When they're typed? I keep seeing it everywhere.

For example:

t'internet instead of just typing out 'the'
Zackly instead of exactly
Dat instead of that

Many more examples like this, and they're particularly used by a 'friend' I have on Facebook who is apparently a writer. Just why? It drives me absolutely crackers.

I expect your friend is me.

No, my friend would’ve written ‘I ‘spect your friend is me.’

@yellowsuninthesky the uni hate - me neither. I work at one and no one bats an eyelid at this abbreviation! I feel like I'd be saying university way too much otherwise...

HellyR · 13/04/2022 23:59

T'internet is a Peter Kay reference, not a general abbreviation. Lots of people in my family say it as a sort of joke.

milkyaqua · 14/04/2022 01:32

Half the Australian vernacular is made up of excellent abbreviations.
Ambo. Aggro. Arvo. Barbie. Mozzie. Bowlo. Smoko. Servo. Avo. Chrissie. The Rona. Devo.

I was going to say this. I use t'internet all the time irl.

@scoobiedoobiedoo

You had better not move to Australia then.
Totes !
ilovesooty · 14/04/2022 03:19

Prolly.

That irritates me.

PinkSyCo · 14/04/2022 03:30

Init bruv! (DB)

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 14/04/2022 03:37

Thankfully I don't know anyone who communicates like this, otherwise I'd be doing a stretch for murder, but there are some shortened forms of words that sent me into an apoplectic fit of rage for no good reason.

'delish'

Congratulations, you've just outed yourself as the sort of person I hope to never encounter in any capacity, anywhere, for the remainder of my life.

Too right.

I've just got an email reminder from Vic Roads about the rego for my car.

All abbreviations are theirs. :o

TigerLilyTail · 14/04/2022 04:41

It's probably just their thing and they think it's charming when actually it's quite annoying.

I have a friend who has quite a whimsical way of posting on FB. I think it's annoying, but I would never say anything to her.

LargeglassofRosePlease · 14/04/2022 06:42

Bruh

Das bad init

Crankley · 14/04/2022 07:14

I hate when people use 'invite' (which is a verb) instead of 'invitation' (a noun)

Bumpsadaisie · 14/04/2022 07:40

I especially hate "awks".

BigCheeseSandwich · 14/04/2022 10:02

In my local community group on FB far too many people write "wea" instead of "where". I can forgive a lot (even awks and totes) but not that.

JudgeJ · 14/04/2022 10:40

@Calandor

T'internet is surely just a little joke about/reference to their own accent? Colloquialisms can be fine
I think that Peter Kay was the first person I heard say t'internet and being from the same town it sounded perfectly reasonable to me.
StrawberrySanta · 14/04/2022 11:18

I see 'prolly' instead of probably a lot, it annoys me a bit

OctopusSay · 14/04/2022 11:21

What you mean is you don't like modern colloquialism in writing. You ably demonstrated in OP that you have no issue with long established abbreviations. Language evolves.

VestaTilley · 14/04/2022 11:54

YANBU, see also “wait” for waiting, and “meet” for meeting.

Who actually says ‘zackly’ out loud?

If you've never heard that , you've never been in a secondary school or a pub in the less refined parts of the South East.

No, I haven’t. I’m in the North. Never been more grateful to be.

Well don't worry, it will be coming. They've probably heard it on EastEnders or some owt.
