball…but did you?

worriedatthistime · 14/04/2022 14:06

An no going abroad is not an option for many many people , going even on holiday is not an option for some as well

adriftabroad · 14/04/2022 14:07

Also, 10 days you are blocking 2 week slots. 2 weeks may well be the same price!

Libertybear80 · 14/04/2022 14:10

Just be thankful you're not married to a teacher. We've always paid peak prices!

uggmum · 14/04/2022 14:11

Ibiza is expensive. There are far cheaper holidays available.
Jet2 have some great deals for families at less than £3k and that is for school holidays.
Outside of that should be significantly cheaper.

We went to Greece all inclusive with a swim up pool for 10 days, 4 adults in 2 rooms for £3400 and this was main summer school holidays in 2020

DomesticatedZombie · 14/04/2022 14:13

Nobody should be flying unless it's really necessary. So, YANBU.

SynchroSwimmer · 14/04/2022 14:14

There are some good and cheaper options around at the moment,
Turkey, high end hotels, fabulous facilities, budget prices…you would get more, for less outlay, albeit off season - April/May

Similarly some of the Greek Islands - Jet 2, Lesvos, Aeolian Village in Skala Eressos as an example…

whumpthereitis · 14/04/2022 14:14

Look at Montenegro? The bay of Kotor. It’s on the Adriatic coast, and has a beautiful old town. It’s just below Croatia, but is a fraction of the price.

We get a ferry to France and camp 2 weeks in August, £700 for the ferry, probably similar for camping and food and the campsites are much nicer over there. £1500 max for a family of 4 and the weather is usually fab...and we can drive to where it is good if it isn't Grin

Robinni · 14/04/2022 14:17

Keep an eye to easyjet and book flights on the first day they are released (has saved us £500), book a self catered apartment, 1 bedroom + sofabed in living room - about a third cheaper than 2 bed apartment.

Consider investing with family - we have a time share scheme with fam each invested a few grand and we share the entitlement. We found for instance that outside of the scheme one of the places we go (about £700 for 2wks) is about 2.5k more for joe bloggs… that’s what we invested… so basically we have saved the cost on only one holiday.

Getoff · 14/04/2022 14:17

For many years I went on skiing holidays alone. I could do a week for £1200 to £1500 inclusive of food and lift-pass, going to a top French resort. First time I looked to take DD with me, which meant going during half-term instead of the weeks either side, I was looking at £4000, which was a shock. (Never went, partly due to covid.)

I had always thought skiing holidays were reputed to be relatively expensive, but when I looked at family summer holidays, staying in mass market hotels near a nice beach, they did not look any cheaper to me.

Tothepoint99 · 14/04/2022 14:17

@shabbalabba

Oh and that's for 2 adults and two kids in late June/July so in school holidays
Late June isn't school holidays is it.....?
NotThisWeekSatan · 14/04/2022 14:19

We have three DC. Being a family of 5 really pushes prices up in hotels as you usually need two rooms or a suite.

We’ve gone for apartments and apart hotels in the past - we’ve never gone AI but with spending money, we always spend £3-4k total, typically 3 star places too so nothing super-fancy.

To make you feel better, I have just been quoted £23k for the 5 of us to go to Barbados next year Shock

EatTheToast · 14/04/2022 14:20

Try 7 nights.

you should post this on all the "should we have a third child" threads Grin

Yes holiday foreign holidays will be put of budget for lots of families but that's how its always been. They won't start school and feel crxcluded because they can't chat about going skiing over Easter or their trip to the Med in the summer. You aren't somehow doing them a disservice or failing at life.

NotThisWeekSatan · 14/04/2022 14:23

@yellowsuninthesky I should!
