What things haven’t gone up in price?

Bearing in mind fuel prices should hit everything. What prices surprise you?
Flights are still cheap considering how much it costs to run a car. Still get flights for £30 to Europe.
Wine. My favourite hadn’t changed price at all. I still see the same wines wines available on the same offers.
Basic veg like potatoes (4 baking spuds 39p) carrots down to 19p but usually 40p, onions etc.

I can see it will go up eventually but interesting what hasn’t.

I'm a childminder and so far all my outgoings are rising yet I haven't increased my fees but I'm now looking into ways I can cut my costs but keep my fees the same without increasing them but it's becoming harder. For me the only cost that hadn't risen yet is my hairdresser but expecting that will increase soon.

RancidOldHag · 14/04/2022 10:42

It depends on when you start your comparision!

Spirits

Televisions etc and some white goods

Clothes and shoes - yes I know you can still pay loads if you want to, but there are loads of cheap retailers

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 14/04/2022 10:43

Maybe it’s been a fluke but the last 4 car parks I’ve been to have been safe or cheaper- maybe to encourage shoppers back to town?
Clothes haven’t gone up yet.

Weirdly, all my Mums groceries have gone up on her Sainsbury's shop, but Waitrose prices haven't on certain things.

So for example, Waitrose still offer great value and quality on their 3 for 10 meats. And they still go 3 for £7 one really good range of ready meals.

I've also found that my local corner shop has good deals on (£5 meal deal bundles) and still has sunflower oil in stock.

I think Aldi massive pack of loo roll is still £5.49. I'm.going later so will check. It's way better quality than other stuff too.

I can still get 2 litre bottles of water / sparkling water for 19p

The current Easter 19p veg is worth buying a few bags of if you have space to blanch and freeze.

Books at the charity shops still seem reasonable at about a quid. The clothes prices have gone stupid, though.

Microwave pouch rice is still reasonable. About 37p at Aldi. Even M&S do one for 65p.

Currently making a list of stuff to keep an eye on.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 14/04/2022 10:53

Just going back to the microwave pouch rice there for a moment. It makes more sense than ever as cooking rice on the hob (especially risotto!) is just going to cost too much in energy now.

desiringonlychild2022 · 14/04/2022 10:58

DH's Aberlour whisky- still on special offer on Waitrose

I haven't noticed my cosmetics going up in price but then again i buy different brands all the time.

TheDuchessOfMN · 14/04/2022 11:01

Neither my hairdresser nor beautician (for brows, at least) have

I feel for them because they will probably have no other choice, but by doing that, they’ll lose customers.

desiringonlychild2022 · 14/04/2022 11:02

@RancidOldHag we just paid £1000 for a washer dryer and £1100 for a new fridge! to be fair this is the first time we are replacing our white goods as we inherited our current white goods from the seller. But it seems like an awful lot to me.

We just wanted something with energy efficiency A rating.

poweredbyplants · 16/04/2022 09:03

A subscription to Discovery+ has actually gone down from £4.99 to £3.99 per month. 😅

Pinkishpurple · 16/04/2022 09:40

Tesco £10 meal deal. Main, side, dessert and drink (alcohol or soft) for two people. Must have clubcard or it's more.

Chely · 16/04/2022 09:43

Smart price range in Asda seem to have stayed pretty much the same prices.

LaMariposa · 16/04/2022 09:45

Giff gaff aren’t putting up their prices.

Ifailed · 16/04/2022 09:48

My water bill went down this year ( no meter, it's an estimate).

workingmomlife · 16/04/2022 10:06

My car insurance went down by 20% which was surprised about when it was renewed this month - same insurer

StScholastica · 16/04/2022 10:13

Fridges.
We just bought a huge chest freezer for under £300. And a 7foot tall Samsung state of the art fridge for £500 from Marks electrical. It's a midlands company but delivers nationally.
Even though they are both huge in the long term they will cost less to run than our old fridge freezer and I've got loads of space to store special offers now.

WhiteFire · 16/04/2022 10:21

My house insurance went down slightly. what I have noticed though is that prices haven't necessarily gone up but there is a lack of offers, so things I'd buy half price are always full price now.

Lochnessgiraffe · 16/04/2022 10:25

My water bill has gone down.

@RainbowZebraWarrior

Just going back to the microwave pouch rice there for a moment. It makes more sense than ever as cooking rice on the hob (especially risotto!) is just going to cost too much in energy now.
I’m not sure that makes that much economic sense…

A pouch of microwave basmati rice costs £0.50 (JS) and serves 2 - £0.25 per portion
A 1Kg back of uncooked basmati rice costs £1.75 and serves 13 - £0.14 a portion.

Energy wise, cooking two portions in the microwave takes 2 minutes, which at the current £0.30 Kwh capped rate is £0.01 assuming a 1000W microwave. So for 2 that’ll cost you £0.51

Using an electric hob it’ll take 15 minutes, and even if the hob is constantly on full power (it won’t be) a 2Kwh hob will use £0.15 of electricity to cook the rice. So for 2 that’ll cost you a maximum of £0.43. Gas is a quarter of the price of electricity, so that’ll probably cost you just £0.32 for 2 :)

Risotto will obviously take longer and cost more, but then while a microwave is ok for reheating risotto, its useless for actually making it in the first place - ideally from the MN never ending chicken of course ;)

Daenerys77 · 16/04/2022 10:42

My window cleaner's fee hasn't gone up in ten years.

Solmum1964 · 16/04/2022 13:12

Tesco Prosciutto was £1.70 last year. Been just over a £1 recently. Growers Harvest orange juice with bits was 69p but went up to 99p when they price matched with Aldi. Now gone back down to 69p!

SecretVictoria · 16/04/2022 13:20

My wage Grin

RainbowZebraWarrior · 17/04/2022 09:33

@Tryingtokeepgoing that's a very useful breakdown / analysis thank you. It's really made me think. I happen to have a few kilo bags of rice in my store cupboard and I've realised I've probably gotten used to the convenience now of the pouches (I'm disabled) However, I shall now be getting pitched pouches from Aldi as I've just checked and they are 35p. So that makes it a bit more comparable.

Now, I just need to track down the mythical MN everlasting chicken as that surely has to be the best money saver ever! Smile

RainbowZebraWarrior · 17/04/2022 09:39

Not sure where 'pitched' came from

CharSiu · 17/04/2022 10:03

If people want to cut back on power when cooking rice here is the method my Dad taught me. Rinse rice till the water runs clear. Bring to the boil for about 1 minute, put on a tight lid and leave for about 50 minutes on the hob. It makes really good rice, I have a rice cooker but still like to cook it like this sometimes as it reminds me of him.

Cheesechips · 17/04/2022 10:12

Ready meals. Bags of veg (parsnips, carrots). Clothes and shoes.
