To get the rage with people shortening words?

When they're typed? I keep seeing it everywhere.

For example:

t'internet instead of just typing out 'the'
Zackly instead of exactly
Dat instead of that

Many more examples like this, and they're particularly used by a 'friend' I have on Facebook who is apparently a writer. Just why? It drives me absolutely crackers.

'Tis annoyin fo sho

atarevelwithsomerebels · 13/04/2022 18:41

Tlkin lyk dis on a fone seems very 2005
Thought it was to do with text messages being expensive to send and only a certain length allowed

LoveSpringDaffs · 13/04/2022 18:46

Bit ironic given your user name.

I dislike it too, but I'm rather fond of Zackly

Though, I think, zakly is fine!

BiscuitLover3678 · 13/04/2022 19:09

Those abbreviations are horrible op!

Tdetfrgrgf · 13/04/2022 20:58

Well this thread has helped me identify the source of the annoyance.

People say ‘they’re’, or ‘I’m’. No one says ‘dat’ or zackly (where I live anyway). Gr8, u, and so on don’t bother me, it’s the making up of words in some attempt to sound zany.

Fuck me it drives me up the wall.

Honestly it drives me fucking crackers.

My user name isn’t short for anything, it’s the result of dropping something on a keyboard and sticking with the result.

Lol totes bants innit.

SucculentChalice · 13/04/2022 21:11

Someone once asked me for my "email addy".

I didn't give them in it.

Or the non-native English speaker special version of written English with "wanna", "gonna", "I'm chill" and strange over-use of fuck as an adjective without them realising its swearing.

stuntbubbles · 13/04/2022 21:14

Oh, I love “email addy”. And “deets”. But I’m always here for a pointless abreev.

Dickopf · 13/04/2022 21:16

I agree with you, OP. "Convo" is very annoying. Though so is "uni". It's university, not "uni". There are others, too, but I can't think of them now (thank God).

Dickopf · 13/04/2022 21:16

"Fam" for "family".

QueenBodicea · 13/04/2022 21:20

I used to hate the use of "uni" but have kind of been brow beaten into it now, but only in text speak.

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 13/04/2022 21:25

One of my guilty pleasures is Bondi Rescue on Sky about the lifeguards on Bondi beach. One of the best things is their insistence on shortening every word possible no matter what the circumstance.

"Better get the ambo called for this one" being a regular favourite.

lolly07766 · 13/04/2022 21:29

@bellac11

Surely this is the worst forum to be complaining about these things on

I cant read half the posts here because of abbreviations and initials, I have no idea what people are talking about

😂
Tdetfrgrgf · 13/04/2022 22:01

None of the abbreviations anyone else on here has used has bothered so now I think maybe I just really dislike my Facebook friend.

You'd be amazed at how much I get annoyed by people saying "get the rage" when they mean mildly irritated .

Or are you French and you actually have rabies?

Calandor · 13/04/2022 22:14

T'internet is surely just a little joke about/reference to their own accent? Colloquialisms can be fine

Calandor · 13/04/2022 22:21

Take the L OP, it's peak but fam can't see your POV. Sheeeesh Ratio 😂

(Sorry couldn't resist. I find new slang a lot of fun).

Translation: Take the loss, original poster, but people can't see your point of view. [Expression of enthusiasm] this didn't go down well.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 13/04/2022 22:22

Spag bol and fucking "pots", when you don't mean receptacles for cooking. Gah.

"Better get the ambo called for this one" has a certain charm though Grin

Yes, I am French and have rabies. Good one.

Who knew the strength of feeling people had towards defending absolutely dreadful words like ‘zackly’. It annoys me so much to type it.

I don't get the MN hate for uni. It is a lot easier to type than "university".

And it's just an abbreviation, not a made-up or twee word like famalam.

However, I don't like rads for radiators, so am a bit hypocritical. But radiator is much easier to type than university.

yellowsuninthesky · 13/04/2022 22:27

Yuck to both of those. Especially addy. I thought deets was bad enough!

Agreed. Ambo is an improvement on the original. Said ‘friend’ would never use it.

@malmi

When they are typed
They're is an acceptable use of the English language. Dat and Zackly are not even words. Surely you can see the difference and understands what the op is saying.

Op I totally agree. My pet hates are totes adorbs, sainsbos. They give me the rage too
