Holidaying abroad is not an option for most people - is it???

So looking for next year - looking at Ibiza in June for 10 days AI - costs for a half decent hotel, not in the middle of nowhere are coming up at nearly £4k!!

By next year I'll have 4 year old twins and haven't been on holiday outside of the UK yet. This isn't even in the school holidays. How on earth does anyone afford this?

For context yes there are cheaper options, but anyone wanting anything other than just a room with separate bathroom for 4 of us with half decent reviews the costs just spiral.

I think I'll have to stick with our annual 2 weeks in Wales for a few years longer

Oh and that's for 2 adults and two kids in late June/July so in school holidays

VestaTilley · 14/04/2022 11:43

It is doable - don’t do packages, don’t do AI.

Stay in a smaller, family run hotel or apartments with a pool, pay for half board or breakfast only, then eat out cheaply in the day.

AirBnB and budget airlines would save you about £3k.

We haven’t had a holiday at all in 4 years, because of having a DC, stat mat pay, nursery fees and sick leave. But it is doable - even in school holidays - for a lot less than £4K!

Growing up we holidayed in France and Germany a fair bit; taking the ferry and going to Eurocamp. If you have your own tent it’s even cheaper, you just need a bit of imagination.

teacherstyle · 14/04/2022 11:45

We holiday abroad every year and have never paid anything like £4k. We've been to Disneyland in the summer holidays for half of that! Not even for our honeymoon did we pay £4k. You have picked an expensive place to go, but there are nice places to go that are much cheaper. You can easily have a holiday abroad for half of that amount, just shop around a bit and book well in advance/last minute

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/04/2022 11:47

I go on a long haul and a short haul every year. I only have one child for that reason, I don't want to give up some luxuries!

XelaM · 14/04/2022 11:47

Sooo many cheap seaside options abroad - Rhodes, Mallorca, Turkey, Bulgaria, Portugal etc etc. We have been to all of the above and it has always been brilliant, all-inclusive and cheap. Ibiza is an expensive place and not one I would choose for a cheap holiday.

This year we are going to Italy (near Venice). It's not all inclusive (self-catering apartment as we are going with a number of people) but it's cheap and right by the beach.

Change your destination and it will often be much cheaper to go abroad than holiday in the UK.

Have you looked at Turkey? There’s a lot of cheap options in Marmaris, Antalya, Dalaman etc and you can find very cheap flights too

Fedupbuyer · 14/04/2022 11:52

Turkey?5 star hotels for 14 days comes up at £2.5k?

Quartz2208 · 14/04/2022 11:53

I think this is your searching rather than anything else - and a certain amount of 2022 and 2023 being more expensive due to the effects of lockdown!

We went to Florida for a week over half term for around that - so it is definitely doable. Just need to change your parameters. I often found going abroad cheaper than not.

Also you are looking before all airlines release the flights so it is going to be more expensive.

Mulhollandmagoo · 14/04/2022 11:53

I think June is stinging you, as lots of countries (including Scotland) start their summer holidays in June, so you will be hitting some school holiday times, try April/Early May?

Walkingthedog46 · 14/04/2022 11:53

It’s not just holidays abroad that cost a fortune. I’ve been looking to take my grandchildren to York for a week in the school holidays. A
2 bed flat, fairly central, in the school holidays - £1,700!! No thanks.

To be fair she's got twins Grin
babyjellyfish · 14/04/2022 11:57

Does it have to be Ibiza and all inclusive?

Ibiza is expensive and all inclusive is unlikely to be cost effective for a couple of four year olds.

There are plenty of holiday options which are cheaper than all inclusive in Ibiza and also not Wales. (Is Wales even that cheap, unless you are camping or self catering?)

£4,000 for 10 days is £100 per person per day. That's a lot of money considering that two of those people are small children who presumably won't be sleeping in a separate room, eating lavish three course meals or drinking alcohol. You'd be better off getting a self catering apartment somewhere and eating out most evenings (which is what my family used to do for our holidays abroad).

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/04/2022 11:57

@girlmom21 yeah, true. Not something you plan for!

hellswelshy · 14/04/2022 12:02

Ibiza is very expensive op. Even for self catering, it's pricey. Try the Algarve in early June, lovely temperatures and lots of great family friendly hotels.

QforCucumber · 14/04/2022 12:02

We've always gone May/June or Later September/Early October -

We have 22nd June booked, AI in Turkey for 2 adults and a 6 yr old and a 2 year old for £2800 for 10 nights. NO spending money really required and that's a suite with separate lounge and bedroom areas.

Gwenhwyfar · 14/04/2022 12:03

As a single person who doesn't drive, holidaying abroad is MUCH cheaper. This is because of the cost of flights compared to trains. I can see how camping in the UK might be cheaper for a family with a car.
I get fed up of people making out abroad is always more expensive.

Patented · 14/04/2022 12:03

Are four year olds being deprived of they haven't been abroad at such an old age? Really? What a world!

Gwenhwyfar · 14/04/2022 12:04

Who stays at 5 star hotels when price is a factor???

FixTheBone · 14/04/2022 12:04

Yabu.

I think anyone who considers that a yearly holiday abroad as being sustainable is being unreasonable.

Covid has changed the world, the rapidly incoming climate disaster will change it even more profoundly. the sooner people realise this the better.

Hotcuppatea · 14/04/2022 12:04

Just don't do all inclusive. It's much cheaper to do self catering when the kids are so small and don't eat much.

x2boys · 14/04/2022 12:06

Holidays are becoming out of reach full stop for many families, Haven wanted £1900 for a bog standard caravan for a weekend in August in Marton Mere ,that's without adding food ,spending money etc ,I don't know how they can justify tbh ,I paid more like £800 for a week before the pandemic

girlmom21 · 14/04/2022 12:06

Who stays at 5 star hotels when price is a factor???

That's the point isn't it. If you can get an AI 5* hotel for £2.5k you can get a holiday much cheaper than that.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 14/04/2022 12:06

2 weeks AI is never going to be cheap.

Our dc are 16 and 13 and we’ve into ever done 1 AI holiday in all those years - it took that long to save up for it!

Most of our holidays are camping or in a static caravan. We’ve used Tesco vouchers to help with the cost of that too,

NightmareSlashDelightful · 14/04/2022 12:07

June is about the most expensive time to go to Ibiza, because it's when all the clubs have their big opening events. So flights and hotels across the island even the ones away from the club areas are priced at an absolute premium.
